Corrosion by sulfur compounds is a long-standing challenge in many engineering applications. Specifically, designing a coating that protects metals from both abiotic and biotic forms of sulfur corrosion remains an elusive goal. A previously proposed model for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of liquid sulfur dioxide, SO(2), has been reviewed. Thermodynamic, structural, and dynamical properties were calculated for a large range of thermodynamic states. Predicted (P,V,T) of simulated system agrees with an elaborated equation of state recently proposed for liquid SO(2). In this paper we present the first study of the VUV photoabsorption spectrum of condensed phase SO(2) recorded over the VUV region 120 to 320 nm (10.33 to 3.64 eV). Distinct spectral features were observed that can be used to distinguish between the formation of amorphous and crystalline ice structures. These signatures may then be used to probe the formation of different ice structures as a function of both deposition rate and substrate temperature.

A survey was made of residual free and combined or total sulfur dioxide in Thai noodles. Included were 11 samples of Keau-teo, 24 samples of Wun-sen and 9 samples of Sen-mee, which were dried noodles made of rice flour or mung bean flour. Sulfur dioxide was detected by the modified Rankin method. One sample of Keau-teo contained 136 ppm of SO2, whereas the SO2 contents of Wun-sen ranged from 0 - 157 ppm. Surface chemistry of porous carbon black was modified by oxidation either with hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid, and also by a thermal treatment with urea. The latter reduced the surface and introduced nitrogen groups to the carbon matrix. Sulfur was inserted into carbon pores using a steam-assisted sulfur insertion method.
