[The role of IPA and dual diagnosis in psychiatry].

The co-occurrence of a psychiatric disorder and a substance use disorder affects many patients in adult psychiatry, with significant clinical and social repercussions. The fragmentation of healthcare systems hinders continuity of care. A survey of 147 nurses at two psychiatric facilities explored existing practices regarding dual diagnosis and defined the roles of advanced practice nurses. These nurses contribute to improving care and reducing disruptions in the care pathway.

Learning from experience: Revolutionizing vascular care through nursing morbidity and mortality conferences.

BACKGROUND: Traditional morbidity and mortality (M&M) conferences often lack nursing involvement or perspectives despite nurses being frontline caregivers. On a vascular surgery unit, pre-intervention data revealed concerning gaps in nurses' medical knowledge and low confidence in escalating patient concerns to the vascular team. PURPOSE: To implement a structured nursing-led M&M conference to improve nurses' clinical knowledge, care confidence, and interprofessional collaboration in vascular care. METHODS: A structured implementation approach was employed, utilizing a dedicated electronic p

A Clinical Nurse Specialist-Directed Initiative to Reduce Postoperative Urinary Retention in Spinal Surgery Patients.

: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is the inability to void when the bladder is full after surgery. It is a common complication in postoperative patients, especially in patients undergoing spinal surgery. At our institution, patients who were discharged from the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) to the inpatient surgical unit typically had bladder distention and a bladder volume of more than 450 mL. In an effort to address this situation, an interprofessional group of advanced practice RNs and physicians formed a team, reviewed the existing literature, examined the PACU nursing practice gu

Transforming Nursing Education for Nurse Prescribing: A SWOT Analysis of Gynecological Specialist Nurses in the Greater Bay Area.

OBJECTIVE: The 2023 Shenzhen legislation permitting specialist nurses to prescribe represents a milestone in Chinese nursing practice. This positions the Greater Bay Area (GBA)-a major economic and healthcare hub in southern China comprising 11 cities including Hong Kong, Macao, and Guangzhou-as a pioneer in healthcare innovation. Yet policy advancement has outpaced educational infrastructure, particularly for gynecological specialist nurses managing chronic conditions in integrative settings. This study evaluates the strategic context for implementing prescribing education and proposes action

Toward a holistic understanding of cancer cachexia: Application of the human response to illness model.

Cachexia is a commonly presenting multidimensional syndrome in individuals living with advanced cancer. Given its prevalence of between 50% and 80%, nurses are going to encounter individuals manifesting ongoing loss of skeletal muscle mass (with or without loss of fat mass) that can be partially but not entirely reversed by conventional nutritional support. Thus nurses require a comprehensive understanding of this complex clinical problem. Research suggests, however, that nurses receive minimal education about cachexia or its management. Limited understanding undermines the ability to confiden

Early Nursing-Home Psychoeducation for Family Caregivers: Feasibility and Preliminary Changes in Anxiety, Depression, and Coping.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the feasibility of an on-site psychoeducational program for family caregivers after nursing-home admission and to describe short-term pre-post changes in anxiety, depression, and coping. METHODS: In a single-arm pre-post implementation study across 70 nursing homes in the Paris area, 138 caregivers attended seven weekly 2-hour workshops led by a geriatrician, psychologists, and an advanced practice nurse. Outcomes at baseline and one week after the last session were Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A/HADS-D) scores and the 38-item Caregiver Assessment of Mana

Nurse-Performed Point-Of-Care Ultrasound-guided Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter Insertion: A Standardized Nursing Protocol.

This article presents a standardized, evidence-informed nursing protocol for point-of-care ultrasound-guided peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement in adult patients. Rather than serving as a validation study, this work provides a structured procedural framework that translates current best evidence into a reproducible, step-by-step approach to support safe and consistent bedside practice by trained nurses. The protocol is organized using an operational adaptation of the Indication-Acquisition-Interpretation-Nursing Decision-Making framework to guide both clinical reasoning an

A theory-based approach to nursing shared governance.

BACKGROUND: The discipline of nursing uses a general definition of shared governance. The discipline's lack of a specified theory with precepts and propositions contributes to persistent barriers in progress toward building evidence-based knowledge through systematic study. PURPOSE: The purposes of this article were to describe the development and elements of a program theory approach for nursing shared governance implementation and to recommend further testing. METHOD: Five studies using multiple methods are described using a structured framework. The studies led to the use of Lipsey's meth

Evaluation of innovative research-based fact sheets.

Research-based fact sheets are simple, clear, and concise one-page reviews of a topic (e.g., culture and ethnicity, homelessness) with tips to improve culturally competent care. Using research helps nurses achieve promotion, advance careers, and enhance patient care. The background, literature, purpose, methods, and evaluation of fact sheets are reported. In a survey, 142 nurses reported that the fact sheets about general topics (end of life, depression, heart failure, smoking cessation, ethnicity, homelessness, hypertension, conflict management, medication safety, and pressure ulcers) were 99

The lived experience of those who work with or hire Doctor of Nursing Practice-prepared nurses in practice: A phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Health care systems require strong practice leadership to address increasing complexity, workforce demands, and quality outcomes. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) nurses are educated to lead evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and system-level change; however, variability in role clarity and organizational support limits full utilization, and qualitative evidence describing their impact remains limited. PURPOSE: To explore the lived experiences of those who hire or work with DNP-prepared nurses. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative phenomenological design was used with a purposiv

[Changes in the role of nurses in the management of chronic conditions: a comparative qualitative analysis of registered nurses and nursing assistants].

The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, combined with healthcare professional shortage, makes a reorganization of the healthcare system essential. This qualitative study compares the practices of sixteen nurses (ten registered nurses [RNs] and six advanced practice nurses [APNs]) in the context of chronic disease management. Results reveal two parallel trajectories: that of the RNs, who develop empirical expertise, and that of the APNs, who possess regulatory authority. Long COVID has highlighted this.

[A multidisciplinary and integrative approach in adult mental health clinics].

In medical-psychological centers, care is provided through a multidisciplinary team comprising nurses, advanced practice nurses specializing in psychiatry and mental health, psychologists, and psychiatrists. These care approaches work in a complementary manner - particularly between nursing care and psychotherapy - enabling support for both symptoms and psychological development. Ms. C.'s situation illustrates this integrative care approach.

The Invisible Workforce: An Algorithmic Audit of Nursing, Primary Care, and Holistic Gaps in AI-Generated Survivorship Plans.

OBJECTIVES: Advanced ovarian cancer survivorship requires multidisciplinary coordination. As patients use large language models (LLMs) as clinical navigators, essential professional roles may be inconsistently represented. This study evaluates the comprehensiveness, professional attribution, and readability of LLM-generated survivorship plans. METHODS: An algorithmic audit (N = 50) queried ChatGPT-5.1 using a standardized persona: a 58-year-old advanced ovarian cancer survivor. A dual-layer content analysis assessed nine guideline-derived domains, distinguishing explicit professional attribut
