Photosynthesis and hydrogen energy for sustainability: harnessing the sun for a greener future.

At the dawn of the 21st century, the rapid expansion of manufacturing plants and the widespread destruction of natural habitats significantly contributed to accelerating global warming. This phenomenon has led to severe droughts, irreversible agricultural damage, and substantial challenges in securing food supplies for the burgeoning global population. The alarming surge in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations underscores the urgent need to embrace clean energy technologies. To date, the primary goal of mankind is to develop innovative approaches to return Earth's ecology to its pre-indus

Pharmacotherapy review: Emerging treatment modalities in transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis.

PURPOSE: This review aims to summarize the evidence and pharmacological characteristics of treatment options for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM). Additionally, this review highlights the role of clinical pharmacists in helping to secure newly introduced therapies. SUMMARY: ATTR-CM, a disease characterized by misfolded protein that is deposited in the myocardium and disrupts cardiac functioning, has historically been underdiagnosed due to the need for invasive biopsy and an illusion of rarity. Once diagnosed, limited treatment modalities for ATTR-CM have led providers to rely on

Morphometric features and performances of Black Bengal goat in Bangladesh.

Black Bengal goat (BBG) is the most adaptable, widely distributed, and prominent goat breed in Bangladesh, well known in the world for its high prolificacy, low demand of feed, tolerance to harsh weather conditions, and disease resistance with remarkably good quality red meat and skin. A large number of indiscriminate research reports on BBG have been published; however, the review on the productive and reproductive performances with different physiological features of BBG in Bangladesh is scarce. This review was conducted to investigate and summarize the available research reports on BBGs to

Socioeconomic status and cardiovascular health in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The goals of this review are to evaluate the impact of socioeconomic (SE) status on the general health and cardiovascular health of individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic and also discuss the measures to address disparity. SE status is a strong predictor of premature morbidity and mortality within general health. A lower SE status also has implications of increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and poorer CVD risk factor profiles. CVD comorbidity is associated with a higher case severity and mortality rate from COVID-19, with both CVD and COVID-19 sharing important risk factors. The

Regional Rodent-Borne Infectious Diseases in North America: What Wilderness Medicine Providers Need to Know.

Rodents can transmit infectious diseases directly to humans and other animals via bites and exposure to infectious salivary aerosols and excreta. Arthropods infected while blood-feeding on rodents can also transmit rodent-borne pathogens indirectly to humans and animals. Environmental events, such as wet winters, cooler summers, heavy rains, and flooding, have precipitated regional rodent-borne infectious disease outbreaks; these outbreaks are now increasing with climate change. The objectives of this review are to inform wilderness medicine providers about the environmental conditions that ca

Challenges of Empirical Antibiotic Therapy for Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Children.

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, responsible for more than 14% of deaths in children younger than 5 years of age. Due to difficulties with pathogen identification and diagnostics of CAP in children, targeted antimicrobial therapy is not possible, hence the widespread use of empirical antibiotics, in particular penicillins, cephalosporin, and macrolides. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to address medical, societal, and political issues associated with the widespread use of empirical antibiotics for CAP in the United Kingdom, I

Modality-specific nutrition support in ESRD: weighing the evidence.

Protein-calorie malnutrition affects a large fraction of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and contributes significantly to the high rates of mortality and morbidity observed in this population. Observational studies of specific interventions, including intradialytic parenteral nutrition (IDPN), suggest that aggressive nutrition support may be of some benefit to some patients with ESRD. Due in part to lack of data derived from prospective, randomized clinical trials, and to the large expense associated with these therapies, Medicare and other payers have strongly discouraged the pre

Climate change and the potential global distribution of Agrobacterium tumefaciens: a MaxEnt modeling approach for current and future climate scenarios.

Climate change is fundamentally altering the geographic ranges of plant-pathogenic microorganisms, with profound implications for global food security and agricultural sustainability. Agrobacterium tumefaciens, the gram-negative soil bacterium responsible for crown gall disease in over 140 genera of dicotyledonous plants, is among the most economically significant phytopathogens worldwide, yet its macroecological distribution under current and projected future climates has never been rigorously characterised. Here, we apply the Maximum Entropy algorithm (MaxEnt) to 415 quality-filtered georefe…

Government extension, social support and farmers' response to climate-adaptive technologies: Insights from a discrete choice experiment.

Climate change poses substantial challenges to agricultural production systems and rural livelihoods. Leveraging agricultural extension programs to promote climate-adaptive technologies is an important pathway to enhancing agricultural resilience and ensuring food security. However, how government extension services, social support mechanisms, and economic incentives jointly shape farmers' preferences for climate-adaptive technologies remains insufficiently understood. Based on survey data from 1,547 farm households in the main maize-producing region of Liaoning Province in China, this study e…

Waterlogging and hypoxia in plant abiotic stress.

Waterlogging is a major abiotic stress affecting 12-27% of global cultivated land and causing average yield losses of 20-33% in cereals and legumes. This poses a serious threat to food security in flood-prone regions. Soil saturation reduces gas diffusion nearly 10,000-fold compared to air. This rapidly induces hypoxia or anoxia in the root zone within hours to days. This oxygen limitation forces a metabolic shift from efficient aerobic respiration (approximately 36 ATP per glucose) to anaerobic fermentation (approximately 2 ATP per glucose). This shift results in severe energy deficits, cytop…
