The aim of this study was to explore whether mandible-first sequencing increases the surgical accuracy in bimaxillary orthognathic surgery for patients with skeletal class II malocclusion concomitant with the unstable condyle-fossa relation. A retrospective evaluation of 19 patients who had undergone virtually planned double-splint orthognathic surgery with different operation sequences was performed: maxilla-first (n=9) or mandible-first (n=10) surgery. The centroid position, translational, and rotational differences in the maxilla were evaluated by comparing the virtual plans with actual res

INTRODUCTION: Open bite treatment represents one of the most challenging malocclusions because it has a multifactorial aetiology and in particular because its dental correction strongly depends on the possibility to manage the posterior intrusion with a reliable system controlling the vertical position of upper and lower molars. Clear Aligner system proved to be an efficient way to control the hyper divergent patients performing posterior intrusion and managing the counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. This technique has shown to be predictable for molar intrusion up to 1mm.
METHODS: Thi

INTRODUCTION: The role of obstructive tonsils in the sagittal dimension of the skeleton-dental abnormalities is widely discussed in the literature but remains controversial. Data on the probable relationship between obstructive tonsils and the presence of these abnormalities were subjective. The objective of this study was to quantify the relationship between the obstructive character of the tonsils and the sagittal cephalometric measurements.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in children aged between 6 to 12 years divided into 2 groups (A and B) according to the ob

INTRODUCTION: The possible effects of orthognathic surgery on signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) are still controversial. We prospectively investigated the association between the amount of advancement and rotation of the mandible during bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) and the development of TMD signs and symptoms.
METHODS: Class II patients (n = 127) received mandibular advancement with BSSO. We used factorial analysis of covariance to assess whether the magnitude (< or > or = 7 mm) and the direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) of the movement were associate

Tongue-lip adhesion can be effective in relieving tongue-based airway obstruction in the neonatal period. However, longitudinal evaluation of these patients demonstrates they require additional procedures for ultimate control of their airway, feeding, and orthognathic relationship. Charts of patients with Pierre Robin sequence who underwent unsuccessful nonoperative treatment and tongue-lip adhesion procedures by the senior author between 1989 to 1999 were reviewed. In particular, secondary interventions were quantified and qualified to determine if tongue-lip adhesion was a definitive treatme

This study was performed to identify cephalometric and facial features of patients with beta-thalassaemia major. A total of 54 thalassaemic subjects were examined for craniofacial deformities, including 37 patients (24 males and 13 females, aged 5-16 years) who had lateral cephalometric radiographs. The thalassaemic groups were compared with a normal control group matched for sex and dental age, using a t-test. All thalassaemic patients had a Class II skeletal base relationship. The average ANB angle was significantly larger than the controls in dental stages 2 and 3 (P < 0.05). Mandibular bas
