TMS over right posterior parietal cortex induces neglect in a scene-based frame of reference.

Although damage to right posterior parietal cortex (RPPC) produces bias in line bisection, Karnath et al. [Karnath, H.-O., Berger, M. F., Küker, W., & Rorden, C. (2004). We used a detection task (approximating cancellation in requiring detection) to investigate this claim by compromising the parietal cortex with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Effect of stimulus duration on estimates of human cochlear tuning.

Auditory masking methods originally employed to assess behavioral frequency selectivity have evolved over the years to infer cochlear tuning. Behavioral forward masking thresholds for spectrally notched noise maskers and a fixed, low-level probe tone provide accurate estimates of cochlear tuning. Here, we use this method to investigate the effect of stimulus duration on human cochlear tuning at 500 Hz and 4 kHz. Probes were 20-ms sinusoids at 10 dB sensation level. Maskers were noises with a spectral notch symmetrically and asymmetrically placed around the probe frequency. For seven participan

Deficient central mechanisms in tinnitus: Exploring the impact on speech comprehension and executive functions.

Many individuals with chronic subjective tinnitus report significant problems in comprehending speech in adverse listening situations. A large body of studies has provided evidence to support the notion that deficits in speech-in-noise (SIN) are prevalent in the tinnitus population, while some studies have challenged these findings. Elemental auditory perception is usually only minimally or not impaired. In addition, deficits in cognitive functions, particularly executive functions, have also been observed in individuals with tinnitus. Given these previous findings, we theorize that deficient

Abnormal basic visual processing functions in binocular fusion disorders.

Heterophoria is a common type of binocular fusion disorder that consists of a latent eye misalignment with potential consequences on daily activities such as reading or working on a computer (with CVS). Crowding, a type of contextual modulation, can also impair reading. Our recent studies found an abnormal pattern of low-level visual processing with larger perceptive fields (PF) in heterophoria. The PF is the fundamental processing unit of human vision and both masking and crowding depend on its size. We investigated how heterophoria would impact the PF's size via a lateral masking experiment

Relations between speech-reception, psychophysical temporal processing, and subcortical electrophysiological measures of auditory function in humans.

There is a large amount of variability in performance in masked-speech reception tasks, as well as in psychophysical auditory temporal processing tasks, between listeners with normal or relatively normal low-frequency hearing. In this study we used a cross-sectional dataset collected on 102 listeners (34 young, 34 middle-aged, 34 older) to assess whether variance in these tasks could be explained by variance in subcortical electrophysiological measures of auditory function (auditory brainstem responses and frequency following responses), and whether variance in speech-reception performance cou

Forward masking enhances the auditory brainstem response in the free-tailed bat, Tadarida brasiliensis, during a critical time window for sonar reception.

Forward masking is a widespread auditory phenomenon in which the response to one sound transiently reduces the response to a succeeding sound. This study used auditory brainstem responses to measure temporal masking effects in the free-tailed bat, Tadarida brasiliensis. A digital subtraction protocol was used to isolate responses to the second of a pair of pulses varying in interval, revealing a suppression phase lasting <4 ms followed by an enhancement phase lasting 4-15 ms during which the ABR waveform was amplified up to 100%. The results suggest echolocating bats possess adaptations for en

Contribution of Cochlear Compression to Discrimination of Rippled Spectra in On- and Low-frequency Noise.

The goal of the study was to assess cochlear compression when rippled-spectrum signals are perceived in noise assuming that the noise might produce both masking and confounding effects. In normal listeners, discrimination between rippled signals with and without ripple phase reversals was assessed in background noise. The signals were band-limited (0.5 oct at a - 6-dB level) rippled noise centered at 2 kHz, with a ripple density of 3.5 oct-1. The noise (masker) was band-limited nonrippled noise centered at either 2 kHz (on-frequency masker) or 1 kHz (low-frequency masker). The masker was simul

The effects of click and masker spectrum on the auditory brainstem response of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Two experiments were performed that investigated the effects of (1) click level and (2) continuous broadband noise on the binaural auditory brainstem response (ABR) of normal-hearing and hearing-impaired bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). In addition to spectrally uncompensated clicks and noise, stimuli were digitally compensated to achieve "white" spectra (flat spectral density level) or "pink" spectra (spectral density level rolling off at -3 dB/octave). For experiment 1, in all spectral conditions, ABR peak latencies increased and peak amplitudes decreased with decreasing click level

Motion dominance in binocular rivalry depends on extraretinal motions.

In binocular rivalry, moving stimulus is dominant over stationary stimulus. This is called motion dominance. The motion here is usually a motion defined on the retina (retinal motion). However, motion can be defined in several different coordinates. It can be defined with respect to objects in the background (object-based motion) or to observers' head or body (spatiotopic motion), as well as to the retinal coordinate. In this study, we examined the role of motions defined by these three coordinates. A dichoptic pair of gratings was presented to create a binocular rivalry, one of which was movi

The effects of distractors in multiple object tracking are modulated by the similarity of distractor and target features.

