The effect of fluoroquinolones and antioxidans on biofilm formation by Proteus mirabilis strains.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolones are a group of antibiotics used in urinary tract infections. Unfortunately, resistance to this group of drugs is currently growing. The combined action of fluoroquinolones and other antibacterial and anti-biofilm substances may extend the use of this therapeutic option by clinicians. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected fluoroquinolones and therapeutic concentrations of ascorbic acid and rutoside on biofilm formation by Proteus mirabilis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 15 strains of P. mirabilis isolated from urinary tract infect

The Role of Interventional Pain Management in Proteus Syndrome: A Case Report.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare overgrowth disease process with only a few hundred cases being reported in the literature. Abnormal formation of the vertebral bodies causing scoliosis and spinal stenosis are common features that lead to debilitating pain in these patients. We present a case of a 35-year-old male landscaper with a history of PS causing severe scoliosis and vertebral overgrowth who underwent recurrent sets of multilevel zygapophyseal joint injections for management of his axial back pain. This case illustrates the utility of interventional spinal procedures in patients with prog

Retrorectal cyst: proteus in the backyard-case series and literature review.

Retrorectal cysts are cystic lesions located in the retrorectal space and are a distinct subset of retrorectal tumours, which are often misdiagnosed due to their rarity and mimicry of symptoms caused by common diseases. We have described the presentation and management of four patients who were diagnosed with retrorectal cysts from a 10-year retrospective chart review at our institute, a tertiary care centre. In middle-aged women, the following should raise suspicion of retrorectal cyst: gastrointestinal or urinary obstructive features, mass or fullness palpable on the posterior wall on digita

Proteus syndrome: Report of a case with AKT1 mutation in a dental cyst.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a sporadic and rare congenital disorder characterized by a patchy or mosaic postnatal overgrowth, sometimes involving the face. The onset of overgrowth typically occurs in infancy and can commonly involve skin, connective tissue, central nervous system, eyes and viscera. The progressive overgrowth causes severe complications, such as skeletal deformities, cystic lung disease, invasive lipomas, connective tissue hyperplasia, benign and malignant tumours and deep venous thrombosis with pulmonary embolism, which can cause premature death. This disorder is caused by somati

Penile reconstruction for a case of genital lymphoedema secondary to proteus syndrome.

To our knowledge penile lymphoedema secondary to Proteus syndrome has not previously been reported. Hence we report a case of a 16-year-old male who was referred with features of right hemi-hypertrophy and severe lymphoedema affecting his scrotum and penis. He had previously undergone scrotal reduction surgery at the age of 13, but had since developed worsening penile oedema. His main concern was that of cosmetic appearance prior to sexual debut, and he also complained of erectile dysfunction. An MRI confirmed gross oedema of the penile skin, but normal underlying cavernosal structure, and no

Occurrence of Proteus mirabilis associated with two species of venezuelan oysters.

The fecal contamination of raw seafood by indicators and opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms represents a public health concern. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of enteric bacteria colonizing oysters collected from a Venezuelan touristic area. Oyster samples were collected at the northwestern coast of Venezuela and local salinity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen of seawater were recorded. Total and fecal coliforms were measured for the assessment of the microbiological quality of water and oysters, using the Multiple Tube Fermentation technique. Analyses w

Proteus syndrome: a rare cause of hemihypertrophy and macrodactyly on bone scanning.

Proteus syndrome is a rare, sporadic genetic disorder characterized by overgrowth of multiple different tissues in a mosaic pattern. It is associated with connective tissue nevi, epidermal nevi, disproportionate overgrowth of multiple tissues, vascular malformations, characteristic tumors, and specific facial anomalies. Joseph Merrick, popularly known as the Elephant Man, is now believed to have suffered from Proteus syndrome. A case of Proteus syndrome and associated findings on bone scintigraphy are presented.

Molecular epidemiology of Proteus mirabilis infections of the catheterized urinary tract.

Proteus mirabilis compromises the care of many patients undergoing long-term indwelling bladder catheterization. It forms crystalline bacterial biofilms in catheters which block the flow of urine, causing either incontinence due to leakage or painful distention of the bladder due to urinary retention. If it is not dealt with, catheter blockage can lead to pyelonephritis and septicemia. We have examined the epidemiology of catheter-associated P. mirabilis infections by use of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of NotI restriction enzyme digests of bacterial DNA. This technique was shown to

A minimal form of Proteus syndrome presenting with macrodactyly and hand hyperplasia.

