Estimation of Lung Volume Superimposed on the Mediastinum and Diaphragm on Chest Radiographs Using Upright Multidetector Row CT.

Purpose To quantify lung and lobar volumes superimposed on the mediastinum and diaphragm on upright chest radiographs using upright multidetector row CT and to compare them with supine measurements. Materials and Methods In this prospective study, asymptomatic Asian participants underwent both upright and supine multidetector row CT within 2 hours. Lung and lobar volumes were measured in each position. Ray-sum images were reconstructed to delineate mediastinal and diaphragmatic boundaries, and superimposed volumes in the posteroanterior direction were calculated. These CT-derived volumes were

Prediction of Hidden Coronary Artery Disease Using Machine Learning in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A machine learning technique for identifying hidden coronary artery disease (CAD) might be useful. We developed and validated machine learning models to predict patients with hidden CAD and to assess long-term outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: Multidetector coronary CT was performed for patients without a known history of CAD. Primary outcomes were defined as having any degree of CAD and having obstructive CAD (≥50% stenosis). Demographic variables, risk factors, laboratory results, Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment classification,

Heart valve sizing and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of transcatheter heart valve (THV) sizing on procedural results and clinical outcomes following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). BACKGROUND: The impact of individual THV sizing for patients with borderline aortic annulus anatomy remains unclear. METHODS: In the prospective BernTAVI registry, THV sizing conditions were retrospectively evaluated, and patients were categorized into three groups based on the recommendations and the sizing chart of the manufacturers: optimal sizing, borderline sizing (THV size located within 5% to each border o

Bronchial wall thickening is associated with severity of chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Though the relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and lower airway diseases is well recognized, the impact of CRS on bronchial wall structure has not been elucidated. Here, we evaluated the bronchial wall structure of CRS patients with or without diagnosed airway diseases by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT). METHODS: Subjects who underwent both chest CT and sinus CT within a year were recruited from consecutive medical records. CRS was defined as a Lund-Mackay score (LMS) of over 5 points. Airway dimensions were measured using validated software. Standard b

The vascularized groin lymph node flap (VGLN): Anatomical study and flap planning using multi-detector CT scanner. The golden triangle for flap harvesting.

INTRODUCTION: A growing number of surgeons perform lymph node transfers for the treatment of lymphedema. When harvesting a vascularized lymph node groin flap (VGLNF) one of the major concerns is the potential risk of iatrogenic lymphedema of the donor-site. This article helps understanding of the lymph node distribution of the groin in order to minimize this risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty consecutive patients undergoing abdominal mapping by multi-detector CT scanner were included and 100 groins analyzed. The groin was divided in three zones (of which zone II is the safe zone) and lymph no

Extrinsic compression of left main coronary artery due to dilated pulmonary trunk resulting in ischaemic symptoms.

Left coronary artery compression syndrome is an uncommon entity and characterized by compression of the LMCA in-between the aorta and an enlarged main pulmonary arterial trunk. It is usually associated with a congenital cardiac defect. Cardiac 64-slice MDCT provides a non-invasive and an accurate method for assessing the degree of dynamic LMCA compression throughout the cardiac cycle, its angulation relative to the left sinus of Valsalva and depiction of pulmonary pathology, making it a valuable tool in the workup of patients suspected of left coronary artery compression.

Left atrio-vertebral ratio: A new computed-tomography measurement to identify left atrial dilation.

BACKGROUND: Left cardiac chambers dilation, interstitial lung changes and pleural effusions are the characteristics of cardiogenic pulmonary oedema on computed tomography (CT) of the chest but mensuration of the left atrial size is not routinely performed. Cardiac chambers normal dimensions are known to be proportional to the patient's build and anthropomorphic data but adjustment of chambers dimensions to available elements seen on the axial CT images has never been evaluated before. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to use data easily available on axial images to directly scale the left atrium.

Initial experience with a tailor-made simulation and navigation program using a 3-D printer model of kidney transplantation surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Three-dimensional (3-D) printing systems allow for the creation of surgical models mimicking real tissue. We developed a kidney graft and pelvic cavity replica as a patient-specific 3-D model using a 3-D printing system with simultaneous jetting of different materials and subsequently evaluated the usefulness of surgical simulation and navigation of living kidney transplantation. METHODS: After generating a stereolithographic file of the organ surface based on multidetector computed tomographic data, we created a 3-D organ model using an inkjet 3-D printer and manufactured a pel

Arteria praebronchialis found on MDCT: potentially dangerous aberrant artery supplying the left lower lobe.

PURPOSE: To describe the incidence and CT features of a rare branching pattern of the pulmonary artery, the Arteria praebronchialis (AP): According to the initial description, the AP originates as the first branch of the left pulmonary artery, crosses the front of the left mainstem bronchus and then runs along the mediastinal margin as it gives off branches to one or more of the basal segments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since the incidental discovery of the first patient, contrast-enhanced CT was screened by one radiologist for the presence of AP, until three more cases were identified. In those

Use of 3D reconstruction of emergency and postoperative craniocerebral CT images to explore craniocerebral trauma mechanism.

We report a craniocerebral trauma case in which a man sustained severe skull fractures and cerebral contusions and it demanded elucidating the injury mechanism of being formed by strike or tumble. However, the initial features of skull fractures were mostly lost when the forensic pathologists involved in the case 5 months later because of injury healing and craniocerebral surgery. Therefore, we aimed to reconstruct the original skull fracture features by utilizing the digital reconstruction technologies in terms of CT (computed tomography) scanning, 3D (3-dimentional) reconstruction, and virtu

Circumferential type A aortic dissection with intimal intussusception.

A 62-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with sudden chest pain. CT examination showed the presence of an intimal flap in the aortic root and in the descending aorta, with no intimal flap in the ascending aorta and curvilinear filling defects in the aortic arch, and extension into the left subclavian artery. Surgical treatment consisted of ascending aorta replacement. During the operation, the intimal tear was found to be circumferential with intussusception of the intimal layer. The patient died at surgery.

CT Findings in People Who Were Environmentally Exposed to Asbestos in Korea.

Asbestos related pleuropulmonary disease has been emerging health problem for recent years. It can cause variable clinical symptoms and radiological abnormalities. However, there has been no report for their characteristics in subjects who were environmentally exposed to asbestos. We reviewed the CT images of 35 people who were environmentally exposed to asbestos in Chungnam province, Korea. The study result showed high incidence of pleural plaque and pulmonary fibrosis on chest CT (94% and 77%, respectively). The common CT findings of lung parenchymal lesions were as follows: centrilobular op

Fatal Clostridium perfringens septicemia suggested by postmortem computed tomography: A medico-legal autopsy case report.

We report a fatal case of suspected Clostridium (Cl.) perfringens septicemia in a previously healthy woman in her eighties. At first, she presented at the hospital complaining of upper abdominal discomfort and vomiting, and was discharged the next day after ruling out any fatal conditions. However, her condition deteriorated approximately 10h after discharge and she died shortly after. The postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) performed 29h postmortem revealed an excessive systemic gas accumulation compared with the postmortem external appearance and time elapsed since her death, which suggest
