The present study was undertaken to elucidate the effect of non-luteal oviductal proteins on sperm characteristics in Murrah buffaloes. Oviducts from healthy buffaloes were collected immediately after slaughter and the oestrous cycle phase was determined as either luteal or non-luteal based on ovarian morphology. Non-luteal oviducts (n = 80) were flushed from the isthmic end of the oviduct with PBS, fluid was centrifuged at 10,000 g at 4 degrees C for 20 min and then dialysed and clarified. PURPOSE: We have carried out experiments to determine if human cervical mucus can act as an in vitro selective barrier against spermatozoa morphologically normal that carry genetic structural abnormalities.
METHODS: Sperm chromatin abnormalities have been evaluated by Chromomycin A3 and "endogenous" nick translation.
RESULTS: The data obtained have shown that spermatozoa possessing higher levels of DNA protamination are more proficient in crossing the cervical mucus barrier. Moreover, the levels of positivity to endogenous nick translation treatment was practically zero in such spermatozoa.

The McKusick-Kaufman-syndrome, also known by the name of hydrometrocolpos-hexadactyly syndrome, is an autosomal-recessive hereditary disease or spontaneous malformation. A hydrometrocolpos is formed in the process by a transversal vaginal septum and subsequently acts like an abdominal tumour to compress the iliac veins and to result in supravesical obstruction, eventually causing a condition of ileus and respiratory problems. The records of 25 diethylstilbestrol-exposed women under treatment for reproductive dysfunction were reviewed. A tendency toward pregnancy wastage (5 of 10 patients), ectopic pregnancy (2 of 8 patients), cervical factor infertility (15 of 20 patients), hysterographic abnormalities (15 of 19 patients), and ovulatory dysfunction (10 of 25 patients) was noted. With the exceptions of ovulation induction and cervical cerclage, no means of treatment can be recommended.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the usefulness of ethinyl estradiol, a drug no longer commercially produced in most countries, in treating various fertility related issues.
METHODS: Twenty to 40 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol can be started on day 2 or 3 of the cycle and combined with exogenous gonadotropin can be useful in improving hostile cervical mucus or inducing ovulation in women with hypergonadotropic amenorrhea. It can be used from the day after stopping clomiphene citrate to help negate the adverse effect of this drug on cervical mucus.
