PHACES syndrome with congenital hypothyroidism.

The acronym PHACE syndrome stands for Posterior fossa malformations, Hemangiomas, Arterial anomalies, Coarctation of the aorta and other cardiac defects, Eye abnormalities, Sternal clefting and/or a supraumbilical raphe. We report a 20 day old neonate who presented with a large facial hemangioma and Dandy-Walker cyst. This case is unusual because the cyst was detected antenatally and there was associated congenital hypothyroidism, which has been described very rarely with this condition.

A new lethal chondrodysplasia with spondylocostal dysostosis, multiple internal anomalies and Dandy-Walker cyst.

We describe here a female infant, exhibiting lethal short-limbed dwarfism. The condition superficially resembled achondrogenesis. However, unlike achondrogenesis there was an associated severe spondylocostal dysostosis and major non-skeletal anomalies, particularly a cerebellar Dandy-Walker cyst, cardiovascular and urogenital malformations. The chondroosseous morphology was nonspecific. The case is believed to be unique. It is therefore suggested that this constellation of anomalies constitutes a "new" lethal syndrome, different from the delineated chondrodysplasias.

Aicardi's syndrome; radiologic manifestations.

Features of Aicardi's syndrome include infantile spasms associated with pathognomonic chorioretinopathy, abnormalities of the corpus callosum with heterotopia of gray matter, and characteristic electroencephalographic findings. Vertebral abnormalities are also part of the syndrome, which is apparently limited to female infants. Subnormal mental development appears in all cases. It was first described in 1969 in French. Isolated cases in the literature have been associated with facial asymmetry, plagiocephaly, and the Dandy-Walker syndrome. Experience with two patients suggests that a search fo…

Semilobar holoprosencephaly, coronal craniosynostosis, and multiple congenital anomalies: a severe expression of the Genoa syndrome or a newly recognized syndrome?

We report on a female newborn with holoprosencephaly, craniosynostosis, and multiple congenital anomalies including cloverleaf skull, Dandy-Walker malformation, bilateral microphthalmia, cleft soft palate, congenital scoliosis, hypoplastic nails and coarctation of aorta. Some of these features are consistent with the diagnosis of the Genoa syndrome, (MIM 601370) a rare autosomal recessive disorder recently described. The findings of other serious and previously undescribed malformations, however, raises the possibility of a newly recognized disorder.

Enlarged fetal cisterna magna: appearance and significance.

The differential diagnosis of a posterior fossa fluid collection in the fetus includes an enlarged cisterna magna, Dandy-Walker syndrome, or a posterior fossa cyst, each of which has differing implications for perinatal management. Causes of an enlarged cisterna magna include cerebellar hypoplasia, communicating hydrocephalus, and normal variation. Cerebellar hypoplasia is a frequent finding in the trisomies and therefore a careful search should be made for associated cardiac anomalies, growth retardation, and polyhydramnios.

Hydromyelia in the dog.

Hydromyelia is a dilation of the spinal cord central canal. In man this may be due to congenital malformations such as Dandy-Walker syndrome and Chiari malformations or may be acquired as result of infection, trauma or neoplasia. In dogs hydromyelia may be accidentally diagnosed during routine cisterna magna myelography. Hydromyelia, and its possible etiology, may be confirmed by means of computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Three dogs with hydromyelia due to differing etiologies are described.

Cobblestone-like brain dysgenesis and altered glycosylation in congenital cutis laxa, Debre type.

OBJECTIVE: To delineate a new syndrome of brain dysgenesis and cutis laxa based on the description of 11 patients belonging to nine unrelated families recruited through an international collaboration effort. METHODS: Careful clinical assessment of patients from birth to the age of 23 years with follow-up studies ranging from 3 to 20 years. Biochemical studies of serum proteins glycosylation by isoelectric focusing and capillary zone electrophoresis were performed in 10 patients. Brain MRI studies using conventional methods were analyzed in eight patients. RESULTS: An expanded clinical spectr

The Goldston syndrome: report of a case.

We present a case of the Goldston syndrome--that is, cystic renal dysplasia and the Dandy-Walker malformation. The condition was diagnosed by ultrasound in a 635 g fetus in the seventeenth week of gestation. Ultrasound studies showed the fetal head to be somewhat enlarged with slight dilatation of the lateral ventricles and marked dilatation of the fourth ventricle. The kidneys were symmetrically enlarged and multicystic. Autopsy revealed evidence of the oligohydramnios syndrome. The kidneys were typical of the Goldston syndrome as were the microscopic lesions in the liver. To our knowledge th

MRI and multiplanar 3D ultrasound compared in the prenatal assessment of enlarged posterior fossa.

Our aim was to compare the diagnostic capabilities of the multiplanar mode of 3D ultrasound (3D US) and MRI in the assessment of a fetal enlarged cisterna magna. Two fetuses showing an enlarged posterior fossa by conventional two-dimensional ultrasound at 24 and 29 weeks of pregnancy were assessed using both diagnostic methods. One fetus was found to have Dandy-Walker syndrome malformation. In the other, the syndrome was ruled out using both methods. Our results suggest that multiplanar 3D US is able to achieve similar results as does MRI when observing the fetal brain.

