Control of major livestock diseases in the tropics, such as theileriosis or trypanosomosis, is still largely based on the control of their vectors. Understanding the distribution of vectors, such as ticks and tsetse flies, is needed in order to improve the efficiency and economical viability of control operations. Technical improvements such as remote sensing and global information systems have allowed valuable improvements for the prediction of large-scale vector distribution (continental to national), but trying to make these predictions at the scale of a landscape is facing other challenges

The synthetic pyrethroid deltamethrin (DM) containing a trace of [(14)C]-DM was formulated with non-oxidised sterol and wax ester fractions (F1) of wool grease and as the commercial preparation 'Clout-S'. These were applied as a 'backline' strip to sheep immediately after shearing and the concentration of [(14)C]-DM at meridians adjacent to the application strip and at 1/4 and 3/4 of the dorsal-ventral distance was determined. The F1 formulation resulted in significantly greater lateral spread of DM with less remaining at the application site (66+/-8% of dose) 98 days after treatment compared

Severe outbreaks of malaria occurred in the coastal villages of the Candolim Primary Health Centre (PHC) of Goa, India, in 1993 and 1994. These outbreaks were associated with accelerated construction activity with an influx of migrant laborers. The weekly application of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (B.t.i.) strain 164 at 1 g/m2 and introduction of the indigenous larvivorous fish Aplocheilus blocki in major breeding habitats of Anopheles stephensi replaced ongoing DDT spraying and pyrethrum fogging in June 1994. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of B.t.i. and la

A quasi-sequential sampling plan for observing cattle was undertaken in the framework of Hypoderma bovis epidemiological surveillance. This plan enabled us to test whether or not the prevalence of Hypoderma bovis is within a threshold p0 chosen for an eradication scheme or for qualifying a zone. The sampling cost was reduced but the estimation precision remained acceptable. The sensitivity of monthly controls with respect to the reference period (April, May, June, July) was studied from data observed over 6 consecutive years in Côtes d'Armor, France. The best ratio sensitivity/sampling cost wa

The total of 75 mosquito species recorded in Accra have declined to 28 species. Contributing factors to this decline and the reduction in prevalence of malaria and bancroftian filariasis in Accra presently include extensive water pollution and a fairly high daily mosquito mortality due to several factors including loss of natural adult resting places, use of mosquito repellents and the probable increase of Anopheles arabiensis population. Presently low yellow fever incidence is due inter alia to loss of its feral vectors and reduced intradomiciliary breeding of Aedes aegypti (L) although more

A comparative study of the efficiency of ovitraps and larval-traps was undertaken with a view to improving the entomological survey of vectors of Dengue and Yellow Fever-Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus-in S. Paulo State, Brazil. The region studied is infected only by Aedes albopictus, a species that keeps to wild habitats but colonizes artificial breeding grounds as well. The first part of the study was located in a periurban area of Tremembé county were 3 hollon trees, 23 ovitraps and 5 larval-traps were compared. The second part of these experiments took place in Lavrinhas county (Pinheir

After more than 13 years of aerial larviciding, the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West-Africa (OCP) is considering the future of its control activities. In the original OCP-area the prevalence of infection has been brought down to very low levels and cessation of larviciding is being contemplated. The introduction of ivermectin has broadened the spectrum of available control measures. Countries outside the OCP are also planning chemotherapy-based onchocerciasis control. The prediction of the epidemiological impact of the different control options is difficult in view of the many factors

African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) occurs in some 200 known foci within tsetse inhabited areas in sub-saharan Africa, where an estimated 50 million people are at risk of acquiring infection. Only 25,000 new patients are reported each year but this is an underestimate. Where medical surveillance was inadequate or lacking, serious epidemics could occur and this potential risk makes the disease one of the serious health problems in sub-saharan Africa. The chronic gambiense form of sleeping sickness occurs in West and Central Africa, while the acute rhodesiense form occurs in East and Sou

Both acquired and innate resistance to African trypanosomiasis can occur in cattle. The former raises the possibility of a vaccine against tsetsetransmitted metacyclic trypanosomes which have been shown to have a smaller repertoire of variable antigens than bloodstream parasites. The latter provides two further avenues of approach: firstly, trypanotolerant breeds are being increasingly exploited and improved by conventional management and breeding methods including embryo transfer; secondly, research is being carried out into the factors associated with their innate resistance, i.e., the contr

