INTRODUCTION: The thyroid cartilage, an androgen-sensitive structure, enlarges during puberty in individuals assigned male at birth, often resulting in a pronounced neck protuberance. This feature can exacerbate gender dysphoria in transfeminine patients. Chondrolaryngoplasty, commonly known as tracheal shave, is a procedure incorporated into facial feminization surgery (FFS) to address this issue. This study reports on the implementation of an endoscopic-assisted chondrolaryngoplasty technique, its safety, and the outcomes observed.
METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of ch

Management of the difficult airway remains one of the most relevant and challenging clinical situations encountered by anesthesiologists. Intubation with a video-laryngoscope is often difficult in patients with anterior airway even when the larynx is readily visualized. This has led to the combined use of a video-laryngoscope together with a flexible bronchoscope for endotracheal intubation. The disposable flexible bronchoscopes that are currently available on the market however are not rigid enough to reliably guide the endotracheal tube into the larynx. A new steerable intubation guide is no

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the changing trends of gray and texture values of laryngoscopic images in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and non-LPR.
METHODS: A total of 3428 laryngoscopic images were selected and divided into two groups, non-LPR and LPR groups based on the reflux symptom index. Gray histogram and gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) were used to quantify gray and texture features, and the model was trained based on these features. The total laryngoscopic images dataset was proportionally split into two parts including the training set and the test set

BACKGROUND: In-office culture of the larynx using a flexible laryngoscope tip can help identify laryngeal pathogens in cases of laryngitis.
OBJECTIVE: This retrospective case series aimed to investigate the feasibility of in-office laryngoscope tip culture to identify laryngeal pathogens and help guide medical treatment.
METHODS: This case series consists of 8 patients who underwent 11 in-office laryngeal cultures using the tip of the flexible laryngoscope. Concurrent nasal cultures were performed on two patients to assess for possible nasal contamination of these laryngoscope tip cultures.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngoscopes and subglottiscopes of multiple shapes and lengths are used in airway surgery to maintain an open airway; protect the trachea; and provide a place to mount the light, evacuator, and ventilation needle. Despite differences in scopes and ventilation needle mounting positions, the same jet pressures are typically used. We hypothesized that different scopes and scope configurations would affect distal airway pressure magnitude and homogeneity.
STUDY DESIGN: A laboratory investigation of distal airway pressures in a lung modelduring low frequency jet ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Perception of halitosis in patients during intubation is a common and additional stressor for anaesthesiologists and may lead to potential health risks.
OBJECTIVES: We hypothesised that intubation with videolaryngoscopy could help reduce the anaesthesiologists' perception of patients' oral malodor during intubation.
DESIGN: A single-blinded, randomised controlled trial.
SETTING: Single centre general hospital, Guangdong Province, China.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 440 patients who underwent intubation under general anaesthesia for elective surgery, aged 18 to 60 years old, America

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we compared the laryngoscopic view depending on the size of the Macintosh curved blade in edentulous patients.
METHODS: Thirty-five edentulous adult patients scheduled for elective surgery were included in the study. After induction of anesthesia, two direct laryngoscopies were performed alternately using a standard-sized Macintosh curved blade (No. 4 for men and No. 3 for women) and smaller-sized Macintosh curved blade (No. 3 for men and No. 2 for women). During direct laryngoscopy with each blade, two digital photographs of the lateral view were taken when t

An eleven-year-old child presented with a history of gradually increasing left side neck swelling and snoring for the last 6 years. He was initially scheduled for biopsy and on a second occasion for transcervical excision of left parapharyngeal mass under general anesthesia. Examination showed a left lateral pharyngeal and tonsillar mass compressing the oropharyngeal airway. CT neck showed a soft tissue mass (7 × 6 × 9 cm) in the left retropharyngeal space causing a bulge in the oropharynx with lateral deviation of carotid artery and internal jugular vein. During the first anesthesia for the b

STUDY BACKGROUND: Patients who experience a recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (RLI) after undergoing an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) procedure may eventually become asymptomatic. If patients with an asymptomatic vocal cord abnormality undergo a subsequent ACDF they may be at risk for developing bilateral vocal cord paralysis (VCP). Bilateral VCP is a potentially life threatening problem, requiring emergent tracheotomy in some cases. A program of referring patients for preoperative laryngoscopic examinations (PLE) who were being considered for a revision ACDF was instituted. Th

PURPOSE: The standard lengthy surgical incision used for basilic vein arteriovenous fistula (AVF) transposition is associated with significant discomfort, scarring and risk of wound complications. Minimally invasive vein dissection using a laryngoscope is an inexpensive alternative which has been successfully used for saphenous vein harvesting and which we have applied to the basilic vein for laryngoscopic-assisted AVF transposition (L-AVF/T).
METHODS: During this technique, the basilic vein is mobilized through two small incisions, one in the axilla and the second just proximal to the cubita

OBJECTIVES: The optical Airtraq laryngoscope (Prodol Meditec, Vizcaya, Spain) has been shown to have advantages when compared with direct laryngoscopy in difficult airway patients. Furthermore, it has been suggested that it is easy to use and handle even for inexperienced advanced life support providers. As such, we sought to assess whether the Airtraq may be a reliable alternative to conventional intubation when used in the prehospital setting.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: Prospective, randomized control trial in emergency patients requiring endotracheal intubation provided by anesthesiolo
