Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary neoplasm that constitutes approximately 17% of primary salivary gland malignancies. In the head and neck region, the parotid gland is the predominant site of origin and women are usually more frequently diagnosed than men. Previous radiation exposure and familial predisposition are some of the risk factors for ACC. A slowly enlarging mass lesion in the tail of the parotid gland is the most frequent presentation. The diagnosis is usually confirmed with a fine needle aspiration biopsy, and surgical excision is the main treatment of th

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is an unusual neoplasm of mesenchymal derivation, which is uncommon in the head and neck sites. In the parotid gland, it is most likely to be misdiagnosed as a myoepithelial, primary mesenchymal, or metastatic neoplasm.
METHODS: We report a case of synovial sarcoma in a young woman who was seen with temporomandibular joint symptoms with a 10-year history. A review of the literature was undertaken to highlight the radiologic and histologic features that help in diagnosis as well as the suggested therapeutic protocols most likely to ensure better survival.

Most salivary gland neoplasms are of epithelial origin. Sarcomas of the parotid gland, including leiomyosarcoma, are exceedingly rare mesenchymal tumours. A definitive diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma is challenging on cytomorphology alone. We herein describe a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented with parotid gland swelling. The patient was previously diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma of the parotid gland on histopathology. Fine needle aspiration cytology was done from this recurrent swelling. Cytomorphology combined with cell block immunocytochemistry was fruitful in confirming the tumour recurr

Malignant neoplasms of salivary gland neoplasms are rare and often involve the parotid gland. The primary treatment of these malignancies is surgery with or without adjuvant therapy. Chemotherapy or systemic therapy is indicated in recurrent or metastatic disease where surgery or radiotherapy is not possible. Salivary gland carcinomas, which are human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive, show an aggressive behaviour with a poor prognosis. Targeting the HER2 pathway with drugs designed to block this pathway is an interesting novel therapy to treat salivary gland carcinomas. We re

OBJECTIVES: Patients who survive malignant tumours have an increased risk of second neoplasms, including those of the salivary glands. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland is by far the most common type of second salivary gland tumour; other types have rarely been reported. We describe here two patients with a second tumour of the salivary glands.
CASE REPORTS: The first patient was a 22-year-old woman with a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, which developed 21 years after completion of chemoradiotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The second patient was

Malignant tumors of the salivary gland ducts exhibit variable morphological patterns and biological behavior. This group of neoplasms includes some uncommon lesions that originate from the intercalated ducts, such as polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma and basal cell adenocarcinoma, and other that arise from the excretory duct, such as the salivary duct carcinoma. One hundred and seventy-seven malignant neoplasms of the major and minor salivary glands were reviewed. There were 23 cases of uncommon types of ductal carcinomas. Age, sex, location, size of tum

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland pathologies requiring resection present with varying effects on surrounding tissue architecture, and we hypothesize that this spectrum of indications confers different risks of adverse events. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the complication profiles of parotidectomy in children across a spectrum of pathologies requiring parotid resection.
METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric data set was queried for parotidectomies performed from 2012 through 2017. Indications were subclassified based on Internat

Tumors of the submandibular gland typically arise from the seromucinous acini, which make up the majority of the gland. The most common benign tumor of this structure is the pleomorphic adenoma, whereas the most common malignancy of the submandibular gland is adenoid cystic carcinoma. We describe an unusual case of a neoplastic process of the myoepithelial cells of the submandibular gland in a middle-aged woman. This rare tumor is most commonly diagnosed in the parotid gland and in the minor salivary glands of the hard palate; a review of the literature uncovered only 5 previous reports of myo

The salivary gland tumors are rare entities and the majority of these are benign. However, there are some entities such as prior neck radiation, certain infections, and systemic diseases which should raise the clinical suspicion for a malignant lesion. Patients with Sjogren syndrome are at increased risk for a salivary gland neoplasm, specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma. While clinical findings play an important role in the initial workup, imaging plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management. This case describes a patient with Sjogren syndrome who presented with a left face mass where i

Basal Cell Adenoma (BCA) known as monomorphic adenoma is a rare type of benign epithelial salivary neoplasm that mostly occurs in the parotid gland. Clinically BCA appears as a firm, mobile, slow-growing mass and is usually diagnosed during the histopathological examination of the resected surgical specimen. Histological differential diagnosis ranges from benign to malignant neoplasms such as pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and basaloid squamous cell carcinoma. The treatment of BCA is surgical excision, due to its varied prognosis with the different his

