Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) is an important nitrate reduction pathway in lake sediments; however, little is known about the biotic factors driving the DNRA potential rates and contributions to the fate of nitrate. This study reports the first investigation of DNRA potential rates and contributions in lake sediments linked to DNRA community structures. Accurate metabolic flux analysis requires tracer delivery that preserves physiological metabolism. Current methods may distort metabolism through anesthesia, surgical stress, or complex procedures. BACKGROUND: Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are natural toxins produced by >6000 flowering plant species. Some PAs are hepatotoxic and genotoxic carcinogens. Reported cases of direct poisoning in humans have already been documented, but the highest risk of human exposure occurs through the consumption of crops contaminated with PA-producing weeds. The European Commission Regulation EU 2023/915 set maximum levels (MLs) for the sum of 35 PAs in tea, herbal teas, herbs, and spice seeds at levels ranging from 75 to 1000 µg/kg (dry matter basis).

Numerical models have been developed to elucidate air pollution caused by sulfate aerosols (SO42-). However, typical models generally underestimate SO42-, and oxidation processes have not been validated. Differences in the metabolic fate of antithyroid drugs influence the optimal frequency of administration and their therapeutic efficacy. (35)S propylthiouracil differed from the (35)S imidazoles (carbimazole and methimazole) in the more rapid absorption and excretion and the shorter biological half-life in the plasma of the former. Renal function may have a more important influence on the biological half-life of the drugs than thyroid status. Further work is required to determine the optimal frequency of administration for each compound.
