The commencement of the Industrial Revolution has resulted in an unprecedented increase in the concentration of atmospheric CO2 (pCO2). It is, therefore, important to understand how plant communities respond to increased levels of CO2 levels in the environment. To this end, we examined the effects of spatial variation in pCO2 on plant physiology using carbon isotope ratios (δ13C values) and stomatal index (SI) in C3 plant leaves along a transect from the central Ganga Plain to the foothills of the Himalayas with industrial and non-industrial zones. Our study shows that the plants adjacent to t…

Sherpa population is an ethnic group living in south mountainside of Himalayas for hundreds of years. They are famous as extraordinary mountaineers and guides, considered as a good example for successful adaptation to low oxygen environment in Tibetan highlands. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations might be important in the highland adaption given its role in coding core subunits of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. In this study, we sequenced the complete mtDNA genomes of 76 unrelated Sherpa individuals. Generally, Sherpa mtDNA haplogroup constitution was close to Tibetan populations…

Water scarcity necessitates efficient irrigation strategies in high-value crops like apple. While regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) is known to influence apple yield and quality, the optimal soil moisture threshold for automated systems in region-specific contexts remains poorly defined. This two-year study (2024-2025) evaluated the effects of four precise, soil moisture-based irrigation thresholds on the yield, fruit quality, and water productivity (WP) of 'Super Chief' apples in the northwestern Himalayas. An automated irrigation system using a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and calibrated s…

Sarcoptes scabiei was detected for the first time in skin scrapings, hair pluckings, and histologic sections from a blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) from the Shimshali Pamir in the Karakorum range of the western Himalaya in Pakistan (36 degrees 28'N, 75 degrees 36'E). Local reports suggest many hundred animals have been affected by a severe skin disease over a 10-yr period, but the shy nature of this species and the extreme climate that they inhabit meant only a single affected animal was available for detailed evaluation. The severe skin lesions were confined to the forelegs and brisket, and many

Nitric oxide (NO) is a freely diffusible, gaseous free radical and an important signaling molecule in animals. In plants, NO influences aspects of growth and development, and can affect plant responses to stress. In some cases, the effects of NO are the result of its interaction with reactive oxygen species (ROS). These interactions can be cytotoxic or protective. Because gibberellin (GA)-induced programmed cell death (PCD) in barley (Hordeum vulgare cv Himalaya) aleurone layers is mediated by ROS, we examined the effects of NO donors on PCD and ROS-metabolizing enzymes in this system. NO dono
