Giant cell arteritis (GCA) of the uterus and adnexa is extremely rare--only nine cases have been reported. We report a further case, in which the patient was found to have GCA of the myometrial arteries on routine hysterectomy. She then developed another rare manifestation of GCA, involvement of the axillary arteries causing arm claudication and chronically ischaemic hands.

Most of the studies reported variation in one or the other cord or its branches, but very few studies have reported about all cords lateral to the brachial plexus. The brachial plexus variations are usually also associated with the variations in th …

Degenerative arterial aneurysms can occur in any vascular territory. However, they are exceedingly rare in the axillary artery. Complications of axillary artery aneurysms may result in acute vascular insufficiency and neurological deficits. Prompt treatment should be employed in the management of this condition. We report a case of an atraumatic degenerative axillary artery aneurysm that was treated with transaxillary open surgical bypass.

Axillary arterial injury is a rare complication of non-recurrent glenohumeral joint dislocation. Previously this type of injury would have required open exploration of the axillary artery with associated risk of iatrogenic injury to the axillary vein or brachial plexus. We present the case of a 75-year-old lady, who following a fall in her own home, sustained a dislocation of her right shoulder joint complicated by avulsion of a branch of her axillary artery. We describe the successful endovascular management of the injury using a self-expanding stent and propose this as the preferred surgical…

The proximal humerus internal locking system is an internal fixation device consisting of a low-profile plate and locking screws, which is used for the fixation of three- and four-part fractures of the proximal humerus. We describe a case in which the screws cut out of the humeral head causing injury to the axillary artery necessitating urgent removal of the implant.

PURPOSE: By reviewing our experience, we evaluated the presentation, management, and long-term outcome of patients with subclavian and axillary artery injuries resulting from trauma.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 38 patients who received treatment for subclavian or axillary artery injuries in the Emergency and Trauma Department of Medical Faculty of Istanbul, Istanbul University between January 1989 and July 2002.
RESULTS: Arterial injuries were repaired with an end-to-end anastomosis in 10 (26.3%) patients, primary repair in 6 (15.7%), autologous vein graft interposition …

A case of axillary artery injury resulting from a minimally displaced fracture of the neck of the humerus is reported. Very few such injuries have been reported previously. The mechanism of injury can be from sharp bony fragments, overstretching of the artery especially when atheromatous, or torn intima. Angiography should be performed, followed by exploration where indicated.

Axillary artery injury is a rare but complex surgical problem that often requires challenging exposures, lengthy operations, and morbid outcomes for repair. For these reasons, endovascular repair is an attractive alternative as it obviates many of the challenges present with open repair. While pseudoaneurysms, dissections, and short segment injuries with limited arterial disruption are regularly treated endovascularly, complete arterial transections are almost exclusively treated with open repair as obtaining wire access across the site of injury is often not possible. Here we report a case of…

Knowledge of vascularization is essential for surgical planning and interventional procedures in the axillary region. The axillary artery gives off branches supplying the shoulder, thoracic wall, and scapula. It then continues as the brachial artery, which furnishes branches to the arm and elbow. Minor variations in these branches are common. However, dissection of a formalin-fixed right upper limb revealed an axillary artery that bifurcated into a superficial brachial artery, which did not give off any branches, and a posterior trunk, that gave rise to all the branches typically originating f…

Redo coronary artery bypass grafting after an in-situ right internal thoracic artery graft to the left anterior descending artery is challenging. For such a 52-year-old male patient with a history of mediastinitis, we performed redo bypass grafting of the right coronary artery using a saphenous vein graft and xiphoid resection via the suprasternal route with the left axillary artery as the inflow source and the graft were patent. The axillary artery is an inflow source for patients with inaccessible aorta. Combining the suprasternal route with a xiphoid resection provides a bail-out option.

BACKGROUND: Axillary artery aneurysms are rare conditions, and their causes are various. They can determine severe complications, so the treatment is extremely important.
METHODS: We report the case of a young man affected by a saccular axillary artery aneurysm associated with intramuscular arteriovenous malformation, without symptoms except for the presence of a pulsatile mass. Duplex scan and computed tomography scan have been essential for a correct diagnosis and planning of the treatment. At first, the patient was submitted to coil embolization of an efferent vessel, and then he was treat…
