Past, present, and future of iodine deficiency disorders in India: Need to look outside the blinkers.

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) have been recognized as one of the major nutritional disorders throughout the world affecting 200 million people who are at risk and another 71 million suffering from goiter and other IDDs. These groups of disorders can affect every stage of life, but most vulnerable age group is between 6 and 12 years and these disorders together constitute the single largest preventable cause of brain damage leading to learning disabilities and psychomotor impairment. The existence of endemic goiter in an extensive belt along the southern slopes of the Himalayas, Alps, and

[Assessment of autism spectrum disorder in young people].

Autism is currently considered as a neurodevelopmental disorder called "autism spectrum disorder" (ASD). Its diagnosis is based on assessments focusing on two main areas: the presence of persistent impairments in communication and social interactions in varied contexts, as well as the presence of a stereotypical or repetitive nature of the subject's movements, use of objects or language. The complementary functional diagnosis enables a personalised project to be constructed taking into account the resources and difficulties of the individual with ASD. It focuses on cognitive, communication, ps

Rare sex chromosome aneuploidies: 49,XXXXY and 48,XXXY syndromes.

49,XXXXY and 48,XXXY syndromes are rare gonosomal aneuploidies in which the affected individuals present with characteristic facial and skeletal malformations, intrauterine growth retardation, and psychomotor retardation. Psychological, endocrinologic and orthopedic disorders constitute the major problems in the clinical follow-up. Sex chromosome abnormalities should especially be kept in mind in the evaluation of patients with micropenis, mental retardation and accompanying behavioral disturbances. Management mandates a multidisciplinary approach with pediatric endocrinology, pediatric surger

Aicardi syndrome with favorable outcome: case report and review.

Aicardi syndrome is a congenital disorder characterized by severe psychomotor retardation, corpus callosum agenesis, chorioretinal lacunae, and early-onset infantile spasms. The prognosis is generally poor for children with the classical form. We report a peculiar case of Aicardi syndrome characterized by corpus callosum hypoplasia, brain malformations with subependymal heterotopias, extensive chorioretinal lacunae, seizures, and normal cognitive functions. Therefore, the clinical picture of the syndrome is broader than originally described. Cognitive disorders should not be considered inevita

Neurodevelopmental outcome in children between one and five years after persistent pulmonary hypertension of term and near-term newborns.

BACKGROUND: Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is a serious condition that affects 1-2 per 1,000 newborns. Scientific data report the existence of neurological developmental abnormalities between 10 and 30%, but the description of these disorders linked with this situation of cerebral hypoxia and haemodynamic failure remains poorly documented. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this study was to describe the prevalence of neuro-psychomotor developmental disorders in children aged between one and five years old who have been hospitalised at birth in a neonatal intensive care unit

An update on serine deficiency disorders.

Serine deficiency disorders are caused by a defect in one of the three synthesising enzymes of the L-serine biosynthesis pathway. Serine deficiency disorders give rise to a neurological phenotype with psychomotor retardation, microcephaly and seizures in newborns and children or progressive polyneuropathy in adult patients. There are three defects that cause serine deficiency of which 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (3-PGDH) deficiency, the defect affecting the first step in the pathway, has been reported most frequently. The other two disorders in L-serine biosynthesis phosphoserine aminotra

Continuing education in neurometabolic disorders--serine deficiency disorders.

Serine deficiency disorders comprise a new group of inborn errors of serine metabolism. Patients affected with these disorders present with major neurological symptoms including congenital microcephaly, seizures, psychomotor retardation or polyneuropathy. The diagnosis of serine deficiency is based on the detection of low concentrations of the amino acids serine and glycine in fasted plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Amino acid analysis of cerebrospinal fluid is preferable over plasma analysis, because the deficiencies are more pronounced in CSF. Because of the interference of amino acids

Generation of two human induced pluripotent stem cell lines from Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome (AHDS) patients with SLC16A2:G401R or SLC16A2: H192R mutation.

Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome (AHDS) is an X-linked disorder characterized by profound psychomotor impairment. It is caused by mutations in the SLC16A2 gene, which encodes monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8), a crucial thyroid hormone transporter. Here we report generation of two male patient-derived iPSC lines harboring either SLC16A2:G401R or SLC16A2:H192R.

A syndrome of depression and mutism in the Oglala Sioux.

The wacinko syndrome in the Oglala Sioux varies from a nonclinical reaction to pathological degrees of anger, pouting, withdrawal, depression, psychomotor retardation, mutism, immobility, and even to suicide. Although indigenous proctitioners recognize the syndrome as a distinctive disorder, it has not been described by non-Indian practitioners. The author presents a case report and suggests that most cases are diagnosable as reactive depressive illness.

[Impact of hemophilia on the psychomotor development of children].

