PURPOSE: To document doses received by critical organs during adjuvant high-dose-rate (HDR) vaginal vault brachytherapy.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients treated with HDR vaginal vault radiation between January 1, 2009, and January 31, 2012, who had a CT simulation with the treatment cylinder in situ were included. The CT scans were retrospectively reviewed and the rectum, sigmoid, small bowel, and bladder were contoured. Standardized plans treating the upper 4 cm of the vaginal vault were used to deliver a total of 21 Gy (Gy) at 0.5 cm from the apex of the vaginal vault in three fractions.

The etiology of intestinal obstruction (I.O.) has changed markedly since the beginning of this century. In this series, the authors studied 121 cases of I.O. treated surgically; adhesions were the commonest cause of high intestinal obstruction, accounting for 43.03 percent in a total of 79 patients, with hernia being the obstruction lesion in 16.45 percent. Colo-rectal cancer were the commonest cause of low intestinal obstruction accounted for 73.81 percent, with volvulus of the sigmoid colon in 14.28 percent. Forty-four cases of diverticulosis of the colon were detected among 2,662 cases examined by barium enema in Tohoku University. This corresponds to 1.7% in frequency. On the other hand, 21 cases were found among 1,511 cases examined in Hirosaki University, giving 1.4% in frequency. It was more frequent in the male. Fusobacterium nucleatum is an invasive, adherent, and pro-inflammatory anaerobic bacterium involved in various infections and colorectal cancer. We report a case with pyogenic liver abscess, diagnosed with advanced sigmoid colon cancer, in whom F. nucleatum was simultaneously detected. In this patient, F. nucleatum was systematically analyzed using the molecular biological techniques of metagenome analysis, conventional PCR, and microbial fluorescence in situ hybridization.
