A 59-year-old man showed slowly progressive intentional tremor for 40 years prior to first visit to us in 1996. He was exposed to mercury vapor for about 3 years (1956-1959) and the diagnosis of chronic inorganic mercury poisoning was made. Hasegawa dementia scale-revised (HDS-R), mini-mental state (MMS) examination and P300 examination were performed. HDS-R and MMS were within normal range but the latency of P300 was remarkably prolonged. His tremor was considered to be due to chronic inorganic poisoning because there were no other causes and the frequency of his tremor was 3-4 Hz. which was

Reduced P300 amplitude is reliably found in individuals with a personal or family history of alcohol problems. However, alcoholism is part of a broader externalizing spectrum that includes other substance use and antisocial disorders. We hypothesized that reduced P300 is an indicator of the common factor that underlies disorders within this spectrum. Community males (N=969) were assessed at age 17 in a visual oddball task. Externalizing was defined as the common factor underlying symptoms of alcohol dependence, drug dependence, nicotine dependence, conduct disorder, and adult antisocial behavi

OBJECTIVES: Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded to investigate allocation of attention in adult developmental dyslexics.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twelve adult developmental dyslexics and 12 matched normal controls performed three visual choice reaction tasks. In the passive oddball condition, subjects watched two different simple visual stimuli presented with 87.5 and 12.5% probability. In the active oddball condition, participants responded to the low-probability target stimulus. In the active 50/50-condition, both stimuli were presented with 50% probability and a response was r

Electroencephalography (EEG) measures neural activation due to various cognitive processes. EEG and event-related potentials (ERPs) are widely used in studies investigating psychopathology and neural substrates of psychiatric diseases in children and adolescents. The present study aimed to review recent ERP studies in child and adolescent psychiatry. ERPs are non-invasive methods for studying synaptic functions in the brain. ERP might be a candidate biomarker in child-adolescent psychiatry, considering its ability to reflect cognitive and behavioral functions in humans. For the EEG study of ps

This study aimed at examining how social distance modulates costly prosocial behaviors in the gain (i.e., helping another win a good outcome) and loss contexts (i.e., helping another avoid a bad outcome). To this end, participants were instructed to choose between two lotteries - One of the two lotteries was costly to their payment and always better than the other, which would result in the other person having a greater chance of ending up with more money - to give another person (a friend or a stranger) in the gain or loss context while electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded. The behavior

Although previous studies have shown that task performance is affected by others' presence and (the consequences of) others' actions, it is unclear how task performance varies in different social situations and the role that sex plays in it. In the present study, we investigated sex differences in the evaluation processing of another person's outcomes in both cooperative and competitive contexts. We recorded the event-related potentials (ERPs) of 72 normal adults who played a gambling task with a partner or against an opponent. The behavioral results indicate that males take longer to make dec

BACKGROUND: Auditory input is known to modulate the perception of pain, yet the reciprocal influence, how pain affects auditory processing, remains less well understood. We investigated how continuous tonic pain dynamically alters auditory cortical responses in humans.
METHODS: Using a three-stimulus auditory oddball paradigm combined with EEG, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants experienced thermal stimulation under three conditions: baseline, non-painful warmth, and pain. We examined multiple stages of auditory processing, including early sensory encoding (N1, P2)

Although contemporary models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have primarily emphasized fear, recent accounts suggest that abnormal disgust learning may also contribute to OCD pathology, particularly in contamination-related OCD (C-OCD). The present study examined the neural correlates of disgust learning in individuals with elevated contamination-related obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while 28 participants high in contamination-related obsessive-compulsive symptoms (HC) and 30 participants low in such symptoms (LC) completed disgust acquisit

