BACKGROUND/AIMS: The immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody response is considered to be protective and beneficial for the control of periodontal lesions. This study analysed IgG subclass antibody levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis in patients with both aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and chronic periodontitis (CP).
METHODS: Subgingival plaque and peripheral blood samples were collected from patients with localized AgP (n = 13), generalized AgP (n = 28) and generalized CP (n = 27) and from 14 periodontally healthy controls. P. gingivalis was identified in subgingival pockets using a polymerase chain

IgG2 is elevated in localized but not in generalized aggressive periodontitis (AgP). Exposure to pathogenic bacteria is essential for disease. Immune responses are dominated by IgG2 reactive with bacterial surface carbohydrates. We used variance component analyses to assess IgG2 heritability and determine whether genes that influence IgG2 are the same genes that influence disease susceptibility. We studied 17 Caucasian and 43 African American families with two or more localized or generalized AgP-affected members (274 subjects with IgG2 measurements). Only 16% of the variance in IgG2 was attri

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Different cytokine genotypes have been described in periodontal disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate the genetic association of two previously described interleukin-10 (IL-10) polymorphisms in patients with aggressive (AP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) and to investigate possible associations with clinical manifestations.
METHODS: Based on clinical parameters and radiographs, 23 patients with CP and 18 patients with AP were included in the study. Additionally, 21 age-matched healthy subjects served as a control group. Genomic DNA was isolated from whole b

This review addresses the recent World Workshop Consensus Conference (WWCC) decision to eliminate Localized Aggressive Periodontitis (LAgP) in young adults as a distinct form of periodontitis. A "Consensus" implies widespread, if not unanimous, agreement among participants. However, a significant number of attendees were opposed to the elimination of the LAgP classification. The substantial evidence supporting a unique diagnosis for LAgP includes the (1) incisor/molar pattern of disease, (2) young age of onset, (3) rapid progression of attachment and bone loss, (4) familial aggregation across

AIM: To evaluate the local immunoinflammatory profiles in localized aggressive periodontitis patients (LAP) before and after periodontal treatment and maintenance.
METHODS: Sixty-six African-Americans with LAP (7-21 years old) were included. After periodontal examination, all patients received periodontal treatment with mechanical debridement plus systemic amoxicillin/metronidazole for 7 days. Gingival crevicular fluid was collected from diseased and healthy sites at baseline and 3, 6, 12, and 24 months following treatment. Levels of 16 inflammatory/bone resorption markers were determined usi

Here, we report a case of generalized chronic periodontitis with furcation involvement that was treated successfully by means of surgical intervention. The patient was a 43-year-old man requesting treatment for periodontal disease. An initial examination revealed 42% of sites with a probing depth of ≥4 mm and 42.9% of sites with bleeding on probing. The maxillary molars showed varying degrees of furcation involvement. Radiographic examination revealed bone resorption in the molar and mandibular anterior teeth regions. Microbiological examination of subgingival plaque revealed the presence of P

Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) presents a reduced response to non-surgical therapy. However, it is not clear if the initial clinical, microbiological or immunological characteristics are impacting the worse response to treatment. This study aimed to identify the predictive value of clinical, microbiological and immunological patterns on the clinical response to therapy in GAgP patients. Twenty-four GAgP patients were selected, and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and subgingival biofilm were collected. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella f

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: MicroRNA-146a (miR-146a) is a small noncoding RNA that plays a critical role in the negative regulation of the innate immune response, and the dysregulation of miR-146a has been associated with several inflammatory disorders. In generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) the degree of clinical inflammation appears to be similar to that of chronic periodontitis, and, in this situation, age of onset and family history are important additional criteria for diagnosis. This study was performed to evaluate the level of miR-146a expressed in gingival tissues of patients wit

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is a form of periodontitis characterized by rapid attachment loss in otherwise healthy individuals. Although different treatment options have been explored for management of the disease, control of disease progression and subsequent regeneration of the attachment apparatus are considered the ideal treatment objectives. Limited evidence is available with respect to the efficacy of different regenerative materials in the treatment of AgP.
CASE PRESENTATION: The present case report describes periodontal regeneration techniques and 6-month outcomes in

HLA-B27 is having strong association to ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and other inflammatory diseases collectively known as seronegative spondyloarthropathy. In literature, although the evidence for association between AS and periodontitis as well as AS and HLA-B27 are there but the association of aggressive periodontitis in HLA-B27 positive patient with AS are not there. We hypothesize that there may be a common pathogenesis in aggressive periodontitis and ankylosing spondylitis in HLA-B27 patient. A 27-years-old female presented with the features of generalized aggressive periodontitis and dif

An atypical and rare case report is presented here of a 16 years old female patient who presented with severe, unilateral, gingival enlargement along with aggressive periodontitis around first molars that was confined to the left side of her mouth. A careful recording of the case history and results of clinical examination, laboratory blood analysis, radiological findings, and microbiological and histopathological investigations were noted and a critical review of similar conditions was taken into account to arrive at the said diagnosis.

AIM: Multiple studies have reported associations between periodontitis and particular human leukocyte antigens (HLA). Because associations are inconsistent, we conducted a systematic literature review and a meta-analysis focusing on Caucasian case-control studies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A literature search reporting on the distribution of HLA class I and II phenotypes in Caucasian patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) and aggressive periodontitis (AP) was performed. Data sources included electronic databases and bibliographies of published articles. Screening and data abstraction were condu

BACKGROUND: Levels of the inflammation marker calprotectin in gingival crevicular fluid correspond to clinical and biochemical parameters of periodontal inflammation. Neutrophil granulocytes (polymorphonuclear neutrophils: PMNs) are supposed to be the main source of calprotectin in gingival crevicular fluid, but evidence is still lacking. The influence of periodontal therapy on gingival crevicular fluid levels of calprotectin has not yet been determined.
OBJECTIVES: Gingival crevicular fluid levels of calprotectin were monitored during therapy for generalized aggressive periodontitis. Interre
