Evaluation and development of potentially better practices to prevent chronic lung disease and reduce lung injury in neonates.

OBJECTIVE: Despite increased knowledge and improving technology, chronic lung disease (CLD) rates in extremely low birth weight infants have remained constant for 20 years. One reason for this is an ineffective translation of research-proven improvements into practice. The Neonatal Intensive Care Quality Improvement Collaborative Year 2000 (NIC/Q 2000) was created to provide participating nurseries the tools necessary to effect change. The objective of this study was to develop and implement a process that uses quality improvement techniques to collaboratively improve CLD rates. METHODS: Nine

Healthcare at the Crossroads: The Need to Shape an Organizational Culture of Humanistic Teaching and Practice.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the organization of medical practice have impeded humanistic practice and resulted in widespread physician burnout and dissatisfaction. OBJECTIVE: To identify organizational factors that promote or inhibit humanistic practice of medicine by faculty physicians. DESIGN: From January 1, 2015, through December 31, 2016, faculty from eight US medical schools were asked to write reflectively on two open-ended questions regarding institutional-level motivators and impediments to humanistic practice and teaching within their organizations. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty eight of the 92

Based on 12 sport event cases and 28 semi-structured interviews, the study identifies restructuring paths through qualitative coding and further examines structural effects using social network analysis, event-study estimatio

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify relationships between work organizational variables (job rotation, overtime work, having a second job, and work pacing) (These work organizational variables and their relationships with biomechanical and psychosocial exposures were studied previously and published in a separate paper.) and health outcome measures [carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), lateral and medial epicondylitis (LEPI/MEPI)]. METHODS: Using a pooled baseline cohort of 1834 subjects, the relationships were studied using logistic regression models. RESULTS: Varied degrees of associ

Validity and Reliability of the Psychodynamic Organizational Diagnostic Instrument SyMOA: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive understanding of organizations is fundamental for implementing successful change measures. However, to date, there is no empirically testable, operationalized systems-psychodynamic organizational diagnostic method that can capture the deeper, more complex dynamics that are crucial for sustainable transformation. To address this gap, we developed the Systematic Multidimensional Organizational Assessment (SyMOA), a qualitative instrument based on an evidence-based clinical diagnostic framework, the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostics III. SyMOA integrates clinic

Organizational commitment of health professionals and associated factors in primary healthcare facilities of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A multi-center cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Organizational commitment has a positive impact on an organization's ability to provide professional services. However, to the best knowledge of researchers, there are no studies examining organizational commitment in the healthcare setting of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the level of organizational commitment

The Impact of Setting Characteristics on Community Health Worker Roles and COVID-19 Activities: An Examination of the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities Program.

Objectives. To examine the roles and activities performed by community health workers (CHWs) involved in the national Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program and examine differences based on setting characteristics. Methods. We used data from a CHW self-report survey (n = 689) conducted February through March 2024 in the United States. We ran a series of ordered logistic regression models to examine the association between setting characteristics (i.e., type of organizational setting, organizational experience with CHWs, and populations of focus) and

Introduction of Medicare coverage in opioid treatment programs: Findings from the first three years.

BACKGROUND: Prior to January of 2020, there was no Medicare reimbursement for services delivered in opioid treatment programs (OTPs). OTPs are the only authorized providers of opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment with methadone, a critical tool to address the opioid overdose crisis. While prior research has examined the availability of MOUD other than methadone for Medicare beneficiaries, research has not identified organizational and local Medicare beneficiary characteristics associated with Medicare insurance acceptance among OTPs. OBJECTIVES: This study has two objectives: 1) to determine t

Measuring Whether Gratitude and Loneliness Mediate the Link Between Non-organizational Religiosity and Suicidal Ideation: Evidence From Black Adults During COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: Suicides among Black adults in the United States increased nationally during the COVID-19 pandemic, although limited empirical evidence documents the pathways that explain how suicide risk may develop in this population. We examined experiences of non-organizational religious involvement, gratitude, and loneliness and their relation to suicidal ideation among Black adults in the United States. METHODS: We analyzed data from a probability-based sample of 995 Black adults in the United States who completed online surveys from April through June 2022. We recruited participants from t

BACKGROUND: The United Nations Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals to succeed the Millennium Development Goals in September 2015. From a European perspective, the development of health in the countries of North Africa are of special interest as a critical factor of overall social development in Europe's Mediterranean partners. In this paper, we address the mortality related SDG-3 targets, the likelihood to achieve them until 2030 and analyze how they are defined. METHODS: We projected mortality trends from 2000-2015 to 2030, based on mortality estimates by inter-agency groups a

Behavioral characteristics of Internet gamblers who trigger corporate responsible gambling interventions.

As the worldwide popularity of Internet gambling increases, concerns about the potential for gambling-related harm also increase. This paper reports the results of a study examining actual Internet gambling behavior during 10 years of play. We examined the electronic gambling records of subscribers (N=2,066) who triggered a responsible gaming alert system at a large international online gaming company. We compared these cases with control subscribers (N=2,066) who had the same amount of exposure to the Internet gambling service provider. We used discriminant function analysis to explore what a

[Neonatal mortality--the key to reduced neonatal mortality?].

BACKGROUND: A newborn dies every 10th second; a pregnant woman dies during labour every minute. Four of ten under-5-deaths occur the first four weeks of life. To achieve UN's fourth millennium goal on reduction of child mortality, neonatal mortality has to be markedly reduced. The article covers causes of and steps needed to reduce neonatal mortality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The article is based on literature identified through non-systematic searches in Medline, publications by WHO, UNICEF and Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health and the author's experience from neonatal medicine i

Health protection: Occupational safety and health.

Many of the Nation's approximately 100 million workers are exposed to some kind of occupational health hazard: carcinogenic agents, pulmonary or other physical disease incitant, physical agents or job-related pressures of noise, crowding, or stress. Exposure to toxic chemicals or physical hazards can produce chronic lung disease, cancer, degenerative disease in a number of vital organ systems, birth defects, and genetic changes. These exposures are estimated to result in 100,000 Americans dying each year from occupationally related illnesses, with an additional 400,000 cases of occupationally
