Serum angiotensin converting enzyme (SACE) activity is used as a marker of sarcoidosis activity and severity, but in chronic beryllium disease (CBD) the studies of SACE give conflicting results. We examined SACE activity in 23 CBD patients, five patients with beryllium sensitization, and 25 beryllium-exposed control subjects. The activity of enzymes of the antioxidant system and pO2 in the gastric mucosa (GM) was studied in patients with gastric ulcer. The various enzymes differed in activity. Along with low activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GP), and glutathione reductase (GR), both normal and increased values were encountered. In GM hypoxia the GP activity increased in the peri-ulcerous zone. There was no statistically significant increase of SOD activity and reduction of GR activity.

Esterase-D phenotypes and in vitro activity have been measured in red blood cells from 258 retinoblastoma patients and 73 unaffected relatives. The effect of eight doses of 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 UI of vitamin D2 administered every other day to three groups of rats, on the activities of some enzymes in the animals' liver was evaluated. In general terms, findings revealed a decrease in the activities of glucose-6-phosphatase, phosphorylase and arginase. Likewise, an increase of the activities of maltase and of glutamic oxaloacetic and glutamic pyruvic transaminases was observed.
