A differentiable simulation of the eye for patient-specific strabismus surgery planning.

PURPOSE: Up to 4% of adults will develop strabismus in their lifetime. The most common surgical intervention involves adjusting the length of one or more extraocular muscles to correct the angular deviation. This correction depends on surgical expertise and statistical reference tables, which often fail to yield optimal results for patients with atypical eye morphology. Our work proposes a physics-based modeling approach to personalized surgical planning, accounting for patient-specific eye anatomy. METHODS: We built a physics-based simulator of the eye and its muscles, incorporating patient-

Investigating orbital foreign device-associated malignancies: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: While prosthesis-associated malignancies have been acknowledged, awareness among surgeons and patients in the ophthalmologic field remains limited, despite the frequent occurrence of prosthesis-related surgeries. We aim to address this gap through a scoping review of malignancies following ophthalmologic surgeries involving various foreign device/prosthesis/implants. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a review using PubMed and Embase for studies on cancer and ophthalmic prostheses/implants. The final selection of articles for the ophthalmology aspect underwent rigo

[Progress of clinical application in extraocular muscle transposition].

Extraocular muscle transposition, including adjacent extraocular muscle transposition and transmuscular transposition, is often used to correct different types of strabismus, especially special forms of strabismus, instead of conventional surgery, which could not correct large-angle strabismus or improve the eye movement function. With the popularity of individualized surgical schemes, various types of extraocular muscle transposition procedures are available. In this article, the research progress of extraocular muscle transposition in the treatment of strabismus is reviewed, and the indicati

[Translated article] Safety in Dermatologic Procedures: Ophthalmologic Complications.

Ophthalmological complications are uncommon in dermatologic surgery. Nonetheless, all surgeons should know the basics of recognizing, preventing, and treating the 4 complications addressed in this article from the series 'Safety in Dermatologic Procedures'. The first complication that surgeons should be familiar with is eye damage due to chemical irritants. This is a common complication in operating rooms given the presence of irritant substances and the performance of procedures in the eyebrow and eyelid region. The second complication is laser-induced eye damage. In this case, eye protection

Treatment of Nanophthalmos-Related Uveal Effusion with Two- vs. Four-Quadrant Partial-Thickness Sclerectomy and Sclerotomy Surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To report visual and anatomical outcomes following two- or four-quadrant partial-thickness sclerectomy and sclerotomy surgery to treat nanophthalmos (NO)-related uveal effusion (UE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients with NO-related UE were treated with four-quadrant or two-quadrant (for those with associated glaucoma) partial-thickness sclerectomy and sclerotomy surgery. Axial length, extent of UE, preoperative, postoperative, and final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), time to retinal reattachment, and rates of retinal reattachment and recurrence were noted. A 2020 Update on 20/20 X 2: Diplopia after Glaucoma Surgery.

New-onset diplopia is an important complication that may occur following several types of ocular surgery, including glaucoma surgery. Surgeons should be aware of the possibility of ocular motility disturbances after glaucoma surgery, whereas strabismus experts must understand the mechanisms and the most appropriate management of these forms of strabismus. The incidence, mechanisms, characteristics and treatment of diplopia and strabismus after glaucoma surgery will be reviewed.

External Choroidal Drainage Using Direct Visualization.

Laura L. Snyder Shriji N. Patel A woman in her 60s with a functional glaucoma tube shunt presented after vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane peeling with symptomatic choroidal effusions not responsive to medical therapy. She underwent a minimally invasive, transconjunctival choroidal drainage procedure, which was directly visualized under a widefield viewing system to prevent intraocular hemorrhage or retinal penetration of the needle. This allowed for preservation of her conjunctiva, restoration of normal intraocular pressure by temporary blockage of her tube shunt with a viscoelastic, and res

[Presbyopia and refractive surgery].

Presbyopia is the progressive loss of accommodation. Accommodation is a quick, precise and involuntary action which enables the eye to change the power of the young crystalline lens to see clearly at all distances. Presbyopia is and age-linked physiologic phenomenon: it results from aging of the lens, which loses its elasticity, gradually becomes rigid and loses the ability to accommodate. Presbyopia has attained a prevalence of 80% in Europe and is increasing regularly due to the aging of the population. Various surgical techniques can be proposed. Indications depend on age, ophthalmological

Trachoma elimination, approaching 2020.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review current practices for trachoma treatment with a focus on recent studies, particularly those discussing trachoma trichiasis surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Azithromycin eye drops twice daily for 3 days may be as efficient as oral azithromycin in treating active trachoma. Facial cleanliness and environmental improvement programming should employ a variety of behavior change techniques to give sustained improvements. Posterior lamellar tarsal rotation carries a lower risk for trichiasis recurrence and is more effective in severe trachoma trichiasis than bilamellar tarsal r

Aesthetic Refinements in Patients with Prominent Eyes.

The treatment of prominent eyes is still a challenging task. As well as the surgery, proper preoperative diagnosis differentiating between patients with and without Graves ophthalmopathy plays an important role. In functionally asymptomatic patients with Graves disease suffering from the aesthetic impairment of prominent eyes, the transpalpebral decompression by intraorbital fat removal technique has been proved to be reliable, effective, safe, and easily performed by a trained and experienced oculoplastic surgeon. This technique provides long-lasting results, leading to improvement not only i

Modified Kuhnt-Szymanowski surgical procedure for secondary cicatricial ectropion in a horse.

A 1-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding was presented to the University of Florida's Large Animal Hospital (UF-LAH) for correction of ectropion of the right lower eyelid. The ectropion was the result of a lower eyelid laceration. A primary repair was performed by the referring veterinarian; however, the horse prematurely removed the sutures and the wound healed with inversion of the eyelid margin. Surgical correction of the entropion, with removal of tissue from the lower eyelid, resulted in cicatricial ectropion. During the initial evaluation at UF-LAH, a corneal ulcer was noted in the right eye
