[Salvage of exposed alloplastic materials in irradiated wounds - a case report].

BACKGROUND: Modern multimodal concepts of complex reconstructions and advanced wound management enlarge strategies for surgical oncological therapies. One of the mainstays of classical surgical therapy in case of exposed alloplastic materials in irradiated wounds was to remove the foreign body due to the risk of infection. This loss of integrity and function of the contaminated host bed was to allow wound healing and closure. METHOD: We report the management of a 56-year-old female patient who developed a lyomyosarcoma at her left shoulder girdle 8 years after radiation of the left thorax bec

Inhibitory effects of dietary Spirulina platensis on UVB-induced skin inflammatory responses and carcinogenesis.

Reactive oxygen species produced in response to UVR are important in skin tumor development. We have previously reported that deficiency of the Ogg1 gene, encoding the repair enzyme for 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoG), increases skin tumor incidence in mice upon repetitive UVB exposure and modulation of UVB-induced inflammatory response. Spirulina platensis is used as a human food supplement because it contains abundant nutritional and antioxidant components. Therefore, we investigated the inhibitory effects of S. platensis on UVB-induced skin tumor development in Ogg1 knockout-(KO) mice and

Prognostic value of osteopontin in patients treated with primary radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of tumor osteopontin (OPN) in patients with squamous-cell head and neck cancer (SCHNC) was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: OPN expression was assessed by immunohistochemical methods in 50 patients, who were treated with primary radiotherapy (RT) for locally advanced SCHNC. The effects of OPN on clinical parameters, local-regional control after RT and metastasis-free survival, was assessed. RESULTS: The rate of OPN expression in tumor tissue was 76%. OPN positive cases had lower Hb levels (p=0.088). Mean time to local recurrence was 53.8 months (SE 3.9) i

Evaluation of capecitabine and oxaliplatin administered prior to and then concomitant to radiotherapy in high risk locally advanced rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Systemic failure remains a predominant issue in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). A new strategy using capecitabine and oxaliplatin (XELOX regimen) administered prior to and then concomitant to radiotherapy for high risk LARC is developed in our practice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the short-term efficacy and toxicities of this strategy. METHODS: Patients were treated with one cycle XELOX regimen (oxaliplatin 130 mg/m(2) on day 1 with capecitabine 1,000 mg/m(2) twice daily for 14 days every 3 weeks), followed by chemoradiation (50 Gy over 5 we

Erlotinib-induced rash spares previously irradiated skin.

BACKGROUND: Erlotinib is an epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor prescribed to patients with locally advanced or metastasized non-small cell lung carcinoma after failure of at least one earlier chemotherapy treatment. Approximately 75% of the patients treated with erlotinib develop acneiform skin rashes. CASE REPORT: A patient treated with erlotinib 3 months after finishing concomitant treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer is presented. Unexpectedly, the part of the skin that had been included in his previously radiotherapy field was completely spar

Evidence-based skin care management in radiation therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To review published studies evaluating interventions for the prevention and management of radiation skin reactions/dermatitis. DATA SOURCES: Research studies, review articles, and clinical practice guidelines. CONCLUSION: There is insufficient evidence in the literature to recommend specific topical or oral agents in the prevention or management of skin reactions. Recent limited evidence suggests that the use of calendula cream may reduce the incidence of grade 2 and 3 reactions in women with breast cancer. Additionally, early studies evaluating the use of barrier films or creams

Intratumoral Hydrogen Peroxide With Radiation Therapy in Locally Advanced Breast Cancer: Results From a Phase 1 Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a vital role in normal cellular processes but at supraphysiological concentrations causes oxidative stress and cytotoxicity, a property that is potentially exploitable for the treatment of cancer in combination with radiation therapy (RT). We report the first phase 1 trial testing the safety and tolerability of intratumoral H2O2 + external beam RT as a novel combination in patients with breast cancer and exploratory plasma marker analyses investigating possible mechanisms of action. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twelve patients with breast tumors ≥3 cm (surgic

A feasibility study using three-dimensional conformal boost technique in locally advanced carcinoma of the nasopharynx.

To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of dose escalation using three-dimensional (3-D) conformal boost technique, 21 patients with stage III or IV nasopharyngeal cancer were enrolled in a prospective protocol. All patients with node metastases initially received external radiotherapy by conventional technique up to 70.2 Gy, followed by 3-D conformal radiotherapy (3-D CRT) to the boost part up to 79.2 Gy with 9 Gy increments (daily fraction of 1.8 Gy for 5 days). A modified technique with the same dose escalation of 9 Gy using 3-D CRT was applied to 7 patients without node metastases, who
