Atherogenic consequence of antiepileptic drugs: a study of intima-media thickness.

We intended to evaluate the carotid intima-media thickness (CA-IMT) as a surrogate factor for atherogenesis in epileptic patients on enzyme inducer (EI) antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) or valproate (VA). The study included 71 patients with epilepsy (37 females) aged 27.7 ± 8.1 and 71 age- and sex-matched non-epileptic subjects. Patients with history of at least 2 years antiepileptic treatment were enrolled. Subjects with known history of cardiovascular risk factors were not included. Thirty-eight patients (21 females) were treated with EI medications and 33 (16 females) with VA. CA-IMTs were measur

The long-term outcome of MOGAD: An observational national cohort study of 61 patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The prognosis in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a matter of debate. Our aim was to assess the long-term outcomes of patients with MOGAD. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the clinical and paraclinical data of patients from the French nationwide observatory study NOMADMUS who tested positive for MOG antibodies (MOG-IgG) and who had clinical follow-up of at least 8 years from their first episode. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients (median [range] age at onset 27 [3-69] years), with a median (mean; range) follow-up of 177 (

Scope and costs of autorefraction and photoscreening for childhood amblyopia-a systematic narrative review in relation to the EUSCREEN project data.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia screening can target reduced visual acuity (VA), its refractive risk factors, or both. VA testing is imprecise under 4 years of age, so automated risk-factor photoscreening appears an attractive option. This review considers photoscreening used in community services, focusing on costs, cost-effectiveness and scope of use, compared with EUSCREEN project Country Reports describing how photo- and automated screening is used internationally. METHODS: A systematic narrative review was carried out of all English language photoscreening literature to September 10th 2018, using

Vascular Tortuosity May Be Associated With Cervical Artery Dissection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dissection is an increasingly recognized cause of ischemic stroke, which occurs spontaneously or after trauma, in relatively young patients. We hypothesized that there might be a predisposing factor weakening the vascular wall and that arterial tortuosity might be higher in patients with dissection. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled cervical artery dissection (CerAD) patients who had undergone magnetic resonance angiography. Age- and sex-matched healthy subjects who underwent magnetic resonance angiography in a routine health examination were used as controls. The tor

Listeria monocytogenes Isolates Carrying Virulence-Attenuating Mutations in Internalin A Are Commonly Isolated from Ready-to-Eat Food Processing Plant and Retail Environments.

Listeria monocytogenes is a human foodborne pathogen that may cause an invasive disease known as listeriosis in susceptible individuals. Internalin A (InlA; encoded by inlA) is a virulence factor that facilitates crossing of host cell barriers by L. monocytogenes . At least 19 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in inlA that result in a premature stop codon (PMSC) have been described worldwide. SNPs leading to a PMSC in inlA have been shown to be causally associated with attenuated virulence. L. monocytogenes pathogens carrying virulence-attenuating (VA) mutations in inlA have been commonly

Structural and functional properties of snake venom prothrombin activators.

In this review we have summarized the current knowledge about the prothrombin activating principles present in the venom of a large number of different snake species. It appears that snake venom prothrombin activators can be classified into four different groups based on their structural properties and on their functional properties in prothrombin activation. Group I activators efficiently convert prothrombin into meizothrombin and their activity is not influenced by the non-enzymatic cofactors of the prothrombinase complex (CaCl2, factor Va and phospholipid). Group II and III activators can c…

The AhR-TFAP2A Axis Regulates Melanosome Transport by Directly Targeting Myosin Va and Mlph.

The skin serves as a barrier against environmental stresses. Melanocytes synthesize melanin to protect against ultraviolet (UV) radiation; however, excessive melanin can lead to hyperpigmentation disorders. Proper pigment distribution requires melanosome transport, mediated by a complex of Mlph, Myo Va, and Rab27a. Dysregulation of this transport machinery disrupts pigment homeostasis and contributes to various pigmentation disorders. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor and transcription factor TFAP2A are known regulators of melanocyte function, but their direct regulatory relationship remains uncle

A MicroRNA Derived from Adenovirus Virus-Associated RNAII Promotes Virus Infection via Posttranscriptional Gene Silencing.

The adenovirus (Ad) serotype 5 genome encodes two noncoding small RNAs (virus-associated RNAs I and II [VA-RNAI and -II]), which are approximately 160-nucleotide (nt) RNAs transcribed by RNA polymerase III. It is well known that VA-RNAI supports Ad infection via the inhibition of double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR), which recognizes double-stranded RNA and acts as an antiviral system. Recent studies revealed that VA-RNAs are processed into VA-RNA-derived microRNAs (miRNAs) (mivaRNAI and -II); however, we and another group recently demonstrated that mivaRNAI does not promote Ad r
