Anatomy of the ventricular septal defect in congenital heart defects: a random association?

BACKGROUND: A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is an integral part of most congenital heart defects (CHD). To determine the prevalence of VSD … . RESULTS: Ventricular septum was almost always intact in anomalies of pulmonary veins (4/73, 5%), Ebstein anomaly (3/21, 14%), and double-inlet right ventricle (DIRV, 1/10, 10%). There was always a VSD in tetralogy of Fallot and variants (TOF, 123 cases) and common arterial trunk (CAT, 55 cases), always of the outlet type. There was almost always a VSD in doubl …

Dilated superior vena cava in fetal echocardiographic three-vessel view: what lies ahead?

UNLABELLED: A 38-year-old woman, 37+3 weeker was incidentally detected to have fetal cardiomegaly during 36 weeks ultrasound and referred for fetal echocardiogram. Antenatal history and anomaly scan were normal. Fetal echocardiogram showed heart rate of 153/min, sinus rhythm, situs solitus, levocardia, dilated right atrium and ventricle with venoatrial, atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial concordances. All cardiac valves were normal; cardiac crux was intact with separate mitral and tricuspid annuli (figure 1A-C and online supplementary video 1). Mild tricuspid regurgitation with peak veloc

Current readings: long-term management of patients undergoing successful pediatric cardiac surgery.

As of 2000, more adults than children are alive with congenital heart disease. Each year, more of these adults with congenital heart disease undergo surgery. Adults with congenital heart disease require lifelong surveillance, follow-up imaging, and clinical decision making by appropriately trained and familiar physicians and extenders. Three common challenges facing adults with congenital heart disease are the neglected patient, weak programmatic infrastructure, and the planning and management of pregnancy in the adult with congenital heart disease. Many challenges must be overcome in order to

Factors associated with in utero demise of fetuses that have underlying cardiac pathologies.

Factors associated with in utero fetal demise (IUFD) of fetuses that have underlying cardiac pathologies are largely unknown. This case-control study aimed to define the prevalence of IUFD in fetuses with a diagnosis of cardiac pathologies and to identify prenatal predictors of IUFD. Between January 2004 and December 2010, 74 IUFD cases [4.6 %; 95 % confidence interval (CI) 3.7-5.8 %] were identified from 1,584 cases with a diagnosis of structural or functional cardiac lesions in the Hospital for Sick Children database. The cases were divided into right-sided (N = 28), left-sided (N = 23), gre

Strategies for tricuspid re-repair in Ebstein malformation using the cone technique.

BACKGROUND: Successful tricuspid repair for Ebstein malformation (EM) is challenging. Cone repair has recently emerged as the most anatomic repair technique. There are no data on tricuspid re-repair in EM. We reviewed our experience with tricuspid valve (TV) re-repair using a cone technique. METHODS: Between June 2007 and October 2012, 134 patients underwent cone repair. Prior TV repair was performed in 20 patients (10 female, 50%). Median age was 15 years (range, 4 to 68 years). Four patients (20%) had prior bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis (BDCPA). Preoperative heart failure was pres
