Uveal metastasis from carcinoid tumor. Clinical observations in nine cases.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoid tumor is a low-grade malignancy that usually arises in the gastrointestinal tract or bronchus and rarely metastasizes to the eye. Metastasis of carcinoid tumor to the uvea can be confused clinically with other primary and metastatic uveal tumors. METHODS: The authors reviewed the records of 410 consecutive patients with uveal metastases referred to the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital to identify those in whom carcinoid tumor was the primary neoplasm. The authors evaluated the clinical features of these metastases. RESULTS: Of 410 consecutive patients with

Pleomorphic lobular carcinoma in a cat: Clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical characterization.

Mammary carcinomas in cats are highly aggressive neoplasms, often with the development of metastasis. Pleomorphic lobular carcinoma, on the other hand, is an invasive carcinoma with aggressive behavior, rarely diagnosed in humans and dogs. This report describes a case of pleomorphic lobular carcinoma in cats. The histopathological and immunohistochemical features of the neoplasm in this species were characterized. The neoplasm was diagnosed in a 10-year-old cat, with regional lymph node involvement at the time of diagnosis, but without systemic signs based on imaging tests performed prior to m

Sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid diagnosed on fine needle aspiration cytology.

Sebaceous carcinoma of the ocular adnexa is a malignant neoplasm which has aggressive local behavior and can metastasize to regional lymph nodes and distant organs. It is a malignant neoplasm known to masquerade as other benign and less malignant lesions, resulting in delay in diagnosis and relatively high morbidity and mortality. Aspiration cytological features of this neoplasm have not been well characterized in the literature. We report a case of this tumor diagnosed on fine needle aspiration. Clinically, a diagnosis of chalazion was made and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was perfo

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis: an unusual case of breast cancer metastatic to a solitary fibrous tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that most commonly involves the visceral or parietal pleura, but that has also been described arising from virtually all organs. This neoplasm exhibits rich vascularity, a characteristic it shares with renal cell carcinoma, making these tumors especially suitable for harboring metastases. We present a case of a 64-year-old woman with history of right breast cancer treated six years previously and who presents with a left pulmonary SFT containing metastatic invasive ductal breast carcinoma as well as a synchronous contralateral primary

Primary aortic myxofibrosarcoma mimicking thrombus: findings on CT, MRI, and angiography.

Aortic sarcoma is a rare vascular malignancy. We report a case of primary aortic myxofibrosarcoma mimicking thrombus. This neoplasm demonstrated no contrast enhancement on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and was clinically suspected to represent a large thrombus, although aortic primary neoplasm was considered in the differential diagnosis on the basis of imaging. Biopsies of the aortic lesion and a concurrent brain lesion were consistent with the diagnosis of aortic myxofibrosarcoma with brain metastasis. This report highlights overlapping imaging features between primary ao

Oncocytic adenocarcinoma of salivary glands.

Oncocytic adenocarcinoma of salivary gland origin is an extremely rare neoplasm. The diagnosis is established on the basis of oncocytic cellular features in conjunction with dysplastic change. These dysplastic changes may occur in benign oncocytomas or arise de novo. The tumor occurs most commonly in the parotid glands of persons over 60 years of age. Tumors that measure less than 2 cm at the initial surgical procedure appear to have a better prognosis than larger tumors. Aggressive surgical intervention at the initial presentation of the neoplasm, compared to simple enucleation, seems to offe

Brain metastasis from a thoracic myxofibrosarcoma: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a type of sarcoma that mainly affects elderly people; it represents only 5% of all sarcomas and shows no line of differentiation. Intracranial MFS is a rare condition. At present, limited data exist regarding brain metastasis from MFS. This article reports a case of MFS and reviews the literature regarding MFS metastasis. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of brain metastasis from chest wall MFS. The patient was diagnosed with an anterior thoracic MFS and underwent surgery and radiotherapy. One year later, he noticed a tumor on his left shoulder, and more

A rare case of tumor-to-tumor metastasis from thymic carcinoma to an ovarian mature teratoma.

Metastasis from one neoplasm to another is referred to as tumor-to-tumor metastasis (TTM). TTM is rarely observed. Here, we present a patient with TTM from a thymic carcinoma to an ovarian mature teratoma. A 25-year-old woman, diagnosed with unresectable thymic carcinoma, presented with a cyst with a solid tumor component in her right ovary. Laparoscopic cystectomy of the right ovary revealed that the solid tumor was a distant metastasis of the thymic carcinoma in an ovarian mature teratoma. The possibility of malignant transformation of the ovarian mature teratoma was ruled out, enabling accu

A case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma with metastasis to the skin.

