Nerve transfer is the only possibility for nerve repair in cases of the brachial plexus traction injuries with spinal roots avulsion. From 1980. until 2000. in Institute of Neurosurgery, Clinical Center of Serbia, nerve transfer has been performed in 127(79%) of 159 patients with traction injuries of brachial plexus, i.e., 204 reinnervation procedures has been performed using different donor nerves. We achieved good or satisfactory arm abduction and full range or satisfactory elbow flexion through reinnervation of the axillary and musculocutaneous nerve using different donor nerves in 143 of 2…

Teflon injection for unilateral vocal cord paralysis frequently produces an improved yet breathy voice. Ansa hypoglossi-recurrent laryngeal … improve the voice by medially positioning the vocal cord. Gelfoam paste is injected at the time of nerve transfer to rehabilitate the voice during the 2 months required for nerve regeneration. For younger patients, or those with professional use of their voices, this technique offers superior speech results when compared with Teflon injection.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of direct distal selective nerve transfer close to the end organ with high radial nerve injury is restoration of the paretic function before irreversible atrophy of the target muscle. Simultaneous tendon transfer enables direct functional correction of wrist drop.
INDICATIONS: Selective nerve and tendon transfer of the lower arm is indicated if a) the primary nerve lesion is located proximally distant and reinnervation by direct nerve repair would take too long to reach a paretic muscle because of the long distance involved, b) direct repair of the nerve lesion is impossibl…

OBJECT: Nerve transfers are an effective means of restoring control to paralyzed somatic muscle groups and, recently, even denervated detrusor muscle. The authors performed a cadaveric pilot project to examine the feasibility of restoring control to the urethral and anal sphincters using a femoral motor nerve branch to reinnervate the pudendal nerve through a perineal approach.
METHODS: Eleven cadavers were dissected bilaterally to expose the pudendal and femoral nerve branches. Pertinent landmarks and distances that could be used to locate these nerves were assessed and measured, as were ner…

Traumatic brachial plexus injuries are a devastating injury that results in partial or total denervation of the muscles of the upper extremity. Treatment options that include neurolysis, nerve grafting, or neurotization (nerve transfer) has become an important procedure in the restoration of function in patients with irreparable preganglionic lesions. Restoration of elbow flexion is the primary goal in treating patients with severe brachial plexus injuries. Nerve transfers are used when spinal roots are avulsed, and proximal stumps are not available. In the present study, we analyze the result…

BACKGROUND: Facial paralysis, as a social-facing disorder, is associated with high levels of depression, anxiety, and social isolation. Dual nerve transfers allow for simultaneous coaptation of the hypoglossal and masseteric nerves to improve dynamic and static domains of facial function. In this study, we investigated clinician-graded long-term functional outcomes as well as their impact on disease-specific quality of life and communicative perception in patients with facial paralysis after dual nerve transfer surgery.
METHODS: Retrospective data of 8 patients with facial paralysis who under…

Multiple manifestations have been associated with the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. Among them are mononeuritis multiplex (MNM) and other neurological complications, whose connection to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still unclear. One of the most common sites of nerve injury is the radial nerve, which can be treated with both nerve or tendon transfer. In this case report, a patient who was afflicted with severe COVID-19 infection and developed mono neuritis multiplex after prolonged mechanical ventilation with radial nerve palsy was treated

BACKGROUND: Cervical spinal cord injuries result in a severe loss of function and independence. The primary goal for these patients is the restoration of hand function. Nerve transfers have recently become a powerful intervention to restore the ability to grasp and release objects. The supinator muscle, although a suboptimal tendon transfer donor, serves as an ideal distal nerve donor for reconstructive strategies of the hand. This transfer is also applicable to lower brachial plexus injuries.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the supinator to posterior interosseous nerve transfer with the goal of resto…

Nerve transfer involves the use of a portion of a healthy nerve to repair an injured nerve, and the process has been used to alleviate traumatic brachial plexus injuries in humans. Study of the neural mechanisms that occur during nerve transfer, however, requires the establishment of reliable experimental models. In this study, we developed an ulnar-musculocutaneous nerve-transfer model wherein the biceps muscle of a mouse was re-innervated using a donor ulnar nerve. Similar muscle action potentials were detected in both the end-to-end suture of the transected nerve (correctrepair) group and t…
