Dual-Route Extraction and Characterization of Cellulose From Cow Dung: Green Natural Microbial Extraction and Soxhlet-Assisted Approaches.

Cow dung is a low-cost lignocellulosic biomass generated in large quantities across India, yet remains underutilized and contributes to environmental pollution when improperly managed. In this study, cellulose was isolated from cow dung using two different approaches a green, microbially-assisted natural extraction process under dark conditions with mild chemical uses, and a chemically driven Soxhlet-assisted method employing alkali oxidative pretreatment. The physicochemical characteristics of the isolated cellulose were examined using the Van Soest compositional protocol, FTIR spectroscopy,

Antifungal Performance and Mechanisms of Carbon Quantum Dots in Cellulosic Materials.

Cellulosic materials, which are widely utilized in daily life, are highly susceptible to fungal degradation. However, commercial fungicides are usually toxic, posing severe threats to human health and the environment, highlighting the necessity of developing eco-friendly antifungal agents for cellulosic materials. In this work, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) via a microwave-assisted method. CQDs with proper structure demonstrated significant antifungal effects against both brown-rot (Postia placenta, Pp) and white-decay fungi (Trametes versicolor, Tv) on various cellu

Surface-Modified Cellulose Nanofibers for Stabilization of Barite in Water-Based Drilling Fluids Under High Temperatures.

Surface modification is an effective strategy for extending the application of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) under harsh conditions while preserving their sustainable characteristics. Herein, thermally stable modified TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (MTCNFs) were fabricated by free-radical graft copolymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AM) onto the CNF surface. Spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations confirmed the formation of a polymer-grafted shell enriched with sulfonic acid and amide functionalities. Surface grafting markedly enhanced

Microbial-photoelectrochemical cell for the conversion of raw cellulose materials into electrical power and chemicals.

Exploiting biomass as a fuel source has attracted increasing attention over the last few decades. Combined biotic-abiotic systems can enhance conversion efficiency, but biotic reactions often require oxygen-free conditions, which are hindered by oxygen evolution at the photoanode. Herein, we develop a modular microbial-photoelectrochemical cell (MPEC) that facilitates the one-pot degradation and light-induced conversion of cellulosic material into electrical power and added-value compounds. A BiVO4 photoanode functionalized with cobalt phosphate (BiVO4/CoP) was engineered to suppress undesired

All-natural aerogel of nanoclay/cellulose nanofibers with hierarchical porous structure for rapid hemostasis.

Developing an effective and user-friendly hemostatic agent is highly desired in the treatment of hemorrhage. Inspired by the natural nanostructure and abundant hydroxyl groups of cellulose and clay minerals, we designed an aerogel (HNTs/TOCNs) composed of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) with a hierarchical porous structure for the treatment of bleeding, using a simple and environmentally friendly self-assembly method. TOCNs formed a three-dimensional porous scaffold with excellent water-holding capacity. The incorporation of HNTs enhanced the hemosta

Diced cartilage in capsula based on diced cartilage in fascia technique: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The Turkish Delight technique, initially described by Erol in 2000, involves the use of diced cartilage wrapped in oxidized cellulose (Surgicel™) for nasal grafting in secondary rhinoplasty. CASE SUMMARY: This paper presents a novel adaptation called Diced Cartilage in Capsula, where diced cartilage is wrapped in the periprosthetic capsule material formed from a previous breast augmentation procedure instead of fascia, a technique based on the Diced Cartilage in Fascia method. Utilizing autologous, biocompatible material minimizes foreign body reactions and enhances graft integrat

The hydroxyapatite Turkish Delight: a technical note.

Nasal dorsum augmentation is commonly performed using autologous cartilage grafts, also in the Turkish Delight technique. The aim of this study was to describe a modification of the Turkish Delight technique for dorsal augmentation consisting of small hydroxyapatite-calcium carbonate granules (0.5-1 mm) that were wrapped in layers of oxidized cellulose and glued with 1-2-cm3 fibrin sealant and to compare its utility with that of other techniques. Clinically stable and satisfactory results were achieved in the four cases examined. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) imaging revealed that t

Bio-orthogonal functionalization of bacterial cellulose combining metabolic glycoengineering and click chemistry.

Bacterial cellulose possesses excellent biocompatibility and mechanical strength but lacks the bioactivity needed for many biomedical and healthcare applications. To address this limitation, we develop a metabolic glycoengineering-click chemistry strategy that enables in situ incorporation of azide groups into bacterial cellulose, followed by mild and selective conjugation of alkyne-bearing functional molecules. This approach avoids harsh chemical treatments, preserves the native properties of bacterial cellulose, and supports stable attachment of diverse bioactive agents, including antibacter

Sustainable superhydrophobic nanocellulose coatings derived from Gelidium amansii waste via DES extraction and one-pot functionalization.

Gelidium amansii, a red alga widely utilized for industrial agar production, generates significant residual biomass that is often discarded, leading to resource waste and environmental pollution. This research investigates the valorization of Gelidium amansii waste through the development of superhydrophobic materials. High-purity cellulose was extracted using a choline chloride-lactic acid deep eutectic solvent (DES), achieving a yield of 61.17% under optimized conditions (solid-liquid ratio 1:10, 100 °C, 4 h). The extracted cellulose was converted into TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TONC) via

Transparent Ionic Skin: Minimal [EMIM]Cl Enhances Nanocellulose Hydrogel Conductivity for Superior Wearable Sensing.

