Psychological Profile of Aviators and Flight Aspirants with High-Risk and Self-Harm Behavior.

BACKGROUND: In a high-stakes context like aviation, deliberate self-harm (DSH) warrants attention, as it may signal underlying psychological vulnerabilities. Understanding the psychological risk profiles of civil aviators and aspirants with DSH is therefore crucial for ensuring aviation safety. A dearth of research in this area has prompted the need for profiling psychological risk factors for DSH and high-risk behavior in civil aviation to ensure fitness to fly. The current paper is a review of six cases assigned for DSH referred to the qualified examiner. CASE SERIES: A retrospective case s…

A Cross-Sectional Audiometric Analysis of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Military Aviators.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to establish a quantitative relationship between the occurrence of certain auditory impairments in Chinese military pilots and their flight hours. The investigation will determine whether the prevalence of left-ear vulnerability necessitates the implementation of cockpit noise control measures. METHODS: Cross-sectional pure-tone audiometry (0.125-8 kHz) was performed in 155 active-duty aviators with an average time of 2241 h in 2024. Hearing loss (HL) was defined as pure tone average (4, 6, 8 kHz) ≥25 dB. Asymmetry was tested with paired t-tests.

A Quantitative Analysis of Internal and External Loads in Aviation Firefighting Using a Simulated Scenario.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Aviation firefighting is a strenuous occupation that requires individuals to engage in intense physical activity amidst elevated stress levels and extreme environmental conditions. Despite this, there has been limited investigation regarding the internal and external loads associated with aviation firefighting tasks, which include hose dragging, stair climbing, casualty evacuation, and fire extinguishing in airports and aircrafts. The aim of this study was to examine the internal and external loads placed on aviation firefighters. By identifying these demands, this study…

[Characteristics of a negative effect of aviation noise on hearing organ of aircraft maintenance personnel].

Otolaryngological examination was carried out of 80 engineers and technicians engaged in maintenance of aircrafts in the airports. They are continuously exposed to occupational aviation noise and therefore are at risk for chronic neurosensory hypoacusis. Pure tone audiogram registers in them a rise in hearing thresholds throughout the whole band of frequencies studied. This means that aviation maintenance staff is exposed to noise containing highly intensive infrasound and high-frequency components. The detected pathology directly correlated with duration of exposure to noise. Development of n…

Policies and Toxicological Screenings for No Drug Addiction: An Example from the Civil Aviation Workforce.

INTRODUCTION: Since 2008, Italian legislators, with the aim of ensuring public safety, have made it mandatory for an occupational doctor (OD) to assess specific categories of workers to exclude those who may have consumed drugs of abuse. Due to the relevance of work activities relating to the civil aviation and airport sector, a policy based on the use of training and information tools, as well as a health surveillance protocol, has been undertaken since 2009. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 61,008 workers at a commercial airline underwent health surveillance between 2009 and 2019. Followin…

Aeromedical regulation of aviators using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for depressive disorders.

This report, prepared at the request of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA), reviews the present status of aeromedical regulation of depressive disorders and antidepressant medications, emphasizing the role of serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Aeromedical certifying authorities (CAs) generally prohibit pilots from flying with a diagnosed depressive disorder, and also prohibit flying while taking antidepressant medications, including SSRIs. Some CAs are reassessing these prohibitions, which are based on long aeromedical practices, in view of changing medical management of dep

Traumatic vertebral artery occlusion in an aviator: case report and update on diagnostic technologies.

Traumatic vertebral artery injuries are relatively rare. Until recently, insufficient neurodiagnostic technology and a lack of normative data for the population of USAF aviators prevented recommending flying waivers following such vascular injuries. We report the case of an aviator who experienced a traumatic right vertebral artery occlusion with distal embolization. Timely access to a state-of-the-art neurodiagnostic evaluation, which included time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and standard contrast angiography, provided anatomic imaging at the time of injury and during the

Dose calculations in aircrafts after Fukushima nuclear power plant accident - Preliminary study for aviation operations.

There is little information to decision support in air traffic management in case of nuclear releases into the atmosphere. In this paper, the dose estimation due to both, external exposure (i.e. cloud immersion, deposition inside and outside the aircraft), and due to internal exposure (i.e, inhalation of radionuclides inside the aircraft) to passengers and crew is calculated for a worst-case emergency scenario. The doses are calculated for different radionuclides and activities. Calculations are mainly considered according to International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommend

Analytical Representations for Characterizing the Global Aviation Radiation Environment Based on Model and Measurement Databases.

The Nowcast of Atmospheric Ionizing Radiation for Aviation Safety climatological model and the Automated Radiation Measurements for Aerospace Safety (ARMAS) statistical database are presented as polynomial fit equations. Using equations based on altitude, L shell, and geomagnetic conditions an effective dose rate for any location from a galactic cosmic ray (GCR) environment can be calculated. A subset of the ARMAS database is represented by a second polynomial fit equation for the GCR plus probable relativistic energetic particle (REP; Van Allen belt REP) effective dose rates within a narrow b…

Midair collisions in U.S. civil aviation 2000-2004: the roles of radio communications and altitude.

BACKGROUND: Midair collisions are destructive to aircraft and often fatal to occupants, with the additional possibility of death and destruction on the ground. We sought to determine the characteristics of civil aviation mid-air collisions in U.S. airspace with focus on the altitudes at which the collisions took place and radio communications prior to the collisions. METHODS: Accident reports published by the National Transportation and Safety Board for the period 2000-2004 were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Additional information was extracted from the narrative report of each accid…
