Self-management with alcohol over lifespan: psychological mechanisms, neurobiological underpinnings, and risk assessment.

Self-management includes all behavioural measures and cognitive activities aimed at coping with challenges arising throughout the lifespan. While virtually all of these challenges can be met without pharmacological means, alcohol consumption has long been instrumentalized as a supporting tool to help coping with problems arising selectively at adolescence, adulthood, and ageing. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first systematic review of alcohol instrumentalization throughout lifespan. We searched MEDLINE, Google Scholar, PsycINFO and CINAHL (from Jan, 1990, to Dec, 2022) and analysed c

Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) Scores to Detect Self-Reported Dysphagia in Brazilians.

The Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) detects swallowing impairments (dysphagia) self-reported by patients according to their perception. This noninvasive, inexpensive, self-administered instrument is quickly and easily filled out. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the scores, sensitivity, and specificity of the method to define self-reported dysphagia in Brazilians. EAT-10 scores were evaluated in 443 healthy individuals (273 women and 170 men), aged 20 to 84 years, with no swallowing difficulties or diseases, and 72 patients with diseases that cause dysphagia (35 women and 37

Usefulness of Self-Assessment of Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Web-Based Study in Anhui, China.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal symptoms (GISs) are caused by a combination of biopsychosocial factors and are highly prevalent worldwide. Given their complex nature, coupled with ineffective communication of diagnoses by physicians, patients with intimate GISs often feel stigmatized. This, in turn, can inhibit their ability to express their thoughts and feelings adequately, leading them to over- or underreport their symptoms. Moreover, selective service-seeking for and reporting of GISs have a direct bearing on the stage of disease at presentation and, consequently, on the overall prognosis. OB

Self-assessment sheet submission rate predicts technique survival in patients initiating peritoneal dialysis.

AIM: Patients play a crucial role in preventing peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related events, including peritonitis and fluid overload, as PD procedures are mainly carried out at home. We asked patients to submit a PD self-assessment sheet at each outpatient visit in our daily clinical practice and evaluated its usefulness for outcomes in patients initiating PD. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent PD catheter insertion between January 2008 and October 2018. The submission rate of a PD self-assessment sheet was calculated from medical records until PD cessation

Assessment of Disease Progression in Friedreich Ataxia using an Instrumented Self Feeding Activity.

Friedreich ataxia (FRDA), the most common of the inherited ataxias, is a degenerative disease that progressively affects walking and other functions leading to significant impairment associated with a shortened lifespan. It is important to monitor the progression of ataxia over periods of time for clinical and therapeutic interventions. This study was aimed at investigating the use of our instrumented measurement scheme of utilizing a motion detecting spoon in a self-feeding activity to quantify the longitudinal effect of FRDA on upper limb function. Forty individuals diagnosed with FRDA (32.8

Clinical Insight Into Latent Variables of Psychiatric Questionnaires for Mood Symptom Self-Assessment.

BACKGROUND: We recently described a new questionnaire to monitor mood called mood zoom (MZ). MZ comprises 6 items assessing mood symptoms on a 7-point Likert scale; we had previously used standard principal component analysis (PCA) to tentatively understand its properties, but the presence of multiple nonzero loadings obstructed the interpretation of its latent variables. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to rigorously investigate the internal properties and latent variables of MZ using an algorithmic approach which may lead to more interpretable results than PCA. Additionally, we explored

A content validated questionnaire for assessment of self reported venous blood sampling practices.

BACKGROUND: Venous blood sampling is a common procedure in health care. It is strictly regulated by national and international guidelines. Deviations from guidelines due to human mistakes can cause patient harm. Validated questionnaires for health care personnel can be used to assess preventable "near misses"--i.e. potential errors and nonconformities during venous blood sampling practices that could transform into adverse events. However, no validated questionnaire that assesses nonconformities in venous blood sampling has previously been presented. The aim was to test a recently developed qu

Self-assessment of the cervical pupil sign as a new fertility-awareness method.

This pilot study investigates in a group of 20 healthy volunteers with regular cycles and prior experience in natural family planning methods whether self-assessment of the cervical "pupil sign" is feasible and can be used to detect the preovulatory fertile window. All participants were able to assess the cervical pupil sign. Based on this method, the fertile window lasts on average 3 days, which is significantly shorter and more consistent than when defined on basis of the vulvar mucus method.

The HCL-32: towards a self-assessment tool for hypomanic symptoms in outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorders (BP) are frequently diagnosed and treated as pure depression initially; accurate diagnosis often being delayed by 8 to 10 years. In prospective studies, the presence of hypomanic symptoms in adolescence is strongly predictive of later bipolar disorders. As such, an instrument for self-assessment of hypomanic symptoms might increase the detection of suspected and of manifest, but under-treated, cases of bipolar disorders. METHODS: The multi-lingual hypomania checklist (HCL-32) has been developed and is being tested internationally. This preliminary paper reports t

Self-Selected Goal Attainment Following Botulinum Toxin A Injections: Upper Limb Performance Assessment.

Challenges remain in measuring functional upper limb (UL) outcomes following Botulinum Toxin A (BTX-A) injections for muscle spasticity. Few measures exist to evaluate personally meaningful UL performance. The Upper Limb Performance Assessment (ULPA) is an observer-rated measure using patient-centred and selected tasks in real-world conditions. This multicentre, pre/post observational study examined the ULPA's ability to measure motor function of adults with UL spasticity following acquired brain injury on self-selected goals. The ULPA detected change in UL functional use for self-selected goa

Leveraging Self-Supervised Learning for Non-Invasive Intra-Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Oximetry Assessment.

Accurate measurement of intra-cardiac blood oxygen (O2) saturation is essential for cardiovascular assessment, yet current methods require invasive catheterization. T2-based cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) enables non-invasive O2 quantification, but deep learning automation is constrained by scarce annotated data. We propose a unified self-supervised learning (SSL) framework integrating cine CMRI and T2 oximetry CMRI to learn generalizable representations without labels. Our approach pre-trains ResNet and vision transformer encoders using contrastive learning and masked image modelin

Prospective Assessment of Cognitive Outcomes in Pediatric Self-Limited Epilepsy With Centrotemporal Spikes.

BACKGROUND: Self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS) is the most common focal epilepsy syndrome in childhood. Although its clinical course is generally benign, concerns remain regarding potential cognitive effects of both the disease and antiepileptic treatments. This study aimed to evaluate visuospatial abilities and cognitive perception in children newly diagnosed with SeLECTS and to compare the cognitive outcomes of levetiracetam and valproic acid monotherapy. METHODS: This prospective study included 64 children aged 5-10 years who were newly diagnosed with SeLECTS and in
