Neuropsychiatric changes precede classic motor symptoms in ALS and do not affect survival.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate patient susceptibility to neuropsychiatric symptoms in the context of progression of more classic motor symptoms in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to examine the impact of neuropsychiatric symptoms on survival. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 219 patients with ALS (limb onset = 159; bulbar onset = 60), with neuropsychiatric symptoms measured using the Motor Neuron Disease Behavioural Scale and more classic ALS symptoms assessed by the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised. For detection of symptom susceptibility (neuropsychiat

Criteria for symptom remission revisited: a study of patients affected by schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare severity criteria defined by the Remission in Schizophrenia Working Group (RSWGcr) with other criteria in relation to functional and neurocognitive outcome. METHODS: 112 chronic psychotic outpatients were examined. Symptomatic remission according to RSWGcr was compared with the outcome achieved using criteria based on PANSS Positive and Negative Scales (PANSS-PNScr) and the entire PANSS (PANNS-TScr). RESULTS: Remission rates were 50%, 35% and 23% respectively at RSWGcr, PANSS-PNScr and PANNS-TScr; functional remission rates were 32%, 42% and 54%. Sensit

Dimensions of negative affectivity, self-reported somatic symptoms, and health-related behaviors.

This study focused on the relationship between personality dispositions, self-reported somatic symptoms, and health-related behaviors in undergraduate students. Findings are presented which indicate systematic correlations between health complaints and negative affectivity (NA), a common and pervasive mood disposition. Generally, there was a stronger relationship between NA and self-reported somatic symptoms than between NA and variables reflecting health-related behaviors, lifestyle, and general fitness. Significant correlations between health complaints and capacity for imaginative involveme

Medial prefrontal cortex-targeted low-intensity focused ultrasound alleviates migraine-related allodynia and affective symptoms via modulating glutamate/GABA balance in mice.

BACKGROUND: Migraine affects nearly one billion people worldwide and remains a major global health burden with inadequate treatment options. In this study, transcranial low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) targeting the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) was assessed as a novel, non-invasive neuromodulatory strategy for migraine abortive treatment. The therapeutic potential and safety of LIFU were evaluated in animal models to support its future clinical translation. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were administered intraperitoneally with nitroglycerin (NTG) to induce an acute migraine model, wher

Lagged symptom-level associations among pain, sleep disturbance, and depressive-affective symptoms in adults aged ≥50 years: an international longitudinal multi-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pain, sleep disturbance, and depressive-affective symptoms commonly co-occur in adults aged ≥ 50 years, but their temporal ordering at the individual symptom level remains unclear. We estimated lagged symptom-level associations across five international aging cohorts and quantified heterogeneity between cohorts. METHODS: We analyzed harmonized longitudinal data from five aging cohorts with repeated pain and affective symptom measures: ELSA, HRS, KLoSA, MHAS, and SHARE. CHARLS and LASI were excluded due to the absence of repeated direct pain measures or insufficient longitudinal wa

Moderating effects of affective interventions on manic symptoms and quality of life: A cognitive improvement study based on patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Initially, psychotherapy was the primary treatment for bipolar disorder. However, with advances in biomedical research and the rapid efficacy of medications, psychosocial treatments have been increasingly overlooked. Despite evidence supporting bipolar disorder as a "biological disease," psychotherapy remains essential as an adjunct to medication and other treatments, including emotional interventions. METHODS: This study included 76 patients with bipolar affective disorder admitted to our hospital between February 2022 and February 2023. Patients were randomly assigned to an inte

Crisis of objectivity: using a personalized network model to understand maladaptive sensemaking in a patient with psychotic, affective, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric comorbidities have proven a consistent challenge. Recent approaches emphasize the need to move away from categorical descriptions of symptom clusters towards a dimensional view of mental disorders. From the perspective of phenomenological psychopathology, this shift is not enough, as a more detailed understanding of patients' lived experience is necessary as well. One phenomenology-informed approach suggests that we can better understand the nature of psychiatric disorders through personalized network models, a comprehensive description of a person's lifeworld in the

Effects of celecoxib augmentation of antidepressant or anxiolytic treatment on affective symptoms and inflammatory markers in patients with anxiety disorders: exploratory study.

Prolonged stress has been associated with elevated levels of circulating proinflammatory cytokines. Cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors such as celecoxib exert anti-inflammatory effects and may enhance the response to antidepressant drug treatment in patients with depressive disorders, but their effect on anxiety symptoms in patients with anxiety disorders is uncertain. Patients with a primary diagnosis of an anxiety disorder, with stabilised symptoms, underwent either 6 weeks of celecoxib augmentation of continued treatment (n = 18) or continued 'treatment as usual' (n = 9). Assessments included the

Do affective or dissociative symptoms mediate the association between childhood sexual trauma and transition to psychosis in an ultra-high risk cohort?

