The study concerned 13 cases of angio-immunoblastic lymphadenopathy. This systemic lymphoid disorder has been identified only recently and is surely more common than has been thought. It is characterised by specific changes in the lymph nodes, which are infiltrated by plasmocytic and immunoblastic cells, associated with a marked degree of vascular neogenesis. This anatomical involvement is accompanied by numerous immunological manifestations, the most important of which are a positive Coombs test and a polyclonal hyperimmunoglobulinaemia. Despite the severe course of the disorder, its benign o…

Studies were carried out on eight patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Four patients were found to have a haemolytic anaemia; one had Coombs red cell antibodies. Two patients had evidence of splenic sequestration of red cells using the radio-chromium technique. There was a significant correlation between the red cell survival and the bromsulphthalein retention test and the red cell survival and the serum level of bilirubin. It was concluded that the anaemia of cirrhosis of the liver, including primary biliary cirrhosis, may be due to a number of mechanisms and a unifying hypothesis based o

BACKGROUND: We describe here the first patient with recurrent hemolysis related to disinfectant containing silver nanoparticles (AgNps).
METHODS: A 58-year-old chemist repeatedly experienced DAT-negative (Coombs-negative) hemolysis during the last 5 years. He was treated with a number of immunosuppressive drugs including 18 times rituximab. The attempt to treat him with cyclosporine A served only to increase the rate of hemolysis. Only by chance, we revealed that the patient regularly used a hand disinfectant containing AgNps. Serological testing was performed using standard techniques. Erypt

Progressive Disseminated Histoplasmosis (PDH) is mainly described in immuno-compromised individuals and rare in immuno-competent subjects. Here we report a case of progressive disseminated histoplasmosis with Comb's positive hemolytic anemia, which is infrequently reported from a country like India where histoplasmosis is not an endemic mycosis.

We report on a 74-year-old male patient who presented with jaundice, highly increased unconjugated bilirubin and slight nonregenerative anemia. Ferrokinetic studies demonstrated ineffective erythropoiesis and red cell survival, studied by 51 Cr, showed moderately increased hemolysis. Other findings showed no evidence of an underlying myelodysplastic syndrome but strongly favored the autoimmune origin of the disorder, with immunologic destruction of erythroblasts (and to a far lesser extent erythrocytes) by autoantibodies.

We studied an acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) due to sulfamethoxazol in a 48-year-old woman with unusual findings in allergy testing. The histological picture provided evidence for a pustular drug eruption and leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Skin testing with sulfamethoxazol was negative for immediate-type reaction (scratch test) and delayed-type reaction (epicutaneous testing). A lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) showed a significant lymphocyte stimulation (stimulation index 5.04/2.61) toward sulfamethoxazol (200/100 mg/ml) by measuring the rate of built-in tritium-thymidine

The differential diagnosis of anemia must consider immune hemolytic anemias as a frequent cause. Whereas detection of anti-red blood cell (RBC) alloantibodies frequently induced by immunogenic stimuli (transfusion, pregnancy) is performed by routine serology, diagnosing autoimmune hemolytic anemias or drug-induced hemolytic anemias remains a challenge, usually requiring close collaboration of a number of disciplines. Positive direct antiglobulin test (Coombs' test) represents a central criterion in diagnosing immune hemolytic anemias, leading to further detailed analyses. The most-severe type

We encountered a 65-year-old female with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and mitral valve prolapse who had infective endocarditis and hemolytic anemia. The infecting organism of endocarditis was group A streptococci. With regard to the etiology of the hemolytic anemia, fragmentation hemolysis was considered because fragmented red cells and elevated lactic dehydrogenase were observed. Haptoglobin was markedly decreased. Coombs' test, Ham's test and abnormal hemoglobin were negative. She had not had a hemolytic attack in the past. Ultrasonic cardiography showed asymmetrical septal hypert

Allergy to penicillin can occur via any of the 4 types of Gel-Coombs hypersensitivity reactions, producing distinct clinical histories and physical examination findings. Treatments include penicillin discontinuation, and depending on the type of reaction, epinephrine, antihistamines, and/or glucocorticoids. Most beta-lactams may be safely used in penicillin-allergic patients, with the possible exception of first-generation and second-generation cephalosporins. Penicillin testing includes skin testing, patch testing, and graded challenge. The selection of the type of testing depends on the clin

Six immunologic tests were conducted on a large population of dogs with a variety of diseases. The test results were analyzed retrospectively and correlated to the clinical and final pathologic diagnoses. The results indicated that rheumatoid factor and the direct antiglobulin (Coombs) test were both sensitive and specific for the diagnoses of canine rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The antinuclear antibody test was useful in supporting the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) only when both antibody titer and the staining pattern were taken into consideration.

An indirect ELISA was adapted to measure individual classes of anti-phosphatidylcholine (PC) antibodies in patients with brucellosis; a comparison was made with patients with other infectious diseases and healthy human controls. Immunoconjugates of alpha, gamma or mu chain specificity were used. The results were compared with those of conventional tests for brucella antibodies, Rose Bengal, microagglutination (MAT) and Coombs tests, as well as with VDRL. The results indicated that although all sera from patients with brucellosis were VDRL negative, 97% of them (30 of 31) had higher levels of I…

Visceral leishmaniasis is a common tropical infection presenting with a myriad of hematological abnormalities. We report an unusual case of an 11-year-old girl suffering from a febrile illness with hepatosplenomegaly and anemia. Laboratory findings included pancytopenia and hyperbilirubinemia. The leishmania antigen rK39 was positive and bone marrow examination revealed hemophagocytosis and amastigote forms of Leishmania donovani. Direct Coombs' test was positive (warm type, IgG) and LDH was elevated. Tests for other infections were negative. A diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis with autoimmu

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia secondary to bee envenomation developed in 2 dogs. Clinical signs included lethargy, hematuria, ataxia, and seizures; 1 dog died. Clinicopathologic data included nonregenerative anemia, spherocytosis, positive results for Coombs' test, and occult hematuria. Treatment included oral administration of corticosteroids at immunosuppressive dosages and supportive care. The surviving dog initially responded to corticosteroids, but hemolysis recurred as the dosage was tapered. Hemolysis resolved with prolonged administration of corticosteroids. Bee venom contains hyalu
