Analysing the correlation between differential corneal thickness along principal meridians and corneal astigmatism: implications for whole-eye astigmatism.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the correlation between corneal astigmatism and disparity in corneal thickness. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, data from 342 patients (684 eyes) were collected. The Sirius three-dimensional corneal topography system was utilised to ascertain the mean corneal thickness of the meridians. Correlation analyses were conducted between the mean difference in corneal thickness along the two principal meridians and the astigmatic values computed by simulated keratometry values (Sim-K) for total corneal astigmatism (TCA) and posterior corneal astigmatism…

Assessing the astigmatism-reducing effect of toric intraocular lenses in eyes with low astigmatism: randomized masked bilateral comparison.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the astigmatism-reducing effect of toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) for low amounts of corneal astigmatism. SETTING: Hanusch Hospital, Vienna, Austria. DESIGN: Randomized, masked, controlled trial with bilateral comparison. METHODS: Patients scheduled for bilateral cataract surgery and a corneal astigmatism in both eyes between 0.75 diopters (D) and 1.5 D were included in this study. The first eye was randomized to receive either a toric IOL or a nontoric IOL, and the contralateral eye received the other type of IOL. At the follow-up visits, optical biometry, corneal mea…

The Association Between Ocular Residual Astigmatism and the Efficacy of Astigmatism Correction Via Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE).

INTRODUCTION: Astigmatism correction after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery is affected by several factors, including ocular residual astigmatism (ORA), which accounts for the vector difference between refractive and corneal astigmatism. Previous studies revealed the relationship between ORA and astigmatism correction after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). However, in SMILE surgery, no comprehensive study exploring the link between these two variables has been performed. We have therefore assessed the association between ORA and astigmatism correction after SMI…

Effect of the Vectorial Difference Between Manifest Refractive Astigmatism and Anterior Corneal Astigmatism on Topography-Guided LASIK Outcomes.

PURPOSE: To characterize the preoperative vectorial difference between manifest refractive astigmatism and anterior corneal astigmatism, termed ocular residual astigmatism (ORA), and to investigate its influence on topography-guided laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) outcomes. METHODS: Comparative retrospective analysis of 21,581 consecutive eyes treated on the manifest refractive astigmatism. Standard outcomes of the 7,180 eyes with the lowest ORA (first tercile: 0.35 ± 0.13 diopters [D]) were compared to the 7,208 eyes with the highest ORA (last tercile: 1.13 ± 0.25 D). RESULTS: The ORA …

Meridional Attentional Asymmetries in Astigmatic Eyes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of attention orientation in young myopic adults with astigmatism. METHODS: The effect of attention on foveal meridional performance and anisotropy was measured in corrected myopes with various levels of astigmatism (with-the-rule astigmatism ≤ -0.75D, Axis: 180 ± 20) using orientation-based attention. Attention was manipulated by instructing subjects to attend to either the horizontal or the vertical line of a central pre-stimulus (a pulsed cross) along separate blocks of trials. For each attention condition, meridional acuity and reaction times were measure…

A Rare Cause Of High Astigmatism In Pseudophakia.

We present a case of a 65-year-old Pakistani woman who underwent an uneventful standard left phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intra-ocular lens placement for a mature senile cataract. She was observed to develop post-operative astigmatism secondary to a tilted intra-ocular lens and required repeat surgical intervention to correct the malposition. Per-operatively, the lens was found to be defective with a fixed bend at the haptic-optic junction which necessitated the need for an intra-ocular lens exchange procedure that restored adequate vision. The study highlighted defects in the st…

[Femtosecond laser-assisted astigmatic keratotomy].

BACKGROUND: For more than 100 years keratotomy has been in the focus of ophthalmology as a treatment option for correction of astigmatism. Femtosecond laser technology provides a new level of precision, standardization and control as well as completely new options, such as purely intrastromal incisions. METHOD: The current literature is summarized with respect to femtosecond laser-assisted astigmatic keratotomy (FSAK) in combination with cataract surgery, where less astigmatic correction is necessary as well as after corneal surgery, such as perforating keratoplasty, where higher astigmatic e…
