PURPOSE: Food avoidance is central to the treatment of environmental sensitivity (ES), a chronic, often debilitating, multisystem disorder characterized by adverse reactions to non-noxious levels of environmental substances. Because prolonged food avoidance could impact nutritional health, the purpose of this research was to assess adequacy and quality of diets consumed by women diagnosed with ES.
METHODS: Twelve women aged 37 to 50 recruited from the Nova Scotia Environmental Health Clinic completed a four-day food record during the spring and summer of 1998.
RESULTS: When adequacy of nutri

To identify barriers to following calcium recommendations among women with reduced bone mineral density (BMD), four focus group sessions were held with 30 postmenopausal women diagnosed with low BMD. Key concepts and themes were derived from transcripts. Participants were aware of the importance of calcium to their bone health, and were attempting to follow calcium intake recommendations. Several major themes associated with the ability to obtain adequate calcium were identified, including knowledge and confidence in actions, lifestyle and food preferences, and side effects and conflict with o

Individuals born with Trisomy 21 may be more susceptible to experiencing nutrition-related conditions and diseases throughout their lifespan. Seven studies conducted outside of Canada that investigated the impact of nutrition interventions in individuals of different ages (mostly children and youth) born with Trisomy 21 reported mixed results. Furthermore, Canadian clinical nutrition practice guidelines for the provision of care to individuals born with Trisomy 21 tend to be general in nature and may be based on a body of evidence that was not representative of this population. There is a need

Adults with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) may develop swallowing difficulties and elect to receive an enterostomy feeding tube for nutrition support. Blenderized tube feeding (BTF) appeals to those interested in a homemade enteral nutrition option, but there are concerns of feeding tube occlusion and limited research on this potential risk. Therefore, our purpose was to determine the frequency of, and risk factors for, feeding tube occlusions among adults with ALS or PLS who use BTF. For this retrospective study, the electronic medical records of tube-
