Effect of ascitic media formed by glycerin on the prevention of peritoneal adhesions.

AIM: We aimed to investigate whether or not artificial ascites media formed using glycerin are effective in the prevention of intraperitoneal adhesions. METHODS: Thirty-six Wistar albino male rats were used in the study. The rats were divided into 3 groups as follows. Group I: control group; group II (isotonic group): 3 ml of 0.9% NaCl was injected into the peritoneal cavity, and group III (glycerin group): 0.5 ml of liquid glycerin and 3 ml of 0.9% NaCl was injected into the peritoneal cavity. RESULTS: There were serious adhesions in the control group. Adhesion rates were lower in the isoto

Does saline resuscitation affect mechanisms of coagulopathy in critically ill trauma patients? An exploratory analysis.

Metabolic acidosis has been implicated in the development of coagulopathy, although the specific mechanisms have not been well characterized. We sought to explore whether resuscitation of injured patients with a balanced crystalloid solution affects coagulation, as measured by endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) and thromboelastography (TEG). We performed an exploratory analysis of a subset of subjects enrolled in a randomized trial comparing the effect of resuscitation with isotonic saline versus Plasma-Lyte A (PLA) on acidosis and electrolyte abnormalities. We collected plasma at admission a

Comparison of effects of isotonic sodium chloride with diltiazem in prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) significantly increases the morbidity and mortality of patients. The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the protective effects of isotonic sodium chloride with sodium bicarbonate infusion and isotonic sodium chloride infusion with diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker, in preventing CIN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study included patients who were administered 30-60 mL of iodinated contrast agent for percutaneous coronary angiography (PCAG), all with creatinine values between 1.1 and 3.1 mg/dL. Patients were divided int

A comparative histopathologic evaluation of the effects of three different solutions used for whole bowel irrigation: an experimental study.

PURPOSE: Although whole bowel irrigation (WBI) is a widely used method of bowel preparation in daily surgical practice, almost nothing is known about the histopathologic alterations caused by WBI and whether these differences have any detrimental effect on the outcome of gastrointestinal surgical procedures. Therefore, an experimental study has been conducted to evaluate and compare the effects of WBI with various solutions on the histology of gastrointestinal tract. METHODS: During the experimental procedures animals were divided into 4 groups consisting of 8 animals each as follows: group A

[Early and late damage in bypass vessels induced by crystalloid and cardioplegic solutions].

Veins and arteries grafted into the aorto-to-coronary position undergo degenerative processes, subintimal fibrous hyperplasia and diffuse atherosclerosis. We examined the influence of various crystalloid and cardioplegic solutions on the endothelium of human saphenous veins and internal mammary arteries, bovine internal mammary veins and arteries and rabbit carotid arteries, using light microscopy, TEM, SEM, immunological techniques and quantitative permeability measuring methods. Immersion or perfusion of vessel segments for various periods of time led to an ultrastructural endothelial cell d

Nasal saline irrigations for the symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The use of nasal irrigation for the treatment of nose and sinus complaints has its foundations in yogic and homeopathic traditions. There has been increasing use of saline irrigation, douches, sprays and rinsing as an adjunct to the medical management of chronic rhinosinusitis. Treatment strategies often include the use of topical saline from once to more than four times a day. Considerable patient effort is often involved. Any additional benefit has been difficult to discern from other treatments. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of topical saline in the manag

Intraoperative Fluids and Fluid Management for Ambulatory Dental Sedation and General Anesthesia.

Intravenous fluids are administered in virtually every parenteral sedation and general anesthetic. The purpose of this article is to review the physiology of body-water distribution and fluid dynamics at the vascular endothelium, evaluation of fluid status, calculation of fluid requirements, and the clinical rationale for the use of various crystalloid and colloid solutions. In the setting of elective dental outpatient procedures with minor blood loss, isotonic balanced crystalloid solutions are the fluids of choice. Colloids, on the other hand, have no use in outpatient sedation or general an

Stedim 6 and Clearflex, two new multilayer materials for infusion containers. Comparative study of their compatibility with five drugs versus glass flasks and polyvinyl chloride bags.

Stedim 6 and Clearflex, two new polyethylene-lined materials for infusion bags, were studied for their compatibility with disodium clodronate, chlorpromazine and maprotiline hydrochlorides, diazepam, and clorazepate dipotassium salt, comparatively with borosilicate glass flasks and polyvinyl chloride bags. Diazepam, the only drug to exhibit a marked sorption in PVC bags (the loss reached 25% of the initial concentration after a contact duration of 72 h), showed lower sorption in Stedim 6 bags (loss about 11% under the same conditions) and none in Clearflex bags. No significant difference was o

pH effect on the percutaneous penetration of lignocaine hydrochloride.

