AIMS: To assess the efficacy of Xen in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in varying glaucoma subtypes. To assess the effect of combined phacoemulsification. To determine the frequency of complications and explore further bleb management needed.
METHODS: Retrospective case note review of all patients undergoing Xen implantation across four centres from August 2015 to May 2017.
RESULTS: In total, 259 consecutive surgeries of 226 patients were reviewed. IOP reduced from 19.3 (SD ± 6.0) mmHg preoperatively to 14.2 (SD ± 4.4) at month 12 and 13.5 (SD ± 3.3) at month 18 (p < 0.0001). Medication

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of the severity of keratoconus on the corneal endothelium using specular microscopy.
METHODS: Seven hundred and twelve eyes from the Homburg Keratoconus Center (HKC) database were included in this retrospective study. Corneal endothelium was evaluated using the Tomey EM-3000 specular microscope. Keratoconus-related topographic and tomographic data were obtained from Scheimpflug-based tomography (Oculus Pentacam® HR). Eyes were classified into stages 0 (healthy) to 4 (severe keratoconus) according to the Topographic Keratoconus Classification (TKC). Subgroups

PURPOSE: Compare intraocular pressure (IOP) control and complication rates of a second glaucoma drainage device (GDD) to diode transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC) following failure of an initial GDD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eyes with 1 GDD that required a second GDD or TSCPC for glaucoma control were included. Exclusion criteria were a cyclodestructive procedure before initial GDD, no light perception vision, or follow-up <1 year. Failure was defined as ≥1 of (1) reoperation for lowering IOP; (2) explantation of second GDD; (3) persistent hypotony; (4) use of oral carbonic anhydrase inhi

PurposeTo evaluate the outcomes of Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) tube insertion through the anterior chamber angle (ACA) or through the ciliary sulcus (CS).Patients and methodsIn this case-control study, we retrospectively reviewed the charts of consecutive glaucoma patients who had undergone AGV implantation either through the ACA or the CS between March 2009 and December 2014. The main outcome measures were intraocular pressure (IOP), number of glaucoma medications prescribed, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), glaucoma type, success rate, complications, and survival ratios. PURPOSE: To assess the visual outcome and rotational stability of single-piece open loop toric Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) in a clinical setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective study, 122 eyes of 77 patients were followed up for a period of 12 months after cataract surgery with toric open loop IOL implantation. The pre-operative markings for the position of incision and IOL placement were done under slit lamp by anterior stromal puncture. The visual acuity, refraction, and IOL position were assessed at day 1, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery.

PURPOSE: To describe a new scleral fixation foldable intraocular lens (IOL): the Ultima.
METHODS: The novel IOL is a new scleral fixation acrylic hydrophilic foldable lens that offers a 360 degrees sulcus support due to its round geometry. It can be folded and inserted through a 4 mm clear cornea incision. Twenty-five eyes implanted with the Ultima lens were followed for 2 years.
RESULTS: Twenty-two eyes showed visual improvement, two eyes had no functional improvement, and one eye had visual deterioration. The IOL remained well centered and showed no signs of tilting in all patients during

PURPOSE: To report the clinical outcomes of an intrastromal corneal ring (ISCR) used in penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) that was designed to decrease postoperative corneal astigmatism, stabilize refraction, accelerate healing, and possibly reduce immune reactions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An 8 mm cobalt-titanium-molybdenum alloy ring was sutured into the PKP wounds. A prospective study compared the outcomes of PKP in 179 consecutive cases with a ring (Group 1) and 101 consecutive patients without a ring (Group 2). The ring was used in different types of endoepithelial degeneration as well as in

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to describe the authors' results with intrastromal corneal ring segments (Intacs) and a new variation of lamellar keratoplasty, termed intralamellar keratoplasty (ILK), for the treatment of keratoconus (KCN) and post-laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) ectasia.
METHODS: A retrospective review of contact lens-intolerant KCN and post-LASIK ectasia cases that had surgery with either Intacs or ILK was performed. The end points were mean uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent (SE), manifest and t

We retrospectively review the cases to evaluate the outcome of cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss and visual impairment (VI). Six adults with severe or profound hearing loss and significant VI underwent multichannel CI. Follow-up period ranged from 17 months to 7 years. Case history, etiology of visual and hearing loss, and benefit from CI were evaluated. To measure the outcomes, we selected the pure-tone thresholds with CI, the speech discrimination scores (SDS) using the Japanese video SDS system, the speech perception rates using the Japanese CD SDS

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical performance of a five-zone refractive multifocal intraocular lens (AMO, model MPC-25NB, Array).
METHODS: We performed a retrospective clinical trial of 31 cataract patients (mean age 64.3 years). The parameters studied were intraoperative and postoperative complications, distance and near visual acuity, spectacle use, decreased number of corneal endothelial cells, contrast sensitivity, percentage of glare disability, near binocular vision, and depth of focus.
RESULTS: Intraoperatively, iris damage occurred in two eyes (4.2%), vitreous loss in one eye (2.1%),
