BACKGROUND: Adult rats undergo five distinct electrographic stages during status epilepticus (SE). Whether developing animals manifest those stages is not yet known.
GOALS: Determine in the kainic acid (KA) model: (1) the EEG stages of SE in P15 and P35 rats; (2) the relative susceptibilities of these two age groups to develop SE; and (3) the effect of phenobarbital on SE stages.

Complex partial status epilepticus (SE) has been reported rarely in children. We describe the clinical case of a 14 year-old girl with complex partial seizures (CPS) since age 10 who developed a complex partial SE probably because she was not adherent to treatment. The neurologic examination and computed tomography scan were normal. During the SE she received diazepam and phenytoin and became free of the seizures after 5 minutes. The ictal EEG showed spikes and slow waves over the right temporal region.

The hemostasis function was studied in 33 patients with epileptical seizures of a different etiology. The studies were conducted at the moment of the epileptical seizure or epileptical status and in the interattack period during hyperventilation. The concentration of products of blood fibrinogen degradation, the degree of platelet agregation, their number and prothrombine index were estimated. The data obtained were compared with those of normals. The results of the studies indicate the existence of the syndrome of intravascular coagulation during an epileptical seizure and epileptical status.

BACKGROUND: Management of refractory status epilepticus (SE) involves administration of intravenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA(A)) receptor agonists, such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or propofol. Borage oil is derived from the seeds of the borage plant (Borago officinalis) an abundant source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and Borage oil has been promoted as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, diabetic neuropathy, and menopause-related symptoms. Refractory status epilepticus (RSE) is an emergent and difficult neurologic problem that is not uncommon in clinical practice. In this report, we describe a 23-year-old man whose RSE was refractory to standard antiepileptic drugs and barbiturates; it was successfully terminated only with intravenous ketamine.
