Efficacy and tolerability of nitric-zinc complex in the treatment of external genital warts and "difficult-to-treat" warts: a "proof of concept", prospective, multicentre, open study.

AIM: Treatment of plantar and periungueal warts (so called "difficult-to-treat" warts, DTW) and external genital warts (EGW) remains unsatisfactory. Medical or invasive procedures are partially effective and/or painful. Furthermore recurrences rates after treatments are still a relevant problem for all the available therapies. Nitric-zinc complex is a solution for topical application containing nitric acid, zinc, copper and organic acids able to induce a caustic effect of the wart trough mummification and proteins denaturation/coagulation action. Nitric-zinc complex has been shown to be an eff

Recurrent Kawasaki disease with strawberry tongue and skin desquamation in a young adult.

A 19-year-old man with history of Kawasaki disease (KD) at age 12 developed intractable fevers, swelling in hands and feet, arthralgias, and conjunctivitis, followed by strawberry tongue and desquamation of distal extremities. Laboratory studies revealed leukocytosis, thrombocytosis, anemia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein levels, and mildly elevated liver enzymes. He was empirically treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics without any improvement. Extensive infectious and rheumatologic workup remained negative. Recurrence of KD was diagnosed based on characterist

Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers/cosmetologists: retrospective analysis of north american contact dermatitis group data, 1994 to 2010.

BACKGROUND: European studies document that occupational contact dermatitis (CD) is common in hairdressers, but studies from North America are lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of occupational CD among North American hairdressers/cosmetologists (HD/CS) and to characterize responsible allergens and irritants as well as their sources. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of patients patch tested by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group between 1994 and 2010 was conducted. RESULTS: Of 35,842 patients, 432 (1.2%) were HD/CS. Significantly, mos

NailQoL: a quality-of-life instrument for onychomycosis.

BACKGROUND: The disease burden onychomycosis is not trivial. The aim is to develop a quality of life instrument to measure the onychomycosis burden. METHODS: 402 patients with mycologically-confirmed onychomycosis completed a baseline questionnaire of 39 quality of life items (modified Skindex-29 questions and 10 additional nail-specific questions). Internal consistency, reproducibility and responsiveness of the final instrument, NailQoL were measured. RESULTS: 15 items consisting of symptom (3), emotion (10), and functional (2) domains were retained in NailQoL. Symptom and emotion subscales

Hand-foot skin reaction in patients treated with sorafenib: a clinicopathological study of cutaneous manifestations due to multitargeted kinase inhibitor therapy.

BACKGROUND: Hand-foot skin reaction is a distinctive cutaneous side-effect of antineoplastic kinase inhibitor-targeted therapy. Severe hand-foot skin reaction requires postponement of treatment or dose reduction. Histopathological studies of skin toxicity associated with kinase inhibitors are currently unavailable. OBJECTIVES: To report the clinical and histopathological findings of hand-foot skin reaction produced by the multikinase inhibitor sorafenib. METHODS: Nine patients with metastatic carcinoma-seven with renal cell carcinoma (RCC), one with melanoma and one with hepatocellular carci

Diphencyprone in the management of refractory palmoplantar and periungual warts: an open study.

BACKGROUND: Induction of delayed-type hypersensitivity has recently been introduced for resistant viral warts. The method is not painful and less destructive than most other modalities. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the efficacy of topical diphencyprone (diphenylcyclopropenone) treatment for recalcitrant warts. METHODS: From September 1988 to June 1995, 134 patients with periungual and/or palmoplantar warts were entered into the study. Eight weekly applications were delivered. RESULTS: The scheduled treatment course and follow-up were completed by 111 patients. There were 49 complete and 18 partia

[Encyclopedist with a love of detail : Aulus Cornelius Celsus and his dermatological expertise].

BACKGROUND: The Roman author Aulus Cornelius Celsus wrote an eight volume encyclopedia of medicine. His remarks on terminology are considered paradigmatic in all fields of medicine. The dermatological pathology of Celsus has so far been analyzed mainly in summary descriptions of the medical knowledge of antiquity. A modern text-based interpretation of the contributions of the author to the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases is missing. OBJECTIVES: What kind of diagnostic and therapeutic expertise do the dermatological reports of Celsus convey? MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical encyclo

Skin symptoms in veterinary assistant staff and veterinarians: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Veterinary assistants and veterinarians are at an increased risk of developing an occupational skin disease, for example, irritant/allergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria and hand eczema (HE). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of skin problems and the influence of predisposing factors especially among veterinary assistants. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among veterinary assistant staff (n = 103) and veterinarians (n = 19). A questionnaire, specific IgE determination and photographs of hands were evaluated for skin symptoms. Logistic regress

Prevalence of, and work-related risk factors for, hand eczema in a Norwegian general population (The HUNT Study).

BACKGROUND: Chemical exposures at work and at home may cause hand eczema. However, this has been scarcely described for Norway. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of, and occupational risk factors for, hand eczema in Norway. METHODS: Among 50 805 respondents (aged ≥20 years) to the third Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT3), 5757 persons reported ever having hand eczema, and 4206 answered a hand eczema questionnaire. RESULTS: The lifetime prevalences of hand eczema were 8.4% in men and 13.8% in women (p < 0.001), with onset at age ≤10 years in 24% (men) and 20% (women), and onset at a

Case series on tropical diabetic hand syndrome.

Tropical diabetic hand syndrome is a term used to describe diabetes complication of the hand affecting people in the tropics. It consists of localized cellulitis with variable swelling and ulceration of the hands, progressive, fulminant hand sepsis and gangrene in extreme cases. This syndrome is not well-recognized and is therefore less frequently reported. The authors describe three different female patients who were known diabetics of varying duration presenting with this syndrome at our tertiary health center and who were successfully managed by both the surgical and medical units. The need
