Second-Order Motion-Compensated Echo-Planar Cardiac Diffusion-Weighted MRI: Usefulness of Compressed Sensitivity Encoding.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) using second-order motion-compensated spin echo (M2C) can provide noninvasive in-vivo microstructural assessment, but limited by relatively low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Echo-planar imaging (EPI) with compressed sensitivity encoding (EPICS) could address these issues. PURPOSE: To combine M2C DWI and EPCIS (M2C EPICS DWI), and compare image quality for M2C DWI. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Ten ex-vivo hearts, 10 healthy volunteers (females, 5 [50%]; mean ± SD of age, 25 ± 4 years), and 12 patients with diseased hearts (female, 1

Improved dark blood late gadolinium enhancement (DB-LGE) imaging using an optimized joint inversion preparation and T2 magnetization preparation.

PURPOSE: To develop a dark blood-late gadolinium enhancement (DB-LGE) sequence that improves scar-blood contrast and delineation of scar region. METHODS: The DB-LGE sequence uses an inversion pulse followed by T2 magnetization preparation to suppress blood and normal myocardium. Time delays inserted after preparation pulses and T2 -magnetization-prep duration are used to adjust tissue contrast. Selection of these parameters was optimized using numerical simulations and phantom experiments. We evaluated DB-LGE in 9 swine and 42 patients (56 ± 14 years, 33 male). Improvement in scar-blood contr

Regional attention-enhanced vision transformer for accurate Alzheimer's disease classification using sMRI data.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a significant global health challenge, necessitating early and accurate diagnosis to enable timely intervention. Structural MRI (sMRI) is a key imaging modality for detecting AD-related brain atrophy, yet traditional deep learning models like convolutional neural networks (CNNs) struggle to capture complex spatial dependencies critical for AD diagnosis. This study introduces the Regional Attention-Enhanced Vision Transformer (RAE-ViT), a novel framework designed for AD classification using sMRI data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) data

An optimized ensemble search approach for classification of higher-level gait disorder using brain magnetic resonance images.

Higher-Level Gait Disorder (HLGD) is a type of gait disorder estimated to affect up to 6% of the older population. By definition, its symptoms originate from the higher-level nervous system, yet its association with brain morphology remains unclear. This study hypothesizes that there are patterns in brain morphology linked to HLGD. For the first time in the literature, this work investigates whether deep learning, in the form of convolutional neural networks, can capture patterns in magnetic resonance images to identify individuals affected by HLGD. To handle this new classification task, we p

Cinematic Rendering With Positive Oral Contrast: Virtual Fluoroscopy.

Recently, a novel 3-dimensional visualization methodology for volumetric computed tomography data has become available. This method, known as cinematic rendering, uses an advanced lighting model to create photorealistic images from standard computed tomography acquisition data composed of isotropic voxels. We have observed that cinematic rendering visualizations in which patients have been administered dense, positive oral contrast do not have any substantive visual artifacts and can be used to demonstrate bowel pathology to advantage (ie, "virtual fluoroscopy"). In this technical note, we des

Force measurements during posterior calvarial vault osteodistraction: A novel measurement method.

Posterior calvarial vault osteodistraction (PCVO) has become increasingly popular in the correction of craniosynostosis. When compared to cranioplasty, PCVO offers a shorter, less invasive operation, greater intracranial volume advancement and a lower rate of relapse. In general, distraction protocols are based primarily on clinical observations rather than systematic research. Faster distraction protocols may reduce complications. However, distraction protocols producing higher forces can increase complications. Thus, we need to understand these forces in order to improve distraction protocol

A model for hepatic fibrosis: the competing effects of cell loss and iron on shortened modified Look-Locker inversion recovery T1 (shMOLLI-T1 ) in the liver.

PURPOSE: To propose a simple multicompartment model of the liver and use Bloch-McConnell simulations to demonstrate the effects of iron and fibrosis on shortened-MOLLI (shMOLLI) T1 measurements. Liver T1 values have shown sensitivity to inflammation and fibrosis, but are also affected by hepatic iron content. Modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (MOLLI) T1 measurements are biased by the lower T2 associated with high iron. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A tissue model was generated consisting of liver cells and extracellular fluid (ECF), with iron-dependent relaxation rates. Fibrosis was imitated b