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid is an uncommon, aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. The diagnosis is made after excluding metastasis from other sites in the head and neck or other primary malignancies of the parotid.
METHODS: Tumor registry data from 1974 to 1994 were reviewed at three University of Louisville-affiliated hospitals. Of 370 parotid tumors, 40 (11%) were initially classified as squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid. Chart review and histological specimen re-examination were conducted to confirm diagnosis.
RESULTS: Only 8 (2%) of the 370 case

The proper ablation of any neoplasm of the head and neck requires the inclusion of linear and anatomic barrier margins surrounding the neoplasm. Extirpative surgery of the major and minor salivary glands is certainly no exception to this surgical principle. To this end, the selection and execution of the most appropriate ablative surgical procedure for a major or minor benign salivary gland neoplasm is an essential exercise in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Of equal importance is the intraoperative identification and preservation of the pseudocapsule surrounding the benign neoplasm. This arti

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that usually develops in the pleura and peritoneum. The head and neck region is involved in only 6% of the cases. Involvement of the parotid gland is a rare phenomenon, with only 24 cases reported in the literature. The aim of this study is to report an additional case of SFT affecting the parotid gland, and to review the literature on previously reported cases. The patient was a 42-year-old male with a 4-cm, fibro-elastic, movable, painless nodule in the inferior lobe of the parotid gland. The lesion was surgically excised and, foll

OBJECTIVE: Facial nerve preservation and oncological safety are crucial in surgery of parotid tumors. An unexpected histopathologic diagnosis of a malignant parotid tumor, however, may unfavorably require a second, more radical surgery. The aim of this study was to find out whether the assessment of serological tumor markers in parotid saliva might have some diagnostic significance in the preoperative differentiation between benign and malignant parotid lesions. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, PATIENTS, AND METHODS: In a prospective pilot study performed at a university medical center in 28 patients wi

Primary adenocarcinomas of the parotid gland are rare, accounting for < 5% of all head and neck malignant neoplasms. The biological behaviour of these tumours varies considerably. Low-grade tumours are minimally invasive, whereas high-grade tumours show a high incidence of local recurrence and distant metastases. We report a case of metastatic parotid adenocarcinoma which presented with cutaneous features. This case illustrates that such salivary gland malignancies can very rarely present to the dermatologist. These potentially aggressive tumours require prompt diagnosis and management with mu

PURPOSE: Metastasising pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) is a rare malignant tumour that can affect multiple organs with a considerable time latency compared to primary pleomorphic adenoma (PA). To date, MPA and its clinical course, including survival and relapse rates, are still poorly understood.
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The research was carried out using the PUBMED database and the following search terms: ((Metastatic) OR (metastases) OR (metastasis) OR (metastasizing)) AND (pleomorphic adenoma). OBJECTIVES: Keratocystoma is a rare benign neoplasm of the parotid gland, histologically characterized by multicystic keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. Due to its resemblance to squamous malignancies, it represents a diagnostic challenge. This systematic review aims to summarize all published cases of parotid gland keratocystoma and to integrate one newly identified case in order to define its clinicopathologic features and clinical outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic literature search of PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted without date restrictions in accordance with PRISMA 2020 g

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a benign inflammatory lesion involving most frequently the minor salivary gland of the hard palate. Involvement of the parotid gland is rare, involvement of the parotid gland associated with facial palsy is exceptional.
CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old male patient with Marfan syndrome presented with swelling and inflammation of the left parotid gland associated with progressively complete facial nerve paralysis. CT scan and MRI showed a parotid collection with hyper signal of the nearest tissues associated with erosion of the styloid process. A malignan

INTRODUCTION: Benign sebaceous salivary gland (SG) neoplasms represent approximately 0.2% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Not only are fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy findings of sebaceous adenoma (SA) and sebaceous lymphadenoma (SLA) limited, but their findings are also rarely compared with one another.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our cytopathology files were searched for examples of benign sebaceous SG neoplasms with concomitant histopathological verification. FNA biopsy and cell collection were performed using standard technique.
RESULTS: One case each of parotid SA and parotid SLA showed

Salivary gland sarcomas are rare neoplasms, with the parotid gland being the most frequent site of involvement. Among these, fibrosarcoma represents an exceptional variant. Its diagnosis is primarily through histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis. Its presentation in the parotid gland is rare, and the occurrence of the infantile-juvenile subtype in an adult patient has not been previously described. In this clinical setting, we report the case of a 29-year-old man presenting with a rapidly growing right preauricular mass and ipsilateral facial paresis. Computed tomography revealed
