PURPOSE: To describe a case of cotton wool spots associated with interferon beta-1a treatment.
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 40-year-old man with a history of multiple sclerosis was on interferon beta-1a. He presented with cotton wool spots on fundus exam, which resolved and then recurred all while on therapy. Interferon was discontinued after the second episode and again the cotton wool spots resolved. Upon restarting the interferon, no further cotton wool spots have recurred.
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge this represents only the third case of interferon beta-1a associated

In Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS), as in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Sjögren's syndrome, an increased level of interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) is involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. In SLE and Sjögren's syndrome, cytokine production originates in plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) under the influence of immune complexes formed by DNA and RNA from improperly removed apoptotic or necrotic cells, together with IgG autoantibodies. We studied the role of soluble factors in the serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of AGS patients and their capacity to stimulate pDCs to produce IFN-

Interferon alfa-2a is a cytokine produced by recombinant DNA techniques and has antiproliferative, antiviral and immunomodulating effects. A number of case reports in the past have suggested relative safety of alpha-interferons during pregnancy with little or no effect on the fetus. A 15-year-old adolescent became pregnant while receiving alpha-interferon for essential thrombocythemia. She delivered a small-for-gestational age baby girl at 33 weeks gestation. The infant displayed a facial rash characteristic of neonatal lupus and transient thrombocytopenia; maternal and neonatal serologies wer

We report on a man who received interferon-alpha 2a therapy for kidney cancer and who subsequently developed propriospinal myoclonus. The myoclonus was noted at rest and during movement. The jerks were reinforced by cutaneous stimuli and tendon taps and spread to the spinal cord via polysynaptic propriospinal pathways. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis, spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalogram with back-averaging, and somatosensory-evoked potentials were normal. No antineuronal antibodies were found. Although the mechanism of interferon neurotoxicity remains unclear, the possibl…

BACKGROUND: Interferon alpha-2b (IFN alpha 2b) was recently shown to be effective as an alternative therapy for conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Herein, we report our successful management of CIN by the use of IFN alpha 2b.
CASE: A 73-year-old woman presented with a complaint of irritation due to a tumorous lesion in her left eye. Slit-lamp microscope examination revealed a tumorous lesion involving the bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva as well as the limbus, from the 3-o'clock position to the 8-o'clock position. She had already undergone cryotherapy in the same eye in another hos

Sarcoidosis is one of the possible rare complications of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy. Only a few reports have been published on this disease, and these have been associated with the treatment of malignant diseases, essential thrombocytosis, and chronic hepatitis C. We report on a 64-year-old man with chronic hepatitis B (HBsAg, HBeAg, HBV DNA-positive) who was treated with recombinant IFN-alpha-2b (5 MU three times weekly) for 28 weeks. Tolerance to treatment was very good; only a mild flu-like syndrome appeared. Twelve months after completing the therapy, a chest X-ray was performed …

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients have a high risk of recurrence within 5 years of hepatic resection and suitable long-term maintenance therapy is required. An open-ended controlled trial on 30 HBsAg positive Child Pugh's grade A cirrhotic patients was started in September 1986 using Wellferon (natural lymphoblastoid alpha interferon). Ten patients had standard adriamycin and mitomycin C monthly for 6 months, then discontinued when the course was completed. Twenty other patients had this regime, plus the addition of Wellferon given at 3 MU i.m

Type I interferons, which are mostly alpha-interferons (either as single agents or in combination with antiviral drugs), are currently the standard therapy for chronic viral hepatitis B, B/D, and C. Side-effects are not uncommon and include exacerbation of pre-existing autoimmune disorders or the de novo induction of autoimmunity. These adverse effects are attributed to the immunomodulatory properties of type I interferons, and should be distinguished from autoimmunity associated with chronic viral hepatitis in which interferon treatment may indeed be beneficial. The major autoimmune side-effe

We report a 42-year-old man who showed myoclonus in his right leg during alpha-interferon (alpha-IFN) treatment for HCV-RNA positive chronic hepatitis C. The myoclonus continuously persisted even during sleeping. Surface EMG recordings revealed fairly regular about 0.3 Hz periodic grouping discharges synchronized in the right lower extremities muscles. Jerk-locked back averaging method demonstrated a monophasic negative sharp wave associated with the myoclonus. This pre-myoclonus sharp wave was localized on the Cz and preceded the myoclonus by about 60 ms. T 2-weighted gradient-echo MRI images

Recombinant human interferon alpha (alpha IFN) is the only treatment with proven benefit for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Nevertheless its use in some susceptible individuals has led to the development or aggravation of different autoimmune conditions. We report the case of a 20 year old woman on peritoneal dialysis with chronic lobular hepatitis secondary to HCV infection who developed de novo psoriasis 9 months after starting treatment with alpha-IFN. In addition to psoriasis, alpha-IFN prescription was also concurrent with an unexpected and refractory secondary hyperparathyroi

Interferon (IFN)-alpha therapy was presented as a possible treatment for refractory immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). We used 3 x 10(6) U recombinant IFN alpha, subcutaneously three times a week, every other day, for a total of 12 doses, in five children with refractory ITP. Three patients showed no response and were classified with Type III. One patient gave a partial response, and the other one had been in remission for 71 weeks as of this writing. This is the longest remission period reported for IFN therapy. The patients were classified Types IIb and I, respectively. The therapy was w

A 34-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis C received interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy. Her thyroid function was normal and thyroid autoantibodies were negative before treatment. Four months after the beginning of the therapy she presented a clinical course of thyroiditis with a transient thyrotoxicosis. The diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis was confirmed by laboratory, ultrasonography, radioiodine scanning and fine needle aspiration findings. Thyroid autoantibodies were persisting negative. She suspended IFN-alpha therapy and she started non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and beta-blo…

The localization of the alpha-interferon receptor (alpha-IFNR) was examined in human brain tissues from neurologically normal, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebral infarction cases, using one antibody (IFNaR3) which preferentially recognizes alpha 2-IFN receptor and a second antibody (anti-p40) which recognizes the soluble alpha-IFN alpha/beta receptor. In all cases, microglial cells were stained with the antibodies. In infarct brains, macrophages were intensely labeled for alpha-IFNR. The anti-p40 antibody also showed capillary staining which might be due to residual blood plasma. On Western

Corneal neovascularization is a potentially blinding complication of a variety of corneal disorders. alpha-Interferon has been shown to inhibit endothelial cell migration and proliferation. It has been used successfully in the treatment of pediatric pulmonary hemangioma and hairy cell leukemia. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of topical and subcutaneous (s.c.) alpha-interferon on corneal neovascularization. Corneal neovascularization was induced in 40 male New Zealand white rabbits by placing silk sutures (7.0) bilaterally in each rabbit eye at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions of

Intraventricular interferon (IFN) administration has been shown to improve the course of SSPE. However, in 2 patients treated with intraventricular IFN-alpha-2a over a long period, we observed the appearance of clinical and EMG signs suggestive of upper and lower motor neuron pathology. These signs improved slightly in one patient after the discontinuation of IFN. It is suggested that this poly-peptide may act on specific kinds of nervous cells which selectively suffer together in various well-known neurological diseases.