Is the effect of distractors in multiple object tracking dependent on the distractors sharing the features of the targets? In experiment 1, observers tracked five targets among five distractors that were identical to the targets and a number of additional distractors that were either identical to or featurally distinct from the targets. Results showed that distractors that are distinct from the targets in shape or color, or are stationary, impair tracking less than distractors that are identical to the targets. However, tracking performance declined as the number of distractors increased, even

A computational model of human auditory signal processing and perception.

A model of computational auditory signal-processing and perception that accounts for various aspects of simultaneous and nonsimultaneous masking in human listeners is presented. The model is based on the modulation filterbank model described by Dau et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 102, 2892 (1997)] but includes major changes at the peripheral and more central stages of processing. The model contains outer- and middle-ear transformations, a nonlinear basilar-membrane processing stage, a hair-cell transduction stage, a squaring expansion, an adaptation stage, a 150-Hz lowpass modulation filter, a ban

Comodulation masking release (CMR) in children and the influence of reading status.

PURPOSE: Research suggests that children with reading disabilities (RD) have difficulty processing temporal and spectral components of sounds. Comodulation masking release (CMR) measures a listener's ability to use temporal and spectral information in noise to identify a signal. The purpose of this study was to determine whether children with RD had difficulty identifying a signal in CMR stimuli. Child and adult performance was compared to assess the development of CMR. METHOD: Eighty-one 7- to 10-year-old children (30 with and 51 without RD) and 20 adults without RD listened to CMR stimuli t

The effects of different aperture-viewing conditions on the recognition of novel objects.

The process of learning the structure of novel objects involves the selective use of information available in the distal stimulus. By allowing participants to explore the object within a limited field of view, we were able to examine more rigorously what regions of the object are actually selected in the learning process. Participants explored objects either by moving a circular aperture over a stationary novel object (the aperture-movement condition), or by moving the object behind a stationary aperture (the object-movement condition). Given the differences in how the spatial layout of object

Is there a relationship between speech and nonspeech auditory processing in children with dyslexia?

A group of 8 young teenagers with dyslexia were compared to age-matched control participants on a number of speech and nonspeech auditory tasks. There were no differences between the control participants and the teenagers with dyslexia in forward and simultaneous masking, nor were there any differences in frequency selectivity as indexed by performance with a bandstop noise. Thresholds for backward masking in a broadband noise were elevated for the teenagers with dyslexia as a group. If this deficit in backward masking had an influence on speech perception, we might expect the perception of "b

Interocular suppression in cat striate cortex is not orientation selective.

For the majority of neurones in cat striate cortex, the response to an optimal stimulus presented to one eye is suppressed when a stimulus of substantially different orientation is presented to the other eye. In order to determine the true orientational tuning of the underlying inhibitory interactions in the absence of binocular facilitation for matched stimuli, we tested how the response of such cells to an optimal grating in one eye is affected by gratings in the other eye of spatial frequencies too high or low to elicit an excitatory response through either eye: the vast majority of cells d

Masker interaural phase and the MLD: effects of conductive hearing loss.

Sensitivity to binaural signals that were interaurally antiphasic with respect to the masking noise was examined as a function of the interaural phase of the masking noise, for listeners with normal hearing, and listeners with conductive hearing losses. Some of the hearing-impaired listeners were tested both before and after middle ear surgery. In agreement with previous findings, the normal-hearing listeners showed the lowest thresholds when the masking noise had no interaural phase shift, with thresholds increasing monotonically as the interaural phase of the center frequency of the masker a

Masking and pitch shift of tone bursts and clicks by low-frequency tones.

From experiments in animals and investigations in humans it is known that the normally phase-dependent masking of a short stimulus by a low-frequency continuous tone does not occur in the case of endolymphatic hydrops. The recording of the masked threshold of short tone stimuli in a loud tone of 30 Hz is to be evaluated for the clinical diagnostics of Ménière's disease. To this purpose, the main parameters of the measurements (type, frequency, duration of the stimulus, and intensity of the masker) and their effect of phase-dependent masking and pitch-shift are investigated. Stimuli above 2 kHz

Effect of a phase advance of the light/dark cycle on pineal function and circadian running activity in individual rats.

Circadian rhythms of urinary 6-sulphatoxy-melatonin excretion and spontaneous wheel-running activity were monitored in individual male Wistar albino and hooded rats entrained to a 12 h L:12 h D photoperiod, before and after an 8 h phase advance of the light cycle. The pigmented hooded strain commenced melatonin metabolite excretion 2 h after darkness, whereas the albino rats did not excrete detectable amounts until 4 h of darkness had elapsed (p < 0.05). There was no correlation between the time of onset of spontaneous wheel-running activity and the onset of excretion of 6-sulphatoxymelatonin