BACKGROUND: Despite their crucial roles in insect olfaction and insecticide resistance, the functional diversity of chemosensory proteins (CSPs) remains largely underexplored due to challenges in their characterization. Leveraging the protein interactome for the functional characterization of CSPs may represent a feasible approach.
RESULTS: An interactome approach was utilized to elucidate the function of NlCSP1 in Nilaparvata lugens. We identified a GRP94/LMAN1-MCFD2 axis that governs the folding and secretion of NlCSP1. NlGRP94 and NlGRP78 act as chaperones, and NlLMAN1-NlMCFD2 complex cont

Ionotropic γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors are the predominant inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors in the insect nervous system and serve as critical targets for insecticides. Meta-diamide insecticides exert their effects by binding to GABA receptors, inhibiting chloride ion influx, causing insects excited and convulsed, ultimately leading to death. To develop novel insecticides with enhanced bioactivity, this study selected broflanilide as a lead compound and employed scaffold hopping and substituent modification strategies to design and synthesize a series of meta-diamide derivatives

Bursicon, a heterodimeric neuropeptide composed of Burs-α and its binding subunit Partner of bursicon (Pburs), is primarily known to regulate insect cuticle tanning and also participates in wing expansion, reproduction and immunity. Pburs is highly expressed during pheromone gland (PG) maturation in female Helicoverpa armigera, a major agricultural pest, indicating its potential role in PG development and function. In this study, we cloned the full-length coding sequence of HaPburs and verified its high conservation across insects. qPCR revealed PG transcripts peaking at 48 h post-emergence in

Insect heat and cold tolerance can be constrained by multiple factors, either natural, such as elevation, or anthropogenic, as pesticide exposure. Under a scenario of global change, alterations to physiological processes for tolerating thermal extremes and controlling self-temperature could make insect populations vulnerable. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate whether exposure to ivermectin, a pesticide used in livestock pastures around the world, affects thermal tolerance, thermoregulation and energetic status of several populations of the dung beetle Euoniticellus intermedius (Reiche)

Insect olfactory receptors have evolved to detect a wide range of chemicals and biomolecules, offering a promising foundation for next-generation chemical sensors. We report the first direct integration of the odorant receptor MhOR5 from Machilis hrabei onto a graphene field-effect transistor (gFET) for selective, label-free detection of small organic compounds (SOCs). Large scale production of MhOR5 was achieved for the first time, yielding a stable tetrameric protein (80% purity) with up to 3-month stability. High-quality gFETs were fabricated at the wafer scale and quality controlled before

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is commonly used to immobilize insects and to induce reproduction in bees. However, despite its wide use and potential off-target impacts, its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we used Bombus impatiens to examine whether CO2 impacts are mediated by anoxia and whether these mechanisms differ between female castes or following mating in queens. We examined the behavior, physiology and gene expression of workers, mated queens and virgin queens following exposure to anoxia, hypoxia, full and partial hypercapnia, and controls. Hypercapnia and anoxia caused i

The pyrokinin (PK)/pheromone biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide (PBAN) family, which is defined by a conserved C-terminal pentapeptide (FXPRLamide), is involved in many physiological processes in insects. In the oriental armyworm Mythimna separata, the larvae exhibit a variety of color patterns in response to changes in population density, which are caused by melanization and a reddish coloration hormone (MRCH), which is a member of the FXPRLamide neuropeptides. Interestingly, in some lepidopteran insects, MRCH is known as a PBAN, which activates the pheromone gland to produce sex pheromones

Mating induces behavioral and physiological changes in female insects-collectively referred to as the female post-mating response (PMR)-that facilitate the production of progeny. PMRs are elicited by transfer of male-derived seminal components during mating, but are altered by other factors, including adult age. Increased female age is often accompanied by declines in fertility. However, mating shortly after emergence also impacts fertility in the insect model Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we determined the age post-emergence when females of the vector mosquito Aedes aegypti can be inseminate

Enveloped viruses hijack not only the host translation processes, but also its glycosylation machinery, and to a variable extent cover viral surface proteins with tolerogenic host-like structures. SARS-CoV-2 surface protein S presents as a trimer on the viral surface and is covered by a dense shield of N-linked glycans, and a few O-glycosites have been reported. The location of O-glycans is controlled by a large family of initiating enzymes with variable expression in cells and tissues and hence is difficult to predict. Here, we used our well-established O-glycoproteomic workflows to map the p
