BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are a relatively common incidental finding on CT scans of the brain. They most commonly occur in the middle cranial fossa, where familial occurrence has rarely been reported. Posterior fossa arachnoid cysts are more unusual.
CASE HISTORIES: We report the presence of quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cysts in siblings.

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is an uncommon disorder characterized by a severe lancinating pain commonly induced by swallowing. When the pain is resistant to medical management, surgical treatment such as microvascular decompression (MVD) or partial rhizotomy is performed. We report a case of glossopharyngeal neuralgia caused by adhesive arachnoid, in which pain disappeared solely by dissection of the peripheral arachnoid around the glossopharyngeal nerve.

During the period from 1983 to 1999, 12 patients with symptomatic arachnoid cyst were treated. The mean patient age was 20.6 years. The most common location was the middle fossa (10 cases). Initial CT scan revealed associated subdural hygroma in 7 patients and hydrocephalus in one. Clinical symptoms were related to increased intracranial pressure, cranio-megaly and seizure. One infant with a huge arachnoid cyst was treated, using a cystoperitoneal (CP) shunt. Four patients underwent membraectomy. Combination CP shunt and membraectomy was performed in 5 patients. The remaining 2 arachnoid cysts

Our understanding of Late Jurassic sauropod faunas heavily relies on the fossil record of the northern hemisphere. During the last two decades, paleontological fieldwork in the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian Cañadón Calcáreo Formation of Argentina has yielded several sauropod remains. Here we present a new taxon, Bicharracosaurus dionidei gen. et sp. nov., represented by a partial vertebral column and a fragment of the ilium. Anatomical as well as histological evidence suggest that the new specimen represents an adult individual. The posterior dorsals of Bicharracosaurus show great similarity with iso

BACKGROUND: Although many children experience violence and abuse each year, there is a lack of instruments measuring parents' emotional reactions to these events. One instrument, the Parent Emotional Reaction Questionnaire (PERQ), allows researchers and clinicians to survey a broad spectrum of parents' feelings directly related to their children's traumatic experiences. The objectives of this study were: (1) to examine the factor structure and the internal consistency of the PERQ; (2) to evaluate the discriminant validity of the instrument; and (3) to measure whether potential subscales are se

We encountered a rare case of craniospinal arachnoid cyst. A 54-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic for headache, posterior nuchal pain, and vomiting, which had started one month before. On admission she was drowsy, and neurological examination revealed papilledema and prompt deep tendon reflexes bilaterally. T1 weighted images of MRI revealed a homogeneous, round, low density mass in the left cerebellar hemisphere which extended down on the dorsal side of the spinal cord to the level of C2. It was high intensity on T2 weighted images and was not enhanced by Gd-DTPA. The fourth ventricle

Because of the extreme rarity of intradiploic arachnoid cysts, their pathogenesis is unknown; congenital or traumatic origins are suggested. We report an intradiploic arachnoid cyst in a 57-year-old woman, without a history of trauma, in whom a forgotten injury might play a significant role.

The results of surgical treatment in 21 cases of intracranial arachnoid cysts, mostly in adults, are reviewed. There were 19 supratentorial and 2 infratentorial cysts. In all but one supratentorial cyst cases epileptic seizures were the major clinical presentation. CT scan was helpful in the diagnosis in most cases. In 7 patients CT-cisternography was performed and in 3 cases a connection of cyst cavity to intracranial cerebrospinal fluid space was demonstrated. The cysts were treated surgically in different ways including craniotomy for fenestration of cyst wall, resection of cyst wall and ne

Arachnoid intracranial cysts are benign lesions which until recently have been considered to be quite uncommon. They are benign congenital lesions usually discovered at an early age. We have recently treated two patients with advanced age and arachnoid cysts, unusual due to their location and extent. Both of them presented clinically with an organic dementia syndrome with some similarities to that seen in normal pressure hydrocephalus. Both recovered fully after surgery. We review the literature and try to emphasize the clinical differences between arachnoid and the more rare neuroepithelial c

Between 1980 and 1982, 8 children with congenital arachnoid cysts were treated at the University of Florida, 2 patients presented with unusual clinical syndromes, including isosexual precocity and a cephalic movement disorder. Cystoperitoneal shunting in combination with ventriculoperitoneal shunting for associated hydrocephalus was employed in the treatment of all supratentorial lesions, and proved to be a safe, efficacious mode of therapy.

Generally arachnoid cysts are congenital in origin and found over the cerebral convexity, in the major fissures, and in the folded portions of the brain wherever the arachnoid membrane extends. Including other central nervous system (CNS) cysts, the location of these cysts has implications as to their origin, for examples, intracerebral cysts generally are ependymal cysts, while extracerebral cysts are mostly arachnoid cysts. An 8-month-old boy was admitted to our department because of enlarged head and developmental retardation. Computerized tomographic scan (CT) revealed remarkable hydroceph

An arachnoid cyst of the internal auditory canal causing compression atrophy of nerve trunks was found in each of three human temporal bones. Arachnoid cysts are found in about 0.5% of operations for suspected neoplasm of the internal auditory canal. There is no current method for differentiating intracanalicular neoplasm from arachnoid cysts.

Clinical and radiological findings in a 2-year-old boy with a large multilocular infratentorial arachnoid cyst are presented. The cyst was extended in the bilateral paracollicular and retrocerebellar region and was communicating with each other but not with the ventricular system. Associated with those cysts was a significant degree of hydrocephalus due to compression of the fourth ventricle. Delayed metrizamide CT scan showed totally isolated cysts from CSF circulation although the cystic content was determined as the CSF.

Two infants who presented with macrocephaly had very large noncommunicating cysts at the cranial base that were displacing the brain. Only one of the patients was hydrocephalic; he eventually underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting after craniotomy and attempted internal drainage of the cyst. The other infant had a cystoperitoneal shunt. Both have done well after 4 and 6 years of follow-up, respectively. These large arachnoid cysts are bilateral lesions with the potential for severe surgical complications and a questionable possibility of cure. The authors recommend systematic radiological inv

BACKGROUND: Spinal arachnoiditis (SA) involves chronic inflammation of the spinal arachnoid membrane, often due to surgery, trauma, infections, or autoimmune issues. It leads to ongoing pain and sensory disturbances in the back and lower limbs, along with possible bladder and bowel issues. Treatments focus on symptom relief and improving life quality. Despite growing research interest, a comprehensive analysis of SA's research trends is missing. This study uses bibliometric analysis to explore SA research trends, offering guidance for future research directions.
METHODS: The study analyzed SA…

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular conflict is considered a key element of classical trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and consequently, microvascular decompression (MVD) is an effective treatment. Nevertheless, failures of MVD are described by many authors. In some patients, the arachnoid membranes surrounding the trigeminal nerve and neighbouring vessels may be thickened and adhesive. Here we analyse the impact of such focal arachnoiditis on outcome after MVD for TN.
METHODS: A cohort of prospectively followed patients after their MVD was reviewed for intraoperative, imaging and clinical data if findings of…

Laminectomy-induced cauda equina adhesion has been proved by rat experiments and postoperative serial MRI in humans. A degenerative change of the cauda equina has been proved when cauda equina adhesion has been prolonged. Since it has not been reported how the nutritional supply is changed in such a condition, we evaluated the glucose supply to the adhered cauda equina in rats. Wistar rats were divided into the following three groups: the control group which received no operation, the laminectomy group which underwent L5-L6 laminectomy only, and the koalin group which received 5 mg of kaolin o
