Stress distribution in maxillary first molar periodontium using straight pull headgear with vertical and horizontal tubes: A finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: One of the most effective ways for distal movement of molars to treat Class II malocclusion is using extraoral force through a headgear device. The purpose of this study was the comparison of stress distribution in maxillary first molar periodontium using straight pull headgear in vertical and horizontal tubes through finite element method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the real geometry model, a basic model of the first molar and maxillary bone was obtained using three-dimensional imaging of the skull. After the geometric modeling of periodontium components through CATIA softwa

The periodontium of periodontitis patients contains citrullinated proteins which may play a role in ACPA (anti-citrullinated protein antibody) formation.

AIM: To determine the presence and location (stroma versus epithelium) of citrullinated proteins in periodontitis tissue as compared to non-periodontitis tissue and synovial tissue of RA patients. MATERIALS & METHODS: Periodontitis, healthy periodontal and RA-affected synovial tissue samples were collected in addition to buccal swabs. These samples were stained for the presence of citrullinated proteins using polyclonal (Ab5612) and monoclonal (F95) antibodies. Furthermore, Western blotting with F95 was performed on lysates prepared from periodontal and synovial tissues. RESULTS: In periodon

Salivary fructosamine in diabetic and non-diabetic individuals with healthy and diseased periodontium and its changes after non-surgical periodontal therapy.

AIMS: A bidirectional relationship has been reported between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis. The present study aimed to estimate salivary fructosamine in diabetic and non-diabetic individuals with healthy and diseased periodontium and to measure its changes after non-surgical periodontal therapy. Another aim was to identify the cut-off value of salivary fructosamine to diagnose diabetes mellitus and to correlate it with glycated hemoglobin. METHODS: Salivary fructosamine and HbA1c were assessed in periodontally healthy individuals and periodontitis patients (n = 60 in each group). Both g

[Identification of key markers of normal and pathogenic microbiota determining health of periodontium by NGS-sequencing 16S-rDNA libraries of periodontal swabs].

By using NGS-sequencing libraries of DNA from periodontal swabs with primers specific to V6 region of 16S rDNA prevalence of bacterial genera and species in periodontal microbiota of patients with aggressive periodontitis and healthy donors was analyzed. Six genera of putative periodontal protectors and eight periodontal pathogens were identified with respect to aggressive (but not chronic) periodontitis. Statistically relevant over-colonization by general Porphyromonas, Treponema, Synergistes, Tannerella, Filifactor, Ruminococcus, Parvimonas and Mycoplasma was found to be associated with the

Palaeohistology reveals an unusual periodontium and tooth implantation in a filter-feeding pterodactyloid pterosaur, Pterodaustro guinazui, from the Lower Cretaceous of Argentina.

Pterosaurs are an extinct group of Mesozoic flying reptiles, which exhibited high diversity with regard to their dentition. Although morphological features of pterosaur dentition have been described in detail in several contributions, the histology of tooth and tooth attachment tissues (i.e. periodontium) has been scarcely analysed to date for this clade. Here we describe and interpret the microstructure of the tooth and periodontium attachment tissues of Pterodaustro guinazui, a filter-feeding pterodactyloid pterosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of Argentina. The histological analysis of the lo

Apical periodontium response to enamel matrix derivative as an intracanal medication in rat immature teeth with pulp necrosis: radiographic and histologic findings.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the enamel matrix derivative (EMD) biomaterial in nonvital immature teeth. METHODS: To arrest root development, pulpectomies were performed in the lower first molars of 36 4-week-old rats; the cavities were left exposed to the oral environment for 3 weeks. Then, chemical disinfection was performed, and triple antibiotic paste (TAP) or EMD was applied in the root canals. A control group did not receive any treatment. Radiographic and histological data were evaluated after 3 and 6 weeks. RESULTS: At 3 weeks, TAP promoted a milder inflammatory

Evaluation of Knowledge and Attitude Among General Dental Practitioners Towards the Impact of Psychological Factors Affecting Periodontium: A Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Survey.

Background Periodontal disease is a multifactorial inflammatory condition influenced not only by microbial plaque but also by systemic, environmental, behavioral, and psychological factors. Psychological conditions, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, may contribute to periodontal disease progression through altered immune responses, increased inflammatory mediators, poor oral hygiene practices, smoking, and decreased compliance with dental treatment. General dental practitioners (GDPs) are often the first healthcare professionals to identify oral manifestations associated with psychologi

Free amino-acid composition of wax-stimulated whole saliva in human subjects with healthy periodontium, severe chronic periodontitis and post-juvenile periodontitis.

The free amino-acid composition of wax-stimulated whole saliva of 3 subjects with different periodontal status was determined. The amino acids were analysed by gas chromatographic separation on a packed column and determined as their N-heptafluorobutyrylisobutyl esters. In 2 patients with periodontal diseases, the salivary concentrations of proline and glycine were significantly elevated, suggesting increased collagen and protein degradation and their increased release from the inflamed gingiva. delta-Amino-n-valeric acid is related to bacterial metabolism so that the changes found in its conc

Estimation and comparison of osteopontin levels in plasma in subjects with healthy periodontium and generalized chronic periodontitis and its assessment after scaling and root planing.

