[Fathers' Experiences of Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum During the Covid 19 Pandemic].

INTRODUCTION: In order to reduce the possible risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2, access restrictions have been introduced in all areas of public life. In extra- and intramural health care facilities, these measures also affect pregnant women, women giving birth, and women who have recently given birth as well as their partners. The aim of this study is to collect and reflect on the experiences of expectant fathers against the background of pandemic-related restrictions. METHOD: Following a qualitative study design, 11 guided interviews with fathers who experienced a birth during the Covid 19 pa…

Effects of vasopressin on neural processing of infant crying in expectant fathers.

In a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject magnetic resonance imaging study, we examined the effect of 20 IU intranasal vasopressin on the neural processing of infant crying in 25 fathers-to-be. We explored whether familial background modulates vasopressin effects, and whether vasopressin differentially affects cry processing coupled with neutral or emotional contextual information. Participants listened to cries accompanied by neutral ('this is an infant') or emotional ('this infant is sick/bored') contextual information, and neutral control sounds ('this is a saw'). Ad…

Concealed concern: fathers' experiences of having a child with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Despite increased research into families of chronically ill children, more needs to be known about the father's experience. We address this issue through asking: 'What is it like to be the father of a child with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis?' (JIA). Four members of eight families with an adolescent diagnosed with JIA, including seven fathers, were interviewed and transcripts analysed using grounded theory. This study suggests that fathers of children with JIA experience several severe losses which are exacerbated through comparisons they make between their own situation and that of fathers of…

Increased frequency of reproductive health problems among fathers of boys with hypospadias.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have suggested an association between paternal subfertility and hypospadias among their sons, although the association has not been systematically investigated. We therefore compared male reproductive health among a group of fathers of boys with hypospadias and a group of fathers to normal children. METHODS: A total of 64 fathers of boys with hypospadias participated; 349 partners of pregnant women served as a control group. All men delivered a semen sample, had a blood sample drawn, underwent a physical examination and completed a questionnaire. RESULTS: Fathers of …

Does individual treatment for alcoholic fathers benefit their children? A longitudinal assessment.

Psychosocial adjustment in children of alcoholics (COAs; N=125) was examined before and at 3 follow-ups in the 15 months after their fathers entered alcoholism treatment. Before their fathers' treatment, COAs exhibited greater overall and clinical-level symptomatology than children from the demographically matched comparison sample, but they improved significantly following their fathers' treatment. Children of stably remitted fathers were similar to their demographic counterparts from the comparison sample and had fewer adjustment problems than children of relapsed fathers, even after account…

Breastfeeding in Bristol: teaching good positioning, and support from fathers and families.

OBJECTIVES: to determine whether a specific 'hands-off' breastfeeding technique, based on the physiology of suckling and clinical experience, if taught to mothers in the immediate postnatal period, improves their chances of breastfeeding successfully and reduces the incidence of problems. To investigate the factors associated with breastfeeding at two and six weeks postpartum using logistic regression analysis. DESIGN: a non-randomised prospective cohort phased intervention study. SETTING: subjects recruited from one postnatal ward in St. Michael's Hospital, Bristol from October 1996 to Nove

Father's involvement in child feeding and associated factors among fathers having children aged 6-24 months in Jinka town, Ethiopia, 2024.

Child feeding practices are crucial for child health, growth, and development. Fathers have a vital role in optimal child-feeding practices, while traditional cultural norms dictate that men are responsible for family finances and leadership, and women are responsible for child care. Hence, this study aimed to assess father involvement in child feeding and associated factors among fathers having children aged 6-24 months in Jinka Town. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinka town from January 1 to February 15, 2024, on 415 randomly selected study participants. Pre-tested…

Drinks of the father: father's maximum number of drinks consumed predicts externalizing disorders, substance use, and substance use disorders in preadolescent and adolescent offspring.

BACKGROUND: The maximum number of drinks consumed in 24 hr seems to be an interesting phenotype related to alcoholism. The goal of the present study was to determine in an epidemiologic sample whether this measure of drinking history in fathers predicted externalizing behavioral disorders, substance use, and substance abuse in preadolescent and adolescent offspring and whether any such associations would be independent of paternal alcohol dependence diagnoses. METHODS: Subjects were male and female twins from both age cohorts of the Minnesota Twin Family Study, a population-based longitudinal…

5p13 microduplication in a malformed fetus and his unaffected father.

The 5p13 microduplication syndrome is a contiguous gene syndrome characterized by developmental delay intellectual disability, hypotonia, unusual facies with marked variability, mild limb anomalies, and in some cases brain malformations. The duplication ranges in size from 0.25 to 1.08 Mb and encompasses five genes (NIPBL, SLC1A3, CPLANE1, NUP155, and WDR70), of which NIPBL has been suggested to be the main dose sensitive gene. All patients with duplication of the complete NIPBL gene reported thus far have been de novo. Here, we report a 25-week-old male fetus with hypertelorism, wide and depr

The Effects of Father-Perpetration of Maltreatment on Adolescent Health Risk.

Maltreatment perpetrated by fathers may entail distinct characteristics and threats, and therefore differing effects from maltreatment perpetrated by mothers alone. This study examines the extent to which father perpetration of maltreatment is associated with variability in subsequent adolescent health outcomes relative to mother-alone maltreatment. A sample of youth (N = 377) with recently completed Child Protective Services investigations concerning reports of maltreatment attributed to fathers and/or mothers was drawn from the second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being. Youth…

Losing Thomas & Ella: A Father's Story (A Research Comic).

"Losing Thomas & Ella" presents a research comic about one father's perinatal loss of twins. The comic recounts Paul's experience of the hospital and the babies' deaths, and it details the complex grieving process afterward, including themes of anger, distance, relationship stress, self-blame, religious challenges, and resignation. A methodological appendix explains the process of constructing the comic and provides a rationale for the use of comics-based research for illness, death, and grief among practitioners, policy makers, and the bereaved.

A Case Report on Management of Father Daughter Incest with Schizophrenia.

Goltz syndrome: a rare case of father-to-daughter transmission.

An 8-year-old girl presented to us with skin-coloured to yellowish soft compressible papules, intermixed with hypopigmented and hyperpigmented macules in a Blaschkoid pattern, and 'lobster-claw deformity' affecting her bilateral feet. Additional examination findings included short stature, facial asymmetry, low-set ears, hypodontia, enamel hypoplasia, tonsillar enlargement and spina-bifida occulta at S1-3 vertebral level. A diagnosis of Goltz syndrome was suspected clinically, which was confirmed on skin biopsy. Her father also had hypopigmented and hyperpigmented macules in a Blaschkoid distr

[Parenting and children's aggression: are there differences in the influence of the father and the mother?].

Child rearing provides messages and rules that mediate the children's personality. These messages have a positive or negative influence on their behaviour. The objective of this empirical study was to analyse the relationship between physical and verbal aggression of sons and daughters and parenting style practiced by the father and the mother. The sample consisted of 2,788 students, aged 10 to 15 years, studying either the third cycle of Primary Education (44%) or the first cycle of Secondary Education (56%). Of them, 1,412 were boys (50.6%) and 1,375 were girls (49.3%). The results show that
