BACKGROUND: Traditional definitions of sarcopenia have described an aging-associated disorder roughly defined as muscle mass two standard deviations below the young adult demographic. In an effort to clear the ambiguity pertaining to such descriptions, two international bodies have put forth working definitions of sarcopenia, namely The Society of Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders in 2011, and The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People in 2009.
REVIEW: This paper will look at the current zeitgeist of sarcopenia through a range of studies and will argue that what we have

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a geriatric muscle disease characterized by the loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical function. To better reflect the unique characteristics of sarcopenia in Korean older adults, the Korean Working Group on Sarcopenia (KWGS) developed a diagnostic algorithm, including a new category of "functional sarcopenia." This study aimed to establish evidence-based exercise guidelines tailored to the KWGS framework.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary expert committee conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2000 and 2024 to assess e

BACKGROUND: One of the most prevalent respiratory disorders in modern society is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Frequent comorbidities in patients with COPD are abnormal nutritional status and body composition variations. Malnutrition-sarcopenia syndrome, which occurs when the 2 conditions - malnutrition and sarcopenia - coexist, raises the risk of death more than either condition alone. The current study sought to determine the prevalence of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and malnutrition-sarcopenia syndrome in patients with COPD as well as the association between these diseases and

Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and function, has become a recognized disease entity with serious health implications. However, traditional diagnostic methods relying on handgrip strength, walking speed, and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry-based muscle mass assessment are limited by subjective components, irregular measurement intervals, and inability to capture muscle quality. This paper comprehensively reviews how digital biomarker technologies including smart watch, smart insoles, surface electromyography, and markerless motion analysis via OpenPose enable objec

INTRODUCTION: As the global population ages, sarcopenia is increasingly recognized for its severe consequences, including disability, falls, injuries, hospitalization, and even death. Despite its significance, research on predicting sarcopenia using machine learning is limited. This study aims to develop an effective machine learning model for sarcopenia prediction.
METHODS: Data from 1,441 participants were retrospectively reviewed from Kaohsiung Medical University-affiliated hospitals between 2022 and 2024. The dataset included demographics, lifestyle habits, medical history, and other rele

COPD is a complex disease with pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations intensively studied due to the numerous pathologic processes involved. Its prevalence is increasing, representing the fourth leading cause of mortality worldwide. Sarcopenia can occur in COPD patients with common risk factors. Sarcopenia is characterized by a decrease in muscle mass and function with consequences on muscle performance. Muscle changes can be measured by different methods: MRI, DXA, BIA, CT or biopsy. The prevalence of sarcopenia has been studied in numerous studies with varying results. This review ident

BACKGROUND: Aging leads to progressive motor system decline, which can result in sarcopenia, defined as the age-related loss of muscle mass and function. Architectural changes, epitomized by a decrease in fascicle length (Lf) and muscle thickness (MT), provide a useful signature of sarcopenia. Their ratio (Lf/MT), named ultrasound sarcopenia index (USI), is a new parameter proposed for evaluating changes in muscle geometric proportions associated with muscle atrophy but lacks application in a sarcopenic population. This study aimed to explore vastus lateralis USI in a sarcopenic population.

Sarcopenia, characterized by the progressive decline in muscle mass and function, is an important complication among patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Despite its prevalence, there is a notable lack of comprehensive research focused on early diagnosis or treatment target for sarcopenia in PD patients. This review explores the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and examines the potential role of various biomarkers related to muscle mass and function. These markers include myokines (cytokines produced by skeletal muscle) such as myostatin, follistatin, activin A, growth differentiation fa

Sarcopenia is a progressive, age-related condition characterized by the loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function. As Asia faces rapid population aging, sarcopenia has become an urgent public health concern. Over time, definitions and diagnostic criteria have evolved to emphasize muscle strength and physical performance rather than muscle mass alone. This review summarizes key updates in global and regional frameworks, including guidelines from the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019). However, these st

Sarcopenia is defined as a muscle-wasting syndrome that occurs with accelerated aging, while cachexia is a severe wasting syndrome associated with conditions such as cancer and immunodeficiency disorders, which cannot be fully addressed through conventional nutritional supplementation. Sarcopenia can be considered a component of cachexia, with the bidirectional interplay between adipose tissue and skeletal muscle potentially serving as a molecular mechanism for both conditions. However, the underlying mechanisms differ. Recognizing the interplay and distinctions between these disorders is esse
