An IT-based self-checking system of spreadsheet exercises for learners with visual impairments.

PURPOSE: In vocational education and training of computer literacy as part of vocational rehabilitation, learners often work on problem-solving exercises as self-study assignments, and check if their answers are correct. Sighted learners can get information on their incorrect answers by comparing their answers with the correct answers. However, learners with visual impairments largely depend on their teachers for getting this feedback. To remove this dependence, we designed a self-checking system for learners with visual impairments to verify the correctness of their answers. In this paper, we

Neurofeedback Training of the Control Network in Children Improves Brain Computer Interface Performance.

In the past 20 years, neural engineering has made unprecedented progress in the interpretation of brain information (e.g., brain-computer interfaces) and in neuromodulation (e.g., electromagnetic stimulation and neurofeedback). However, there has been little research aiming to improve the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using neuromodulation. The present study presents a novel design for a neurofeedback training (NFT) method to improve the operation of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI and further explores its underlying mechanisms. The use of NFT to upre

Feasibility of the Enhancing Participation In the Community by improving Wheelchair Skills (EPIC Wheels) program: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Many older adults rely on a manual wheelchair for mobility but typically receive little, if any, training on how to use their wheelchair effectively and independently. Standardized skill training is an effective intervention, but limited access to clinician trainers is a substantive barrier. Enhancing Participation in the Community by Improving Wheelchair Skills (EPIC Wheels) is a 1-month monitored home training program for improving mobility skills in older novice manual wheelchair users, integrating principles from andragogy and social cognitive theory. The purpose of this study

Biomechanical analysis of wheelchair athletes with paraplegia during cross-training exercises.

CONTEXT: Extreme conditioning programs (ECPs), such as CrossFit®, are a relatively new method of fitness with rapid growth in individuals with paraplegia. However, it is unknown if wheelchair users are at an additional risk of musculoskeletal injury during these exercises. Biomechanical characterization is necessary to determine the safety and efficacy of ECPs as an exercise modality for wheelchair users with paraplegia. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the three-dimensional (3-D) thorax and upper extremity joint kinematics of paraplegic wheelchair athletes during exercises commonly prescribed as p

Bedside ultrasonography (US), Echoscopy and US point of care as a new kind of stethoscope for Internal Medicine Departments: the training program of the Italian Internal Medicine Society (SIMI).

In recent years, thanks to the development of miniaturized ultrasound devices, comparable to personal computers, tablets and even to smart phones, we have seen an increasing use of bedside ultrasound in internal medicine departments as a novel kind of ultrasound stethoscope. The clinical ultrasound-assisted approach has proved to be particularly useful in assessing patients with nodules of the neck, dyspnoea, abdominal pain, and with limb edema. In several cases, it has allowed a simple, rapid and precise diagnosis. Since 2005, the Italian Society of Internal Medicine and its Ultrasound Study

AneuSI: A software tool to isolate a region of interest in cerebral aneurysms from full geometrical models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Modeling cerebral aneurysms using patient-specific geometries demands significant computational resources, particularly when analyzing large datasets or to retrieve training data for machine learning techniques. Smaller domains representing the aneurysm and nearby vasculature are preferred to reduce computational cost, but manual extraction of these regions introduces limitations in time, repeatability, and user-dependent bias. In this work, we present and study the accuracy of AneuSI, an open-source software tool designed to automatically extract a region of interest

Optimization of the Chronic Kidney Disease-Peritoneal Dialysis App to Improve Care for Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis in Northeast Thailand: User-Centered Design Study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in Thailand is increasing rapidly in part because of Thailand's Peritoneal Dialysis First policy. PD is a home-based renal replacement therapy in which patients with chronic kidney disease perform up to 4 exchanges of dialysate fluid per day in the peritoneal cavity. Overhydration is one of the most common complications in patients on PD and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. To monitor hydration status, patients collect hydration metrics, including body weight, blood pressure, urine output, and ultrafiltration volume, f

Toward an Automatic System for Computer-Aided Assessment in Facial Palsy.

Importance: Quantitative assessment of facial function is challenging, and subjective grading scales such as House-Brackmann, Sunnybrook, and eFACE have well-recognized limitations. Machine learning (ML) approaches to facial landmark localization carry great clinical potential as they enable high-throughput automated quantification of relevant facial metrics from photographs and videos. However, the translation from research settings to clinical application still requires important improvements. Objective: To develop a novel ML algorithm for fast and accurate localization of facial landmarks i

Evaluating the QUIT-PRIMO clinical practice ePortal to increase smoker engagement with online cessation interventions: a national hybrid type 2 implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Effective web-assisted tobacco interventions (WATIs) have been underutilized by smokers; moreover, despite practice guideline recommendations, clinical teams do not routinely refer smokers to WATIs. Our goal was to test a clinical practice innovation, an ePortal designed to change practice and patient behavior. Our hypotheses were that the integrated system would result in increased smoker referrals, with an automated follow-up system resulting in more smoker registrations and finally augmentations of the WATI would result in more smokers quitting at 6 months. METHODS: Practice eP

Automatic extraction of the mitral valve chordae geometry for biomechanical simulation.

PURPOSE: Mitral valve computational models are widely studied in the literature. They can be used for preoperative planning or anatomical understanding. Manual extraction of the valve geometry on medical images is tedious and requires special training, while automatic segmentation is still an open problem. METHODS: We propose here a fully automatic pipeline to extract the valve chordae architecture compatible with a computational model. First, an initial segmentation is obtained by sub-mesh topology analysis and RANSAC-like model-fitting procedure. Then, the chordal structure is optimized wit

Wheelchair movement signal classification from EEG for motor-impaired individuals using novel deep learning architecture.

Purpose: Traditional wheelchair controls often limit independence and pose safety risks for motor-impaired users. To address these challenges, this study explores the potential of EEG-based control systems that allow users to operate powered wheelchairs through brain signals rather than physical movements. Materials and Methods: We developed a hybrid deep learning model that integrates Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and 1D-Convolutional Neural Networks (1D-CNN) with skip connections to capture both temporal and spatial EEG signal features. The model was trained and evaluated on a public EEG dat
