Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI) can yield important information on the in vivo pathological processes affecting water diffusion. The aim of this study was to quantitatively define water diffusion in normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) distant from the plaque, in the plaque, and around the plaque, and to investigate the correlation of these changes with clinical disability. Conventional MRI and DTI scans were conducted in 30 patients with MS and 15 healthy individuals. Fractional

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) has found ischemic lesions in the brain after cardiac surgery. However, preoperative cerebral injury has not been studied closely. In this study, we used DWI to assess the prevalence of abnormalities in patients scheduled for cardiac surgery.
METHODS: We used conventional magnetic resonance imaging and DWI to study 247 consecutive patients scheduled for elective cardiac surgery. Clinical characteristics, neuropsychological test performance, and radiographic data were collected and compared with a group of patients who had normal

BACKGROUND: Recent concepts about cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation in communicating hydrocephalus (CoHy), which is also termed "restricted arterial pulsation hydrocephalus," suggest reduced arterial pulsations of subarachnoid vessels with a smaller amount of CSF shifted in subarachnoid spaces during the early systole. The postulated restriction of subarachnoid arterial pulsations in CoHy should induce a smaller motion artifact and reduced local stream effects in CSF in magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).
PURPOSE: To investigate the maximum diffusivity in CSF in pati

A multimodal MR study including relaxometry, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and MR spectroscopy was performed on patients with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) and matched controls, to improve our understanding of white matter (WM) lesions. Relaxometry yields information on myelin loss or malformation and may substantiate results from DTI attributed to myelin changes. Relaxometry was used to determine four brain compartments in normal-appearing brain tissue (NABT) and in lesions: water in myelin bilayers (myelin water, MW), water in gray matter (GM), water in WM, and water with long relaxation

A 30-year-old man presented with a generalized seizure manifesting as decreased consciousness. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed transient areas of high intensity in the gray and subcortical white matter of the left occipital and temporal lobes. The lesions did not reflect the vascular territories. After a period of over 2 weeks, his consciousness level improved associated with reduced intensity of the abnormal areas. These findings suggest that seizure induced reversible cytotoxic and vasogenic edema. Transient diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities may

We compared the results of two procedures to protect against distal embolism caused by embolic debris from carotid angioplasty with stent deployment (CAS) using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study group comprised 39 men and 3 women (42 and 3 CAS procedures, respectively) with severe carotid stenosis (average age 70.0 +/- 6.6 years). During 20 CAS procedures the internal carotid artery was protected with a single balloon. A PercuSurge GuardWire was used for temporary occlusion. During 25 CAS procedures the internal and external carotid arteries were simultaneously tem

A 68-year-old man developed right homonymous hemianopic paracentral scotomas from acute infarction of the left extrastriate area. He was studied over the ensuing 12 months with visual fields, conventional MRI, functional MRI (fMRI), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). As the visual field defect became smaller, fMRI demonstrated progressively larger areas of cortical activation. DTI initially showed that the lesioned posterior optic radiations were completely interrupted. This interruption lessened in time and had disappeared by one year after onset. fMRI and DTI are innovative measures to foll

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: White matter (WM) abnormality in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been less well characterized than cortical damage. We studied the spatial distribution of the subcortical WM abnormality using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one AD patients and seven healthy, elderly subjects were included. DWIs were obtained using a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-nulled pulse sequence to reduce the partial volume contamination of CSF signal. Diffusivity in the subcortical WM voxels was mapped onto the cortical surface using original software

The precise mechanism of neurological symptoms in patients with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is still controversial. The diffusion weighted MR findings at the acute phase of a neurological event in MELAS are described and the pathophysiology of stroke-like lesion in the light of diffusion changes is discussed. Brain MRI was performed 2 days after the sudden onset of cortical blindness in a 25 year old patient with MELAS. Fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images showed multifocal cortical and subcortical hyperintensities loc

The precise characterization of cortical connectivity is important for the understanding of brain morphological and functional organization. Such connectivity is conveyed by specific pathways or tracts in the white matter. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging detects the diffusivity of water molecules in three dimensions. Diffusivity is anisotropic in oriented tissues such as fiber tracts. In the present study, we used this method to map (in terms of orientation, location, and size) the "stem" (compact portion) of the principal association, projection, and commissural white matter pat

A new pulse sequence for in vivo diffusion measurements by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is introduced. The pulse sequence was tested on phantoms to evaluate the accuracy, reproducibility and inplane variations. The sensitivity of the sequence was tested by measuring the self diffusion coefficient of water with different temperatures. This phantom study showed that the water self diffusion could be measured accurately and that the inplane deviation was less than +/- 10 per cent. Seven healthy volunteers were studied with a 10 mm thick slice through the lateral ventricles, clear differences

We describe a case of 70-year-old man with type 2 diabetes and myelodysplastic syndrome progressing to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who presented with rapidly worsening kidney function. Although computed tomography imaging of the patient's kidneys was unremarkable, subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed high signal intensity on diffusion-weighted imaging and low signal intensity on the apparent diffusion coefficient map in the kidneys. A kidney biopsy from the region that exhibited abnormal findings on MRI showed blast cell infiltration within the kidney capsule and proximal tubule

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) allows for the interrogation of tissue cellularity, which is a surrogate for cellular proliferation. Previous attempts to incorporate DWI into the workflow of a 0.35 T MR-linac (MRL) have lacked quantitative accuracy. In this study, accuracy, repeatability, and geometric precision of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps produced using an echo planar imaging (EPI)-based DWI protocol on the MRL system is illustrated, and in vivo potential for longitudinal patient imaging is demonstrated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Accuracy and repeatabil