Neurocutaneous melanocytosis.

Neurocutaneous melanosis or neurocutaneous melanocytosis is a rare sporadic congenital disorder characterized by the presence of giant and/or multiple satellite congenital melanocytic nevi in the skin and benign melanocytic pigmentation of the leptomeninges. These two defining features were recognized more than a century ago. A third characteristic feature is proliferative nodules arising from giant nevi. The etiology is unknown, but neurocutaneous melanosis is considered a developmental disorder of melanocyte precursors from neural crest. The distinctive unique distribution of the congenital

Autosomal recessive eye and brain anomalies: Warburg syndrome.

Two siblings are reported who appear to have an autosomal recessive disorder of eye and central nervous system anomalies. The findings in fourteen previously described and similarly affected patients are summarized. Ocular anomalies include microphthalmos, megalocornea, the Peter anomaly, cataract, coloboma, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, and retinal detachment with retinal dysplasia. Central nervous system malformations include agyria-pachygyria, cerebellar dysplasia, encephalocele, Dandy-Walker cyst, and hydrocephalus. We suggest that this disorder be known as Warburg syndrome.

P253 Next-generation phenotyping facilitates the identification of structural brain malformations in rare disorders through computational brain MRI analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Many rare disorders, particularly neurodevelopmental conditions, manifest structural brain malformations. Just as dysmorphologists rely on facial gestalt recognition to identify syndromes, radiologists and neurologists face similar challenges in identifying the "brain gestalt" of rare disorders-especially when encountering rare conditions or those they have not previously seen. Next-generation phenotyping (NGP) has been proven capable of supporting clinicians in recognizing facial dysmorphic patterns associated with the underlying syndrome through training on thousands of patient

Dandy-Walker malformation in a bovine Angus calf: case report and literature review.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a rarely reported constellation of congenital cerebellar and skull abnormalities that, in humans, traditionally includes cerebellar vermis hypoplasia (or agenesis), a malformed dilated and often cystic fourth ventricle and enlargement of the posterior cranial fossa (caudal cranial fossa in veterinary species). This combination of anomalies commonly causes hydrocephalus, leading to neurological signs. DWM is thought to arise from disrupted embryogenesis of the rhombencephalic alar plate, either spontaneously or following teratogenic exposure. Secondary anomali

Not Dandy Walker variant: a review of prominent retrocerebellar CSF space in children.

The prominent retrocerebellar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) space can be frequently encountered on paediatric neuroimaging studies. In cases involving abnormal vermian development where imaging does not align with the established criteria of Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM), the term "Dandy-Walker variant or continuum" has been historically employed to describe the aberrant posterior fossa development. Instead, the emphasis is on a more elaborate description of the findings in the posterior fossa. Moreover, combining the findings in the supratentorial brain can occasionally predict certain neurogen

Dandy-Walker malformation and syringomyelia: a rare association.

PURPOSE: Dandy-Walker malformation is a rare condition due to imperforation of the Blake's pouch during intrauterine brain development, usually leading to early severe hydrocephalus. The association with holocord syringomyelia is rare, and from the Gardner's first report in 1957, only 23 cases have been described, mostly from autopsy series and pre-MRI period. Besides a worsening of clinical picture, its occurrence generates some concern about the best surgical treatment that varies widely among the literature reports. METHODS: An 11-year-old girl with Dandy-Walker malformation presented with

[Congenital generalized lipodystrophy in a patient with Dandy Walker anomaly].

The objective of this study is to describe the unexpected association between the congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) and Dandy Walker anomaly. We report the case of a 1-year-old infant who was hospitalized at her fourth month of life with Dandy Walker anomaly diagnosis and an increased social risk. During her hospitalization, she developed progressively: acromegaloid aspect, triangular fascia, hirsutism, lipoatrophy, muscle hypertrophy, clitoromegaly, abdominal distention, progressive hepatomegaly, and hypertriglyceridemia. This led to the clinical diagnosis of congenital generalized l

Cerebellocele and associated central nervous system anomalies in the Meckel syndrome.

Three cases with the Meckel syndrome were autopsied and found to have: arhinencephaly , polymicrogyria , aqueductal stenosis, heterotopia of glial tissue, hypoplasia or agenesis of the cerebellar vermis, cranium bifidum associated with large occipital ventriculocele and others. The anomalies at the level of posterior fossa in this condition are classified as those belonging to the Chiari type III group of anomalies. This unusual set of anomalies which forms pathogenetic link between the Dandy-Walker and Chiari-Arnold group of anomalies in the posterior fossa seems to be very frequent in the Me

Congenital Melanocytic Nevi Syndrome With Leptomeningeal Melanoma.

The incidence of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMNs) is 1% to 6% for small- to intermediate-size nevi to 1 in 500,000 for giant size nevi. Large and satellite CMNs are known to be associated with neurocutaneous melanosis and central nervous system malformations such as Dandy-Walker malformation, defects of the vertebra-skull, and intraspinal lipomas. We hereby present a case of CMN syndrome in an 18-year-old girl with leptomeningeal melanoma, evaluated with MRI, adequately staged, and screened with FDG PET.
