OBJECTIVE: To investigate the natural history and outcome of fetal talipes diagnosed by routine ultrasound scanning at 18-23 weeks' gestation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 103 228 pregnancies undergoing routine ultrasound scanning at 18-23 weeks' gestation. A computer search was made to identify all cases of fetal talipes and the records of these patients were examined to determine the incidence of other defects and pregnancy outcome.

The study was undertaken to establish the normal foot bimalleolar (FBM) angle in Indian infants and to correlate it with the severity of deformity and results of treatment in congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV). Preoperative angiography in 30 uncorrected clubfeet demonstrated abnormal vascular patterns in all but two limbs with hypoplasia or premature termination of the anterior tibial and medial plantar arteries in the remainder. The first degree relatives of 174 children with congenital isolated structural talipes equinovarus were examined by an orthopaedic surgeon. The affected rate of first degree relatives was 27 times higher than the birth prevalence of Hungarian newborns. The heritability in the parents and sibs was 0.82 +/- 0.15. The multifactorial threshold model was proved by the so-called GAMT programme on the basis of the identity of the h2 values in the different generations of first degree relatives. A relatively lower familial clustering was found in gypsies who had a higher prevalence.

This study looks at the changing incidence and aetiology of congenital talipes equinovarus due to the recent population changes within the area. Between 1st June 1992 and the 31st May 2006, 83 consecutive children (121 feet) born with fixed talipes equinovarus (TEV) were assessed and treated (an incidence of 1.6 per 1000 live births) in an observational longitudinal cohort study assessing associated factors. The objective was to introduce a flexible brace abduction brace in the Ponseti treatment of clubfeet. Eight patients undergoing Ponseti treatment for talipes equinovarus were assessed. Brace compliance and incidence of relapses were assessed. Patients first used rigid abduction braces, but because of brace noncompliance were switched to a new flexible brace.