Proteus syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by progressive course and great variability of clinical presentation with partial gigantism of extremities, hemihyperplasia with macrocephaly, epidermal nevus, mesodermal hamartomas and the presence of peculiar cerebriform masses on the palms/soles. Many atypical cases have been reported and this is probably due to the mosaicism of the genetic disorder displaying different clinical features. We describe a patient with an extremely mild form of Proteus syndrome presenting macrodactyly and hyperplasia of one hand which was misdiagnosed

Non-operative management of a splenic laceration in a patient with the Proteus syndrome.

An adult patient with the Proteus syndrome sustained a grade III splenic laceration after falling off a horse. Clinical features of this rare disorder include subcutaneous and visceral hamartomatous tumours. The patient also suffered from chronic intravascular coagulation associated with extensive haemangiomatosis (Kasabach-Merritt syndrome). Considering the visceral anomalies and abnormal coagulation, a non-operative approach was preferred despite considerable transfusion requirement, and the patient successfully underwent embolisation of the splenic artery. This is the first reported case of

[Proteus syndrome. Expansion of the phenotype. Apropos of 3 pediatric cases].

In 1979 Cohen et Hayden and in 1983 Wiedemann et al. delineated a syndrome consisting of partial gigantism of the hands and/or feet, nevi, hemihypertrophy, subcutaneous tumors, macrocephaly or other skull anomalies and possible accelerated growth and visceral affections. Hitherto the literature pertaining to this syndrome consists of somewhat more than 100 cases of which some, that have been described previously or subsequently under other headings, were rediagnosed as being Proteus syndromes. Of these, more than half show vascular anomalies closely resembling those observed in the Klippel-Tre

The association of particular types of Proteus with chronic suppurative otitis media.

During a period of 12 months, 57 strains of Proteus were isolated from the ears of 38 unrelated patients with chronic suppurative otitis media. Each strain was identified, typed for bacteriocin production and sensitivity, and tested for Dienes compatibility. The majority of the strains (79%) were P. mirabilis; all but one of the remainder were P.vulgaris. Although 19 different bacteriocin production/sensitivity types were found, two rare types, P. mirabilis P7/S5,12 and P. vulgaris P0/S9, were associated with 47% of these infections. This was confirmed by Dienes typing. Patients with bilateral

Inhibition of induced pinocytosis in Amoeba proteus by membrane stabilizing drugs.

The effect of membrane stabilizing drugs on cation induced pinocytosis was studied in Amoeba proteus. Initially the presence of local anesthetic drugs during a pinocytosis cycle had a stimulating effect on channel formation, however, the capacity to develop pinocytotic channels was reversibly inhibited after a period of treatment with these drugs. Imipramine, vinblastine and the phenothiazines had effects similar to local anaesthetics. The local anesthetics inhibited pinocytosis in the following order: dibucaine greater than tetracaine greater than bupivacaine greater than lidocaine greater th

A lytic phage targeting virulent Proteus mirabilis for effective biofilm eradication.

Proteus mirabilis is an opportunistic pathogen frequently associated with catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), where robust crystalline biofilms contribute to chronicity, antimicrobial tolerance, and recurrence. The rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. mirabilis has prompted interest in bacteriophage therapy as an alternative to conventional antibiotics. In this study, we isolated a lytic bacteriophage, vB_PmiM_ZX7, from sewage using a highly virulent clinical strain, P. mirabilis YV2, as the host. vB_PmiM_ZX7 displayed a broad host range among MDR P. mirabilis i

Selective sugar transport supports Proteus mirabilis fitness in the urinary tract.

Proteus mirabilis is a leading cause of complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). Prior work showed P. mirabilis metabolizes sugars during experimental UTI, yet the role of sugar import systems in pathogenesis remains poorly defined. To investigate this, we generated a panel of 47 targeted mutants in predicted sugar transporter genes and assessed their growth in vitro and fitness in vivo. Growth screening in nutrient-rich and minimal media revealed carbon source-dependent defects in several phosphotransferase system (PTS) mutants, including ptsH and ptsI. Pooled insertion sequencing (In-seq

Proteus effect avatar profiles: Associations with disordered gaming and activity levels.

Gaming avatars can influence users' attitudes and behaviors and manifest as the proteus effect. The present study examined proteus effect profiles among 571 gamers and their associations with disordered gaming and physical activity. Latent class analysis identified three profiles: non-influenced gamers, emotion-perception influenced gamers (highest proteus effect), and emotion-behavior influenced gamers (moderate proteus effect). The high proteus effect group exhibited significantly higher gaming disorder symptoms at baseline and 6 months compared to other profiles. Proteus effect profiles did