BACKGROUND: Osteopontin (OPN) is a bone matrix derivative, whose levels reflect active lesions of aggravated periodontal disease accompanied by alveolar bone resorption. OPN is also a component of human atherosclerotic plaque, suggesting a role of OPN in cardiovascular diseases. The present study was conducted to assess and compare plasma OPN levels in subjects with healthy periodontium and generalized chronic periodontitis and to evaluate the effect of scaling and root planing on Plasma OPN levels of generalized chronic periodontitis subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 gender matched subject

Assessment of the Maximum Amount of Orthodontic Force for Dental Pulp and Apical Neuro-Vascular Bundle in Intact and Reduced Periodontium on Bicuspids (Part II).

This study examines 0.6 N-4.8 N as the maximum orthodontic force to be applied to dental pulp and apical NVB on intact and 1-8 mm reduced periodontal-ligament (PDL), in connection with movement and ischemic, necrotic and resorptive risk. In addition, it examines whether the Tresca finite-element-analysis (FEA) criterion is more adequate for the examination of dental pulp and its apical NVB. Eighty-one (nine patients, with nine models for each patient) anatomically correct models of the periodontium, with the second lower-premolar reconstructed with its apical NVB and dental pulp were assembled

Hyperbrachycephaly, short face, midface hypoplasia, fusion of cervical vertebrae, radiolucent bone defects, and severe destruction of periodontium--a new syndrome: craniofaciocervical osteoglyphic dysplasia.

A patient with an unusual combination of findings, which do not fit in any of the known syndromes, is presented. The patient, a 24.5-year-old male of normal growth and intelligence, manifests craniofacial dysmorphism, radiolucencies in the skull and in the cervical vertebrae, progressive alveolar bone loss and fusion of cervical vertebrae. The young man does not exhibit any other systemic, hematological, biochemical, chromosomal or immunological abnormality, except for IgA deficiency.

Changes in clinical and microbiological parameters of the periodontium during initial stages of orthodontic movement in patients with treated severe periodontitis: A longitudinal site-level analysis.

Applying orthodontic braces makes oral hygiene difficult and increases plaque accumulation, frequently resulting in gingival inflammation. In patients with previous severe periodontitis, this inflammation overlaps with the pre-existing inflammatory challenge and can lead to further progression of periodontal attachment loss. The aim of this study was to assess longitudinal site-level changes as mirrored by clinical and microbiological parameters during the initial remodeling of alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament, produced as an effect of light orthodontic forces in adult patients with

Loss of attachment in the marginal periodontium of the rat incisor under non-inflammatory conditions. Expression of alkaline phosphatase activity. Experimental Oral Biology Group.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) has been suggested to play a role in acellular cementum formation and maintenance of periodontal attachment. In an attempt to determine whether changes in attachment level are associated with altered expression of ALP-activity in the periodontium we induced natural loss of attachment in rats by pinning the lower incisor to the jaw bone. Previous studies have shown that this procedure results in regressive changes in the marginal periodontium without any inflammatory response. Six months after blockage of eruption the attachment level on the experimental (right) side

Exosomes derived from 3D-cultured MSCs improve therapeutic effects in periodontitis and experimental colitis and restore the Th17 cell/Treg balance in inflamed periodontium.

Although mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-exos) have been shown to have therapeutic effects in experimental periodontitis, their drawbacks, such as low yield and limited efficacy, have hampered their clinical application. These drawbacks can be largely reduced by replacing the traditional 2D culture system with a 3D system. However, the potential function of MSC-exos produced by 3D culture (3D-exos) in periodontitis remains elusive. This study showed that compared with MSC-exos generated via 2D culture (2D-exos), 3D-exos showed enhanced anti-inflammatory effects in a ligature-induce

Evaluation of Gingival Crevicular Fluid and Serum Tartrate-resistant Acid Phosphatase Levels in Subjects with Clinically Healthy Periodontium and Chronic Periodontitis - A Clinico-biochemical Study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with conglomerate etiology making it difficult to diagnose at the early stages. Potential biomarkers in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) would determine the presence of the current disease activity, predict sites vulnerable for future breakdown, and assess the response to periodontal interventions. Merely elevated levels of inflammatory soft-tissue markers do not indicate bone destruction. Since there is no single ideal biomarker established, bone-related biomarkers such as telopeptide of type I collagen, osteocalcin, calprotectin, ost

Elevated serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) in solid-organ transplant recipients is positively associated with tissue destruction and IL-6 gene expression in the periodontium.

BACKGROUND: The number of transplanted solid organs and life expectancy after transplantation are steadily rising worldwide. Inflammation is widely recognized as playing a pivotal role in transplant rejection, and several studies have shown that serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels can identify individuals who are at greater risk for rejection. Given the known association between IL-6 and chronic periodontitis, the aim of our study was to assess the periodontal status of solid-organ transplant subjects compared to systemically healthy controls, to quantify the IL-6 levels in the serum and periodo

The Effect of Corticotomy-Assisted Orthodontic Therapy (CAOT) or Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) on Bone Remodeling and the Health of Periodontium: A Systematic Review of Systematic Reviews.

Background: Orthodontic treatment involves moving teeth within the alveolar ridge. Bone remodeling is associated with the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Procedures such as corticotomy-assisted orthodontic therapy (CAOT) or periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) are intended to reduce bone density and negative stress on the grip side and therefore limit bone resorption during orthodontic movement or add bone substitute material so that the tooth does not cross the vestibular plate. Methods: The study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting It