Magnitude is a critical feature of outcomes. In the present study, two event-related potential (ERP) experiments were implemented to explore the neural substrates of outcome magnitude processing. In Experiment 1, we used an adapted gambling paradigm where physical area symbols were set to represent potential relative outcome magnitudes in order to exclude the possibility that the participants would be ignorant of the magnitudes. The context was manipulated as total monetary amount: ¥4 and ¥40. In these two contexts, the relative outcome magnitudes were ¥1 versus ¥3, and ¥10 versus ¥30, respect

Measuring of the amplitude of auditory cognitive evoked potentials P300 showed its changes (decrease and increase) in patients with panic disorders compared to healthy individuals. The authors hypothesize that the decrease in P300 amplitude reflects increased activity of the cerebral reticulothalamic structures, while its increase is associated with activation of the septohippocampal limbic system in patients with panic disorders. P300 recording can serve as a valuable diagnostic method.

In recent years, commercial lightweight electroencephalography (EEG) headsets are gaining popularity in neuroscience. These devices commonly utilize only a few dry electrodes in specific locations and signal quality is often inferior compared to that of their traditional counterparts. In this study, we wanted to assess the feasibility of portable, paste-less, passive electrode-based EEG headset MindRove vision (VSN) for laboratory use. Three paradigms were implemented for acquiring visual evoked potential (VEP), P300 event-related potential and motor execution task (ME) related cortical patter

Response inhibition deficits have often been described in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet, research on response inhibition in OCD focusses on "top-down" controlled mechanisms, and it has been neglected that response inhibition performance depends on the interplay of controlled and automatic processes during response selection. Based on pathophysiological considerations we test the counterintuitive hypothesis that OCD patients show superior inhibitory control when automatic mechanisms govern processes involved in response inhibition. We examined a group of adolescent OCD patients (n =

Purpose The main purpose of the study is to explore the auditory selective attention abilities (using event-related potentials) and the neuronal oscillatory activity in the default mode network sites (using electroencephalogram [EEG]) in individuals with tinnitus. Method Auditory selective attention was measured using P300, and the resting state EEG was assessed using the default mode function analysis. Ten individuals with continuous and bothersome tinnitus along with 10 age- and gender-matched control participants underwent event-related potential testing and 5 min of EEG recording (at wakef

The feedback negativity (FN) has been shown to reflect the binary evaluation of possible outcomes in a context-dependent manner, but it is unclear whether context dependence is based on global or local alternatives. A cued gambling task was used to examine whether the FN is sensitive to possible outcomes on a given trial, or the range of outcomes across trials. On 50% of trials, participants could break even or lose money; on remaining trials, participants could win or break even. Breaking even was an unfavorable outcome relative to all possibilities in the current task, but the best possible

This study explores visual event-related potentials components in a group of poor readers (PRs) and control children who carried out figure and word categorization tasks. In both tasks, every child had to categorize between animal and non-animal stimuli in an odd-ball GO-GO paradigm. During the word categorization task, PRs presented longer reaction times, a poorer performance, longer and larger P2 amplitudes, and smaller amplitudes and longer P300 latencies than controls. There were no differences in the N400 component between groups. These results suggest that semantic processing underachiev

INTRODUCTION: Event-related potentials (ERPs) are used to investigate neuropsychological dysfunction; however, the relationship between ERPs and apathy in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains underexplored. We aimed to examine the association between ERP latency and amplitude and apathy in patients with PD.
METHODS: Auditory ERP components (N100, N200, and P300) were recorded using an oddball paradigm. Patients with PD were divided into apathy and non-apathy groups, and group differences in ERP measures were analyzed. Multivariable regression and correlation analyses were conducted to examine the

PURPOSE: Primary Sjogren syndrome (PSS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by symptoms of a dry mouth and eyes, in which other organs and systems are widely involved. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in PSS is reported in a wide range between 2.5-60%. The reason is that the clinical picture can remain asymptomatic despite the presence of CNS involvement in the disease process. In this study, our aim was to evaluate subclinical cognitive impairment in patients with PSS by investigating P300 potential parameters.
METHOD: Forty-three female patients with PSS (mean age: 52.6 ± 11.4 ye