We present an 83-year-old woman with extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) of the breast who developed metastasis to the scalp. Skeletal osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the bone, predominantly occurring in the metaphysis of the long bones of adolescents and young adults. ESOS, in contrast, occurs primarily in the fifth and sixth decades of life, most commonly in the soft tissue of the thigh. Although the lung is overwhelmingly the most common site of metastasis for both skeletal osteosarcoma and ESOS, the skin is an uncommon metastatic site with only a few reported ca

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis presenting with hypercalcemia.

A case of hypercalcemia associated with documented squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis without bony metastasis is reported. Pseudohyperparathyroidism was suspected strongly because of the radioimmunoassay values of parathormone. This was confirmed by the prompt decrease of serum calcium after removal of the neoplasm. The radiologic findings were non-specific.

Metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma into the mandible with radiographic findings mimicking a radicular cyst: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common neoplasm worldwide, with more than half of the tumors associated with regional metastasis. Extrahepatic metastasis is also common, and the most frequently affected sites are the lungs, abdominal lymph nodes, diaphragm, and bone. However, HCC metastasis to the mandible is rare, with approximately 50 cases reported in the literature. METHODS: In this report, we describe a case of HCC metastasis to the mandible at the apex of #18 root in a 62-year-old man. This patient had already been diagnosed with metastasis to pancreatic caput lymph no

Cutaneous involvement as the initial presentation of metastatic breast adenocarcinoma - Case report.

Cutaneous metastasis is an uncommon manifestation of visceral malignancy. It occurs late in the course of the disease but can be a sign of an unknown neoplasm. A case of local cutaneous metastasis by contiguity with breast adenocarcinoma is reported. It presented as initial manifestation and main complaint of a 68-year-old woman, with no family history and negative screening tests for the disease. Biopsies of ulcers which do not heal, persistent hardened erythema and cutaneous nodules of unknown cause must be performed, since the evidence of cutaneous metastasis can be of extreme importance fo

Clinical Case Review of Bilateral Retinal Metastasis.

Bilateral retinal metastasis is a rare disease that represents less than 1% of ocular metastases. Additionally, the prevalence of ocular metastases overall is only 5% to 10%. It is uncommonly found due to the absence of a lymphatic system in the eye. Ocular metastasis is spread hematogenously and the retina only receives 5% of blood flow, contributing to the rarity of this condition. Retinal metastasis has been reported to mimic symptoms of retinitis which include watery eye discharge, conjunctival injection and pain with ocular movement which leads to a harder diagnosis. Treatment options for

Malignant mesenchymoma associated with an unusual vasoinvasive metastasis in a dog.

A case of a malignant mesenchymoma with an unusual, vasoinvasive, metastatic behavior in a three-year-old, intact female basset hound is presented. Malignant mesenchymomas are rare neoplasms in humans and in dogs. No previous reports of a malignant mesenchymoma with vasoinvasive metastasis in the dog were found in the literature. The constituent neoplasms are discussed in relation to reports in the human and veterinary literature, and a potential etiology for this unique presentation is hypothesized.

Metastases to the Pancreas Encountered on Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided, Fine-Needle Aspiration.

Metastatic lesions in the pancreas are very uncommon and may be difficult to differentiate from the more commonly encountered primary neoplasms derived from the exocrine and endocrine pancreas because of the significant overlap in clinical presentation, imaging, and cytologic features. Metastasis to the pancreas may occur years after treatment of the primary neoplasm and is often not considered on initial evaluation because of the rarity of such events. The possibility of a metastasis to the pancreas should be entertained in patients with any prior history of malignancy because a proper diagno

Glandular lesions of the vagina: a review of a group of rare lesions.

Primary carcinomas of the vagina are uncommon tumours, accounting for <1% of female cancers; these are also less common than metastatic carcinoma, which constitutes a significant majority of vaginal epithelial neoplasms. The most common primary tumour type is squamous cell carcinoma. Primary adenocarcinomas of the vagina are extremely rare and of various morphological types, many of which are broadly similar to those arising in the cervix. When faced with a probable primary vaginal adenocarcinoma, the pathologist faces a dilemma since the normal vagina does not contain glands, making the origi

Solitary pancreatic metastasis from breast cancer: case report and review of literature.

CONTEXT: Pancreatic metastases from primary malignant tumors at other sites are rare, constituting about 2% of the neoplasms that affect the pancreas. Pancreatic metastasis from breast cancer is extremely rare and difficult to diagnose, because its clinical and radiological presentation is similar to that of a primary pancreatic tumor. CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old female developed a lesion in the pancreatic tail 24 months after neoadjuvant therapy, surgery and adjuvant radiation therapy for right-side breast cancer (ductal carcinoma). She underwent distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy and lef
