The impact of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on nocturnal urine production in older men with nocturia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on night-time secretion of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in older men with nocturia accompanied by nocturnal polyuria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred six men with nocturia aged ≥ 60 years underwent full-night polysomnography to determine whether they had OSAS. Blood count, standard chemistry panel, BNP, urinary ADH, urinary creatinine (u-Cre), and urinary osmolarity were measured at 6:00 AM, and a frequency volume chart was recorded on the same day that polysomnography was perf

Desmopressin is an effective treatment for mixed nocturia with nocturnal polyuria and decreased nocturnal bladder capacity.

To investigate the efficacy and safety of desmopressin in patients with mixed nocturia, Patients aged ≥ 18 yr with mixed nocturia (≥ 2 voids/night and a nocturnal polyuria index [NPi] >33% and a nocturnal bladder capacity index [NBCi] >1) were recruited. The optimum dose of oral desmopressin was determined during a 3-week dose-titration period and the determined dose was maintained for 4 weeks. The efficacy was assessed by the frequency-volume charts and the sleep questionnaire. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with a 50% or greater reduction in the number of nocturnal voids

Nocturia in adults: draft New Zealand guidelines for its assessment and management in primary care.

Nocturia is a common bothersome condition. An ad hoc group of interested clinicians from a variety of backgrounds has developed draft guidelines for the assessment and management of this condition in primary care in New Zealand. The guidelines propose four steps in the assessment and management: clinical evaluation; simple investigations; assignment of a provisional diagnosis; and management based on the provisional diagnosis. For nocturnal polyuria-associated nocturia, the draft guidelines recommend that: lifestyle measures should be used as part of the management; if a patient complaining of

Beneficial effect of intranasal desmopressin for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and nocturia: preliminary results.

The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of intranasal desmopressin in the treatment of nocturnal polyuria in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Twelve men with BPH were treated with intranasal desmopressin at bedtime for nocturnal polyuria. All patients underwent video-urodynamic evaluation. The number of nocturia episodes was the dependent variable. Exclusion criteria included nephrolithiasis, active urinary tact infection, and history of myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and angina. Ten of 12 patients improved with the intranasal desmopressin therapy. Noc

Risk of bladder cancer among male participants reporting nocturia in the Cancer Prevention Study-II.

BACKGROUND: It is believed that contact of the urothelial lining to carcinogens induces mutations that lead to cancer. Nocturia, waking up at night to urinate, may void carcinogens and reduce risk of bladder cancer. METHODS: The Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort is a prospective study of cancer incidence that enrolled participants in 1992 with biennial follow-up beginning in 1997. Cases were ascertained through state cancer registry, medical record verification, or death certificate. Cox models were used to calculate hazard ratios(HR) and 95% confidence intervals(95%CI) for the asso

Nocturia independently predicts left ventricular hypertrophy and left atrial enlargement among patients with cardiac symptoms.

Nocturia can be caused by urological disorders and systemic diseases, including heart diseases. We aimed to investigate the relationship between nocturia and structural abnormalities on echocardiography. Adult patients who underwent echocardiography for cardiac symptoms or heart murmur or had a history of structural heart disease were included. The voiding times during sleep hours were collected prospectively. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate the predictive value of bothersome nocturia (nocturia ≥ 2) on echocardiographic abnormalities. Of 299 patients, 182 (60.9%

Pre- and post-void residual volume in Parkinson's disease patients with urinary urgency, incontinence or nocturia.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to identify Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with overflow incontinence and to observe trends between pre- and post-void residual volume (PVR) and urinary urgency, incontinence or nocturia in our sample. MATERIAL AND METHODS: As part of our diagnostic evaluation, we measured PVR using a portable bladder scanner in patients with PD at our inpatient facility. The initial measurement was conducted upon admission, and, if increased (PVR > 50 mL), a control measurement was carried out on the same or following day. If the PVR was ≥ 150 mL at follow-up, further control mea