A psychomotor assessment was performed in a population of 26 severe hemophilic children aged 4 to 12 y. This assessment studied the coordination and the rhythm, the gestual symbolization and the drawing of the self-portrait. Results were compared to those of an age-matched group of 26 non-hemophilic healthy boys. This study revealed a high frequency of moderate psychomotor abnormalities in hemophiliacs. The presence of these abnormalities was not correlated with the degree of arthropathy, the frequency of bleeding or the treatment regimen, on demand or prophylaxis. The results of the psychomot

Identifying symptom communities and core symptoms in the anxiety-depression network among computer science students.

Although the mental health of college students has become a focus in the health field and society, there is still little discussion about the mental health of students in computer science and related majors. This study was guided by the network theory of mental disorders, presents a symptom network analysis of anxiety and depression among computer science students. A total of 3934 computer science students were included in this study. The seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) were used to measure anxiety and depression symp

Recurrent Encephalopathy as a Form of Presentation of Transport Protein Particle Complex 11-Related Disease: A Family Matter.

BACKGROUND: Transport protein particle complex 11 (TRAPPC11)-related disease, with autosomal recessive inheritance, exhibits a multisystemic involvement that goes widely beyond muscle weakness. Poor growth, psychomotor development delay, intellectual disability, microcephaly, ophthalmic involvement, and movement disorders are some of the typical features. Elevated serum creatine kinase levels are present in all previously reported TRAPPC11 c.1278+5G > A variant cases. METHODS: Clinical characterization of three siblings from a Roma family with TRAPPC11-related disease, all harboring a homozyg

Frontal lobe functions and dysfunctions.

Frontal lobe syndromes with personality change are well known for about 150 years but mysteries of their underlying anatomophysiological mechanisms have started to unfold in recent years. The frontal lobe accommodates an extension of the primary motor (precentral) cortex, the premotor region and the interhemispherically located supplementary motor region, both of them forming area 6 and its subdivisions. The anterior and inferior frontal structures (and also the eye field, area 8) belong to the prefrontal region. The prefrontal cortex is also involved in motor action: in its initiation, planni

Tourette syndrome and neuropsychological performance.

This study examined performance on a battery of neuropsychological tests in a sample of 28 patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS). Test scores were converted to age-corrected T-scores to control for the effect of age on test performance. The frequency of abnormal test performances was variable, but more frequent on motor and sensory tasks. Symptom severity as measured by the Tourette Syndrome Global Scale was inversely related to neuropsychological performance. In general, neuropsychological performance was mildly below average. The pattern of performance was similar to previous studies of TS

Speech timing measures of severity, psychomotor retardation, and agitation in endogenously depressed patients.

Mean duration and frequency of pauses within speech, pauses between speakers, and vocal activity were measured in 28 endogenous depressive during a psychiatric interview. A factor analysis on these variables revealed two factors accounting for 50% and 24% of the variance, respectively. Factor 1 could be interpreted as a pause factor. The mean durations of both types of pauses had high negative loadings, whereas the frequency of vocal activity, simultaneous speech, and pauses, and the mean duration of vocal activity had high positive loadings on this factor. The degree of retardation (a measure

Clinical, biochemical, and genetic features associated with VARS2-related mitochondrial disease.

In recent years, an increasing number of mitochondrial disorders have been associated with mutations in mitochondrial aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (mt-aaRSs), which are key enzymes of mitochondrial protein synthesis. Bi-allelic functional variants in VARS2, encoding the mitochondrial valyl tRNA-synthetase, were first reported in a patient with psychomotor delay and epilepsia partialis continua associated with an oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) Complex I defect, before being described in a patient with a neonatal form of encephalocardiomyopathy. Here we provide a detailed genetic, clinical, an

Progression of microstructural putamen alterations in a case of symptomatic recurrent seizures using diffusion tensor imaging.

Microstructural alterations of the putamen were recently reported in patients with partial and generalized epilepsy disorders. However, it is unknown whether these alterations pre-exist or are secondary to recurrent seizures. Here we investigated the progression of putamen fractional anisotropy (FA) alterations in a case of recurrent psychomotor seizures using longitudinal diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) shortly before (DTI-1) and after a psychomotor seizure (DTI-2). We obtained FA values of a hypothesis-guided putamen region-of-interest (ROI) and seven exploratory ROIs. FA values from both DTI

Effects of repeated ingestion of grapefruit juice on the single and multiple oral-dose pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of alprazolam.

The effects of repeated ingestion of grapefruit juice, an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of both single and multiple oral doses of alprazolam, a substrate of CYP3A4, were examined. In study 1, eight healthy volunteers ingesting 600 ml/day water or grapefruit juice for 10 days took a single oral 0.8-mg dose of alprazolam on the eighth day. Plasma drug concentrations were monitored up to 48 h after alprazolam dosing together with evaluation of psychomotor function. Grapefruit juice altered neither the plasma concentrations of alprazolam at