Growing focus on health and quality of life is driving increasing demand for skin-like wearable sensors in human motion monitoring and healthcare. Unlike traditional e-skin, ionic skin utilizes a polymer network scaffold with mobile ions, effectively overcoming the issue of poor dispersion of conductive fillers in polymer matrices. As an ionic liquid with facile synthesis and low cost, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIM]Cl) forms strong interactions with both polymers and water molecules. Cellulose is a natural polymeric material with advantages such as low cost, environmental friendl

Inhibition of the Peroxygenase Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenase by Carboxylic Acids and Amino Acids.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are widely distributed in fungi, and catalyze the oxidative degradation of polysaccharides such as cellulose. Despite their name, LPMOs possess a dominant peroxygenase activity that is reflected in high turnover numbers but also causes deactivation. We report on the influence of small molecules and ions on the activity and stability of LPMO during catalysis. Turbidimetric and photometric assays were used to identify LPMO inhibitors and measure their inhibitory effect. Selected inhibitors were employed to study LPMO activity and stability during cellu

Aerogels from copper (II)-cellulose nanofibers and carbon nanotubes as absorbents for the elimination of toxic gases from air.

A novel deodorizer that is capable of selectively eliminating the odorous chemicals, such as ammonia, trimethylamine, hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, is described. The deodorizer is a nanostructured aerogel by nature, consisting of 2,2-6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), transition metal divalent cations (M2+), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) as the constitutive elements. CNF are firstly mixed with M2+ (M2+, in this paper, typifies Ni2+, Co2+ and Cu2+) to form CNF-M2+ complexes, monodispersed CNT is then mixed to prepare CNT/CNF-M2+ wat

Potential of tadalafil and tadalafil-cellulose nanocomposite in preventing postsurgical abdominal adhesions in a rat cecal abrasion model.

The formation of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions is a significant challenge in veterinary practice worldwide. Thus, several attempts have been made to identify agents that prevent the occurrence of these postsurgical adhesions. However, finding an ideal and effective agent remains a challenge. Herein, we investigate the potential of tadalafil and tadalafil/cellulose composite as promising therapeutics for preventing postsurgical intra-abdominal adhesions. A cecal abrasion model was established in 30 rats, which either left untreated or treated with tadalafil, cellulose, or tadalafil/ce

Dioxin and dibenzofuran like molecular analogues from the pyrolysis of biomass materials-the emerging challenge in bio-oil production.

INTRODUCTION: The aggressive search for renewable energy resources and essential pyrosynthetic compounds has marked an exponential rise in the thermal degradation of biomass materials. Consequently, clean and sustainable transport fuels are increasingly desirable in a highly industrialized economy, for energy security and environmental protection. For this reason, biomass materials have been identified as promising alternatives to fossil fuels despite the challenges resulting from the possible formation of toxic nitrogen-based molecules during biomass degradation. In order to understand the fr

In situ synthesis of antibacterial regenerated cellulose films via cellulose-assisted reduction and stabilization of silver nanoparticles.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely employed in antimicrobial materials owing to their broad-spectrum and long-lasting antibacterial activity. Herein, a facile and environmentally friendly in situ strategy is proposed for the fabrication of antibacterial regenerated cellulose films (RCFs) via the in situ synthesis of finely dispersed AgNPs. Cellulose was dissolved in an aqueous N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide solvent, which activated the abundant hydroxyl functionalities along the cellulose backbones, enabling the reduction of Ag+ ions to Ag and the simultaneous immobilization of AgNPs within t

Sustainable Cellulose Nanofibers-Mediated Synthesis of Uniform Spinel Zn-Ferrites Nanocorals for High Performances in Supercapacitors.

Spinel ferrites are versatile, low-cost, and abundant metal oxides with remarkable electronic and magnetic properties, which find several applications. Among them, they have been considered part of the next generation of electrochemical energy storage materials due to their variable oxidation states, low environmental toxicity, and possible synthesis through simple green chemical processing. However, most traditional procedures lead to the formation of poorly controlled materials (in terms of size, shape, composition, and/or crystalline structure). Thus, we report herein a cellulose nanofibers

MOF-derived FeMnCo-O4@cellulose aerogel: A synergistic breakthrough in tetracycline degradation.

The persistent contamination of aquatic systems by antibiotics necessitates advanced catalytic solutions. This work reports a high-efficiency composite comprising spinel-phase trimetallic oxides (Fe3O4/Mn3O4/Co3O4) derived from Trimetallic MOF precursor, embedded in a cellulose aerogel (CA) matrix (FeMnCo-O4@CA), for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Under optimized conditions, the catalyst achieves 99.8 % tetracycline (TC) degradation within 15 min. With a mineralization efficiency of >90 %. Synergistic radical (SO4•-, •OH and O2•-) and non-radical (1O2) pathways dominate TC oxidation, driv

Postoperative Textiloma Mimicking Intracranial Rebleeding in a Patient with Spontaneous Hemorrhage: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

During craniotomy, hemostatic materials such as oxidized cellulose and cotton pads, commonly used to control bleeding, may cause a granulomatous reaction that may produce space-occupying mass lesions termed textiloma (or gossypiboma). We present a 46-year-old female who underwent a right frontotemporal craniotomy and surgical removal of intraparenchymal cerebral hemorrhage, and who developed a textiloma during the postoperative period causing seizures. Granulomatous reactions due to hemostatic agents have been reported experimentally, as well as after cranial and spinal operations. We emphasiz