We have previously reported an association between childhood sexual trauma and transition to psychosis in an Ultra High Risk (UHR) population. We aimed to investigate if this association was mediated by affective or dissociative symptoms. Data were from a large UHR for psychosis cohort study. None of the potential mediators (depression, anxiety, dissociation, mood swings and mania, assessed by the HAM-D, HAM-A and the CAARMS symptom scales) significantly mediated the total association between sexual abuse scores and transition. At the point of transition, the mechanistic pathway from sexual tr

The moderator effects of affective temperaments, childhood abuse and adult stressful life events on depressive symptoms in the nonclinical general adult population.

BACKGROUND: We recently demonstrated in the structural equation modeling that four of five affective temperaments, as measured by the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego auto-questionnaire version (TEMPS-A), are strong mediators between childhood abuse and depressive symptoms in the nonclinical general adult population. In this study, we hypothesized that affective temperaments, childhood abuse, and adult life events have moderator effects that interact with one another on depressive symptoms. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to analyze this inte

Cognitive and affective empathy in children with conduct problems: additive and interactive effects of callous-unemotional traits and autism spectrum disorders symptoms.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) symptoms are characterized by problems in empathy; however, these behavioral features are rarely examined together in children with conduct problems. This study investigated additive and interactive effects of CU traits and ASD symptoms in relation to cognitive and affective empathy in a non-ASD clinic-referred sample. Participants were 134 children aged 3 to 9 years (M=5.60; 79% boys) with oppositional defiant/conduct disorder, and their parents. Clinicians, teachers, and parents reported on dimensions of child behavior, and

Self-referential processing and emotion regulation in epilepsy: Associations with affective symptom burden.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation and self-referential processing are core constructs in mental health, yet their interaction remains unexplored in epilepsy. Given the high prevalence of anxiety and depression in this population, this study investigates their interplay in people with epilepsy (PWE) and its association with affective symptomatology. METHODS: 23 PWE and 34 healthy controls (HC) completed the Self-Referential Encoding Task (SRET), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), Affective Style Questionnaire (ASQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-

The Mediating Role of Negative Affect in the Relationship Between Anger Rumination and Somatic Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of somatisation is associated with a strong impairment of quality of life. Recent research suggests common underlying mechanism of central sensitisation in functional syndromes and chronic pain, with emotion regulation (ER) processes closely linked to somatic symptoms. This study examines the relationship between negative affect (NA) and anger rumination (AR) and its influence on somatisation. METHODS: Five hundred seven individuals participated (mean age = 34.60 ± 13.22 years; 380 women). They completed the Patient Health Questionnaire, Negative Affect Scale, an

PPIs Have It: Does Tegoprazan Affect Gastric Emptying and Produce Dyspeptic Symptoms?

The potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs) are a novel class of potent antisecretory drugs that unlike the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are not dependent on activated proton pumps, acting near maximally from the first dose, a pharmacokinetic advantage over PPIs. Tegoprazan, a novel P-CAB, offers potent and rapid acid suppression without delaying gastric emptying, distinguishing it from PPIs. This commentary contextualizes these results within the broader landscape of functional dyspepsia management, highlighting the potential benefits of tegoprazan in patients requiring antisecretory th

Positive affect longitudinally buffers the negative effect of health anxiety on gastrointestinal symptoms.

People with significant health anxiety may experience brain-gut dysregulation, leading to increased visceral sensitivity and greater gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Positive affect (PA), on the other hand, may serve as a protective characteristic, buffering the negative impact of health anxiety on GI symptoms. This study investigated interrelationships between health anxiety, PA, and GI symptoms. Longitudinal data were collected on health anxiety, PA, and GI symptoms via an online survey from 861 adults at two timepoints, 4 weeks apart. Regression models were conducted to examine the moderatin

Does total knee arthroplasty affect overactive bladder symptoms in female patients?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: In the current study we hypothesized that total knee arthroplasty might improve the overactive bladder symptoms by providing pain relief and improving physical function. METHODS: One hundred patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty were preoperatively evaluated for overactive bladder and 47 patients that met inclusion criteria were included in this study. All the patients included in the study were assessed both preoperatively and at the 3rd month postoperatively using the Overactive Bladder-Validated 8 (OAB-V8) questionnaire for overactive bladder symptoms,

Preoperative Duration of Symptoms Does Not Affect Outcomes of Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have examined the impact of preoperative duration of symptoms (DOS) on lumbar spinal surgery outcomes although this has not been explored for anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF). OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of preoperative DOS on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of ALIF with posterior instrumentation. METHODS: A database was retrospectively reviewed for ALIFs with posterior instrumentation. PROMs recorded at preoperative, 6-wk, 12-wk, 6-mo, and 1-yr postoperative timepoints included Visual Analog Scale back and leg, Oswestry Disability Index, 12-
