Preoperative HIFU ablation combined with femoral bone marrow nailing for the treatment of pathological fracture of femur: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bone is one of the common sites of metastasis in lung cancer. Pathological fractures of the femur significantly reduce patients' quality of life and increase the risk of death. However, there is still no consensus on the optimal treatment of pathological femoral fractures. The authors' report provides a treatment method for a patient with pathological fracture of lung cancer with preoperative HIFU lesion ablation followed by combined intramedullary nail fixation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old Chinese woman was hospitalized with severe pain in her right thigh. X

Postoperative Complications of Intramedullary Nailing for Impending and Pathologic Fractures of the Humerus Due to Bone Metastases-A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Intramedullary nailing (IMN) is a common option for managing impending or pathologic fractures of the humerus secondary to metastatic disease. We sought to assess the (1) early complications, (2) failure rates and mechanisms, and (3) functional outcomes. A systematic review using the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was performed. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. The study was registered on PROSERO (CRD42023406905). The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist was used for quality assessment

Intramedullary Nailing with and without the Use of Bone Cement for Impending and Pathologic Fractures of the Humerus in Multiple Myeloma and Metastatic Disease.

Although intramedullary nailing (IMN) is considered the standard of care for the surgical management of most femur metastatic diseases, the optimal treatment of metastatic humeral impending and/or pathologic fractures is still debatable. Moreover, the use of cemented humeral nails has not been thoroughly studied, and only a few small series have compared their results with uncemented nails. The purpose of this study was to compare the (1) survivorship, (2) functional outcomes, and (3) perioperative complications in patients receiving cemented versus uncemented humerus IMN for impending or comp

Biomechanical comparison of intramedullary nail and plate osteosynthesis for extra-articular proximal tibial fractures with segmental bone defect.

Purpose: Proximal tibial fractures are common, but the current available internal fixation strategies remain debatable, especially for comminuted fractures. This study aimed to compare the biomechanical stability of three internal fixation strategies for extra-articular comminuted proximal tibial fractures. Methods: A total of 90 synthetic tibiae models of simulated proximal tibial fractures with segmental bone defects were randomly divided into three groups: Single lateral plating (LP), double plating (DP) and intramedullary nailing (IN). Based on the different number of fixed screws, the abo

Femoral bone transport by a monolateral external fixator with or without the use of intramedullary nail: a single-department retrospective study.

BACKGROUNDS: Treatment for bone defect remains a challenge for orthopedists. Bone transport gives an effective alternative, which can be performed with an external fixator alone or combined with an intramedullary nail. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. We present a retrospective study to find out the optimal choice by evaluating the outcomes of treatment for femoral bone defect with two methods. METHODS: Two groups of patients, the monolateral external fixator alone (group A, n = 13) and the monolateral external fixator combined with intramedullary nail (group B, n = 15), were compar

Impact of Combining Alfacalcidol With Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation on Bone Mineral Density, Serum Bone Metabolites, and Inflammatory Markers in Elderly Patients With Osteoporotic Intertrochanteric Fractures.

AIM: Proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) fixation remains an effective surgical method in effectively managing intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis. While postoperative anti-osteoporotic therapy is essential, only a part of the elderly patients adhere to anti-osteoporosis treatment. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of combining alfacalcidol (an anti-osteoporotic drug) with PFNA fixation, as well as their effects on serum bone metabolic markers and inflammatory indicators in elderly patients with osteoporotic intertrochanteric
