We studied 21 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease aged [mean (SD)] 63 (10) years, with a mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s of 40 (6)% and a peak oxygen uptake of 67 (11)% of predicted values. Patients trained for 6 weeks on a cycle ergometer at high work-rates (WR). Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to obtain the time-constant of the deoxygenation recovery signal (tauHbO(2)) during three constant WR exercise tests, one below and two above the lactic acidosis threshold (theta(L)). Glycolytic and oxidative enzymes and lactate concentrations were assessed in muscle biopsies.

Physical exercise is an effective intervention in controlling gestational plasma glucose (PG) and reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, evidence regarding the appropriate levels of physical exercise for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) women is still limited, especially in China. This study aims to explore the association between physical exercise time and the abnormal plasma glucose (APG) during third trimester, and to develop physical exercise instruction for GDM women with different characteristics. In this study, GDM was diagnosed by 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Duri

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affects multiple organ systems, particularly the lungs, where hypoxemia may occur. Musculoskeletal problems, fatigue, and exercise intolerance frequently occur. The effects of inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST) have not been adequately investigated in patients with post-COVID-19. This study aimed to investigate the effects of IMST on functional exercise capacity, muscle oxygenation and strength, fatigue, and dyspnea in patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome and pulmonary involvement. METHODS: A randomized controlled, triple-blinded study i

BACKGROUND: Despite reported physical and functional improvements with aerobic and sprint interval training (SIT) protocols in individuals with intellectual disability (ID), it is not known if these interventions' effectivity would promote improvements in cardiac autonomic modulation. This study aimed to investigate if a 6-month SIT or a continuous aerobic programme could enhance physical performance and cardiac autonomic modulation at rest, during physical activity (PA) and after it in older adults with an ID.
METHODS: This is a randomised control trial. Participants with ID (age: 50.58 ± 7.

BACKGROUND: Echocardiographic tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) to systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) ratio is a noninvasive surrogate for right ventricle (RV)-pulmonary arterial (PA) coupling. It has been related to outcome in patients with moderate to severe pulmonary hypertension (PH).
RESEARCH QUESTION: Is RV-PA coupling of prognostic relevance in patients with suspected PH, but only normal or mildly elevated mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP), and is it associated with impaired exercise capacity and exercise hemodynamics?

There is no proven therapy for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Research has shown beneficial responses to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) among HF patients. To date, there are no reports comparing those responses between patients with HFpEF and those with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The purpose of this study was to compare responses to CR in patients with HFpEF versus those with HFrEF. We included 78 consecutive patients (mean age 69 ± 15 years; 80% male) with HF in our CR unit who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation

Although low-calorie diets (LCD) improve glucose regulation, it is unclear if interval exercise (INT) is additive. We examined the impact of an LCD versus LCD + INT training on ß-cell function in relation to glucose tolerance in obese adults. Twenty-six adults (Age: 46 ± 12 year; BMI 38 ± 6 kg/m²) were randomized to 2-week of LCD (~1200 kcal/day) or energy-matched LCD + INT (60 min/day alternating 3 min at 90 and 50% HRpeak). A 2 h 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed. Insulin secretion rates (ISR) were determined by deconvolution modeling to assess glucose-stimulated insulin

Physical inactivity depresses glycemic control, an impairment that can be prevented with exercise. We investigated whether electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) with blood flow restriction (BFR) could similarly prevent the impairments in glycemic control associated with physical inactivity and whether this was effective for attenuating the loss of physical function after inactivity. Thirty-two participants underwent 1 week of step reduction (≤ 3000 steps/day) randomized to either no intervention (Control), twice daily EMS, or twice daily EMS with BFR (EMS + BFR). Oral glucose tolerance and tests