(1) The percutaneous penetration of lignocaine hydrochloride is affected in vitro by the pH; alkalinity increased the portion of the unionized drug which permeated through the lipoid outer skin membrane of guinea pigs. (2) The amount of lignocaine accumulated on the dermal side of the diffusion cell containing isotonic phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) was directly proportional to the initial concentration of the applied drug at the alkaline pH. (3) The dermal transfer rates of lignocaine into the isotonic phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) of the diffusion cell decreased with the increase in the pH of the ini

Myelographic localization of spinal cord compression in dogs. A comparison between cisternal and lumbar injections of metrizamide "Amipaque" in diagnosing and locating spinal cord compression.

Metrizamide is a new water-soluble contrast medium possessing unique properties, one of which is that even in an isotonic solution it has a radiographic density sufficient for a diagnostic myelogram. Whereas in the past myelography with water-soluble preparations invariably entailed lumbar injections, which are technically difficult in dogs, the fact that isotonic metrizamide causes so little tissue irritation has made it possible to inject the contrast solution into the cisterna magna. The author has compared metrizamide myelograms obtained with both cisternal and lumbar injections. Myelograp

Extracorporeal fluid removal in heart failure patients.

Ultrafiltration is the mechanical removal of fluid from the vasculature. Hydrostatic pressure is applied to blood across a semipermeable membrane to separate isotonic plasma water from blood. Because solutes in blood freely cross the semipermeable membrane, large amounts of fluid can be removed at the discretion of the treating physician without affecting any change in the serum concentration of electrolytes and other solutes. Ultrafiltration has been used to relieve congestion in patients with heart failure for almost four decades. In contrast to the adverse physiological consequences of loop

Effects of intravenous solutions on acid-base equilibrium: from crystalloids to colloids and blood components.

Intravenous fluid administration is a medical intervention performed worldwide on a daily basis. Nevertheless, only a few physicians are aware of the characteristics of intravenous fluids and their possible effects on plasma acid-base equilibrium. According to Stewart's theory, pH is independently regulated by three variables: partial pressure of carbon dioxide, strong ion difference (SID), and total amount of weak acids (ATOT). When fluids are infused, plasma SID and ATOT tend toward the SID and ATOT of the administered fluid. Depending on their composition, fluids can therefore lower, increa

Fluid therapy. Crystalloids and colloids.

Appropriate fluid therapy requires an understanding of fluid dynamics and pathologic alterations during various disease states. In addition, it requires an understanding of the pharmacologic differences of available fluids. Crystalloid fluids and colloid fluids can be used in combination to treat a variety of volume-deficient states. Synthetic colloids are also used to treat hyponcotic states. Blood products are used to replace blood components and coagulation proteins. Frequent monitoring and reassessment are required to prevent volume overload and life-threatening edema.

Fluid therapy and the resuscitation of traumatic shock.

Fluid management of the traumatized patient begins with assessment of volume status via palpation of pulses; evaluation of mental status; and measurement of urine output, arterial blood pressure, and central pressures. Intravascular line placement and choice of initial resuscitation fluids should be individualized to the clinical situation, although in most situations a crystalloid solution continues to be the initial fluid of choice. Following initial stabilization, the intravenous fluid administered can be tailored to a given situation, chosen only after the deranged fluid balance is sequent

Intraoperative isotonic balanced versus hypotonic crystalloids on postoperative sodium homeostasis in small children undergoing major neurosurgery: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Whether intraoperative isotonic balanced maintenance fluid is associated with less variation in sodium homeostasis in small children undergoing major neurosurgery remains unknown. METHODS: Patients aged up to 6 years undergoing major neurosurgery were randomly assigned to receive either isotonic balanced solution (IB) or 0.2% hypotonic solution (H) as intraoperative maintenance fluid. Serum electrolyte levels were measured from preoperative baseline to 6 d following surgery. RESULTS: Eighty patients were included in the primary analysis. Serum sodium change was significantly less

Acute hyponatremia after cardioplegia by histidine-tryptophane-ketoglutarate--a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder in hospitalized patients and is known to be associated with increased mortality. The administration of antegrade single-shot, up to two liters, histidine-tryptophane-ketoglutarate (HTK) solution for adequate electromechanical cardiac arrest and myocardial preservation during minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (MIAVR) is a standard procedure. We aimed to determine the impact of HTK infusion on electrolyte and acid-base balance. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis we reviewed data on patient characteristics, type of s
